  • Spoon theory has been used to explain what it is like living with chronic illness like multiple sclerosis (MS). It was introduced in 2003 by Christine Miserandino. She used it to explain what it is like living with chronic illness. In this video I explain what spoon theory is and offer tips on managing our spoon count.

I did a workshop for some of my spoonie friends at a retreat. They had never heard of the theory before so it was fun to teach them what it meant. We also did a craft afterward, everyone got a wooden spoon and got to decorate it with the glitter, bells, tinsel, ribbon, anything they wanted. We all put "My Last Spoon" on it so we had one left for each day, a symbol of never run out of your spoons. It's probably the best explanation I've ever seen for any chronic illness. It works for Lupus, MS, fibromyalgia, and many others. My husband will even ask me if I have enough spoons when we're doing something and he will whisk me away if I'm getting tired. A good partner who understands both your illness and the spoons is a wonderful person to be with. :)

I love that you decorated spoons and called them “my last spoon.”! You are so right, it is key to have a person that understands and can whisk us away!

My neurologist told me about the spoon theory today, as a teen with two different chronic conditions it makes me feel so seen! I like that it explains why I can't do everything my friends can. For anyone else with dysautonomia symptoms, something that really helps is carrying around an ice pack and cold with me in the summer to help regulate my temperature

Yesrerday, I spent the entire day not being able to do anything because the day before i ran out of spoons and even tried to use a handful of forks to get me through the day. Today, i came across your video and i take it as a sign. I needed to hear your message to remimd me that i cant expect to run 100mph like i did before. I know it sucks, and i do not like being unproductive, but somehow i need to find and make peace with myself amidst my limitations. Thank you for putting things in perspective.

Aw, I am sorry you ran out of spoons (and forks)! It is all about finding a balance of using our spoons and replenishing them isn’t? Have a nice glass of water, a good diner, and a restful sleep. Tomorrow is a new day!

You explained the spoons so well! I can identify with them all, like making a meal and being too tired to eat, & for me showering & washing my hair uses several spoons. And when I run out of spoons, my body just shuts down. I try to plan my day so I can do things in spurts, and rest in between. I have a cup of coffee in the morning, & then drink water for the rest of the day. And I eat a healthy plant based diet, with lots of green veggies!

Using spoons is great to explain MS. People will get it. But I used decorative stones, the kind you find at Walmart. I would count out at least 30 of them, depending on my daily activities. Each stone would represent a daily activity. For example your morning routine(getting up, going to the bathroom, having a shower, getting dressed, brushing your teeth…) having breakfast, making breakfast, would constitute as many as 10 or 12 stones. Those stones would then be taken away from your 30 stones. Each activity you do would take away a stone from the pile. Until finally you’re down to 4 stones, or less, before crawling into bed. And you haven’t even considered reading or medication before closing your eyes. This method got people to understand what a person has to go through on a daily bases. No matter what the decease was. And I have been using this method for years. It’s nice to know my method wasn’t crazy.

Now this video hits a homerun to the first pitch to me.I mean a bull's eye shot right on target. I couldn't have described better that analogy for fatigue. Okay well maybe i would choose to use batteries instead of spoons but hey, The Matrix will do just fine. And it reminds us that spoons can be bent if we bend our minds first.

But we need to focus first and make a conscious and consistent effort which is the tricky part. Avoiding doozy steps is an art all by itself. Easy to start and hard to master. (Consistency).

I didn’t know how it came about. For me, keeping “on an even keel” is so important, otherwise I end up borrowing spoons from the next day and go into “Boom & bust” - it’s difficult to do, though, as it all seems such a fine balance!!
