Thanks for your video! I also received ECT due to my depression. I've suffered from severe, chronic depression since I was a teenager. I first had ECT back in 2007 when I was 21 years old. As you touched upon, due to the memory loss, I don't really remember how many I had it but I know I did the standard 10 or so treatments while inpatient and then I had maintenance ECT for a few months afterward. I don't remember my 21st birthday, which occurred a few months before I began the ECT, nor do I remember a trip to California, but honestly these are just trade-offs because the ECT helped me more than I could ever say.
Fast forward to March of this year, 2016, and I fell into such a depression that I went back to the hospital and we did ECT again. It's truly like a miracle for me. I felt better after a few treatments. I'm still getting monthly treatments for maintenance and I'm going to continue it for awhile. The ECT is really the only thing that keeps my depression away. Interestingly, this time with ECT, I've had virtually no memory loss. I find it interesting since I'm having the same types of treatments, bilateral brief-pulse ECT, but no memory loss. I do have to agree that the headaches afterward are FREAKING awful! I have a history of migraines, so it might be worse for me, but it's worth it. I'd recommend anyone with treatment-resistant, severe depression to do research and weigh the pros and cons of ECT. It wasn't all roses, but I am thankful every day that I had ECT and just knowing that if that darkness comes back again, there's ECT, that really is comforting for me.

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience during your recent ECT treatment, especially since it helped somewhat before for you. :( I hope you're able to find the right med combo or something else. I know how frustrating it is to keep trying different things. Take care

Hi Carly, I'm have bipolar and currently receiving ECT. It was a "last resort" for me as well, in fact I put it off for about 2 years after my psychiatrist first recommended it to me. It is helping, with the downside of some memory loss, and some ups and downs.

Hi Carly, my sister has bipolar and is currently hospitalized and the doctor is saying we should consider ECT and thus I'm researching and chanced upon your video which is very helpful. I also noticed your update saying it's awful and should be illegal. Could you please share why you said that? Just trying to get a balanced sense of what it does.

Thank you so much for posting! You didn't really touch on the anesthetic in detail. I'm assuming you were completely sedated? This is the part that freaks me out the most haha. Going under anesthetic sounds so crazy. How exactly did they do it/what did it feel like? I heard it feels instant, like you blink and your awake again. I also hear it burns when it goes in. Did you have the same experience? Could you have fought it and stayed awake if you would have tried? Basically whatever you remember about it. And thanks so much for your videos, they are very helpful!

thanks! and yeah i was completely sedated and i actually tried to fight it but i always fell under lol. it does feel super fast though like i was just passed out for two seconds then i woke up. Im not sure what you mean by burning? Afterwards though i did have bad headaches.

I'm 18 and currently getting ect treatment. I have suffered with supposedly seasonal depression. Idk cause this depression lasts August to mid January. Because of these mood issues I have been hospitalized 3 times. Ect is kind of like a last resort treatment for me too. Could you please give an update video or message to why you dont reccomend ect and why it should be banned. I am truly afraid of ect with the different stories I've heard from other people from there experiences.

ive met many people whove gotten ECT & it hasnt helped them. i lost many memories from my time getting it. (I was treated 11 times from jan-feb of 2014 i think) Ive lost most of my memory from jan-march of that time. I think its just bullshit that isnt worth the cost. my brain is still affected from it, though i do live a normal life now. it didnt help me at all.

@@mylifeinblacknwhite thank you for responding! Means alot! I have had 12 treatments of ect so far. On the days of monday, wednesday, and friday are the only days where this hospital treat patients with ect. Each time I've gone I, my family, and doctors have notice slight improvements in my health which have been remarkable. I have only noticed a few short term memorie issues which do suck but are worth it if ect brings me back to my full self again.

my dad stumbled upon this video and sent it to me. I'm trying to get this approved by a psychiatrist since I decided to get off all of my medications about 2 months ago. I was hospitalized 4 times for suicide attempts and countless times for side effects from medications and I'm starting to feel like I don't care to be around anymore and I have a history of blacking out when I'm off meds so I'm kind of at a loss after reading your comments about being against this procedure.
if you could go back, would you just not do it? and if not, what would you do instead?
