    I work for Westerly Marina, a Mercury dealership on the Hudson River in Ossining, NY. The family has had the marina and store since 1959 and we still have a bunch of abandoned outboards that were left for repairs or storage over the years. Just what's sitting around (without digging), I know I have three "dock-busters", a 65, a 110, and a handful of the later 70s and early 80s Marathon engines that just used the horsepower rating on the cowl. (There are more, I just can't remember the models of them off hand.) Plus, we actually still see at least one or two of these vintage motors come in every year when someone finds one at a tag sale or in a relative's garage, so I still fix and re-activate these old smokers to this day. We have a whole separate parts room full of NOS/NLA parts for Mercury and MerCruiser consisting of parts that have been here on location since they were current stock. I have entire NOS outdrive cases from the early 70s, in the box. Un-obtanium early electronic ignition parts. Pistons and needle bearings. It's like the weirdest museum you can imagine...
    This was really cool to come across. I've only been there for about the last 18 years, but I'm the one guy there who has an eye for all the old stuff. If anyone is looking for very specific old stuff and can find Sing Sing Prison, you can find us. I'd love to see it used to fix a LARGER old thing.

    These so called lower HP engines moved boats along just fine back then before the ridiculous horsepower wars started. The sweet spot for small boat HP is around 85 to 100 HP. A 200 HP outboard doesn't make a boat go 2X faster than a 100 HP (probably 25% faster if you're lucky) and it wastes huge amounts of fuel. Less was more in the 1960s even though gas was dirt cheap adjusted for inflation. People were a little bit smarter about how they wasted their money years ago. LOL. Now they are just flat out stupid about how they waste money.

    • @dynodon7917
      @dynodon7917 8 лет назад

      A 200 hp engine can push a larger boat much faster than a 100. Larger engines work less at the same speed as smaller engines.

    • @dynodon7917
      @dynodon7917 8 лет назад +3

      In addition to the above a 200 hp on the same size boat as a 100 will push it much more than 25%. TBM tested a 100 then a 175 on the same boat and the 100 would barely plane it and managed around 26 mph whereas the 175 had much stronger (obviously) time to plane, mid range and topped out at about 46 mph. A 200 would have probably hit 50. This is nearly 2x the 100 top speed. I like the fact that the market offers a wider range of power choices today than that of the 60s. Of course when Merc hit 150 hp in '73 ppl were saying "this is way too much power."

    If the 70s Weren't bad enough as a generation of people who were evidently blind! Bell bottoms were disgusting and WTF is up with the color's and prints of their clothes back then??? SMFH thank God I came along as this horrible decade was coming to a close 😅!!! Otherwise I would have to go burning every single picture of my youth! Yeah I'm serious and yes it really was that bad looking! Not to begin to mention the hair styling and lack of cutting it! Along with the facial hair which was attached to the chest hair and the leisure suits 🤔 and those stupid looking oversized button up shirt collars! Holy WTF??? So I'm gonna go out on a limb here??? I have to guess that mirrors being glued onto the ceilings over beds are the best reason for all the horrific dressings and lacking of hair maintenance??? SMFH! Ugh! I understand......"this was all about being rebellious to the man!" NOPE! It's really just called the decade of looking and acting like crap...... because it's easier to be a slob than look presentable in public! Now this hopeless new generation X or whatever it is? Is fine just going out in public wearing their bed clothes and slippers! And not taking a shower if their lucky once a week because their too tied to their phones and video games or social media. God, if anyone actually knew how most these retards looked on FB or Twatter, they'd be lucky to know the other person on the opposite side of their screens probably not even dressed at all!!! Sick world we have anymore 😪 and getting worse by the minute it looks....... but otherwise the 50s through the early 60s in the video was pretty cool to see how people lived back then. 🙄
