You seem to have stumbled into a little known aspect of Brazilian cooking: texture. Flavor is, of course, a must in any food, but texture is crucial. And for texture I don’t mean just “crunchy”, but all sorts: chewy, mochi-like, and the king of all Brazilian food shibboleths, farofa-dry and crunchy, basically a dry sauce, if there is such a thing.
Hey it's interesting to see Brazilian pastel. Here in Indonesia, that pastry is also called 'pastel' specially with the exact shape same as in the video only the size is smaller. Looks like the Portuguese brought it to SE Asia first before the Dutch or British came. While in Malaysia, they change to call it 'curry puff/karipap' but in Indonesia it's still pastel commonly. I think Indonesian pastel is really vegetarian, the filling is usually potato or carrot or egg and vermicelli. Love the food ❤️
Brazilian pastel is an adaptation the Chinese immigrants made of theirs when they came here around 100 years ago, you can even visit the first houses that started to produce them in São Paulo.

We definitely have a lot besides meat and many regions with their own cuisine, I think they focus on meat because it is one of the products sold abroad that represents Brazil. Also bazilian meat is really good compared to other countries (even being vegetarian I know that)

Passion fruit "maracujá" is a very interesting fruit. It has a sturdy shell and a very soft pulp inside, that is why you don't peel, you just cut open in the middle and scoop the goods in it. So, the most traditional way to eat maracujá is by cutting it open, and put what you want inside like sugar, honey, or nothing at all, so you just eat it with a spoon. That is why the name Maracujá, in its original Tupi (indigenous language) "Mara Kuya", which means "food in a bowl" (comida na cuia). That is my favorite fruit ever, and a gem from my country. That is it, thanks for coming to my TED.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! so happy that you enjoyed our food! When you have a square or rectangular pastel you bite the corners and blow through one of them to force the steam out ! About the mousse, you can make it tarter, just add more juice!
farofa is a national passion here in Brazil!! Many take bacon but I only make it with onion and garlic because I don't eat pork and it's amazing! oh and you have to taste the couscous, have you heard of it?
This episode made me happy. The choices are different from what I would have recommended but it just shows how diverse the cuisine is! Brazilians definitely know how to feast and how to part-ay! lol
Muito lindo ver a mesa tão colorida ao final, a nossa culinária é tão linda, tão simples e tão cheia de amor. É extremamente doloroso saber que muitos não tem o que comer, aqui na nossa terra 😢
I'm so happy about this video!!!! As a brazilian I can guarantee: our food is the best!!!! Hahaha Thank you for sharing your thoughts Beryl! Love your videos 💜
**Farofa not farafa! I try to cook different cuisines a lot, and I've got to say that Brazillian food is the bomb!!! The best recipes were Caruru, Xim-Xim(Chicken stew thickened with cassava and coconut milk and the palm oil that gives it a lovely colour!), Empanadinhas, and Mocqueca de Camaroes.. I need to cook more Brazilian food!
My mouth is watering! Brazilian food is amazing, and thanks for introducing some interesting dishes- definitely will add to my food delivery repertoire!
This brought such good memories! Pastel is such an icon food here that my high school has a 20-year tradition with the Math teacher that every last day of graduation year the seniors made Pastel alongside the teacher and ate it all by themselves 😂 🥰 cheese pastel is actually just as iconic as the meat version, so bang on Beryl!
For anyone in the comments who is curious, farofa is extrenely easy to make. Go look up a tutorial trust me it's so worth it. I honestly couldn't imagine myself living without it
My mom is from Colombia if she ever does a video on this subject maybe I could possibly submit a video to her on how my mom makes her empanadas and the sauce that goes with it because it’s a delicious green looking sauce🥟😋🥰
@@warribe I'm pretty sure there are places in the world that fry empanadas. Plus, different types of dough used to make things that are called empanadas. Which version are you thinking of?
This is the best Brazillian food tasting video I ever seen, it truly uses the original recepies and presentations, unlike many other channels that did the same theme... And even adding a lot of context for each dish! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing our culture in the right way!
Its so nice to see a video when I know the taste of everything and I got very excited to see what Beryl will thing about the taste of the food. I really love this series!!
I think you should have tried "arroz, feijão e bife com batata frita" which I think is THE universal feast in Brazil. The dish is basically rice, beans, fried beef and fries. If you put farofa in it, I promise you, it's gonna be one of the best things you'll ever eat. It is so simple, but SO good.
Such a fun video to watch. As a ex-New Yorker now living in Sao Paulo, it was fun to see you order from a great restaurant I used to go to and to see your reaction to some of the foods. Brasilian food is highly under-rated, IMO. Pastel...yum...best eaten on a Saturday morning at the green market (feira). Calabresa, linguica, or any Brasilian sausage...they are the best! I think the best line was "I have a friend, she too likes sausages." And, Farofa...hard to explain to people if you cannot have them taste it but it's just perfect on any food.
Brazilian food is awesome. South America is often overlooked for great food. So many options, had a Pastel yesterday for lunch (calebrese, peppers, and onions).
Ok, tip for the main dish display if you ever would like to try it again: put the beans on top of the rice and then coat it with farofa, then you put the beef on the side and the bananas or some baked potatoes with them to eat. You will not regret it haha hope you enjoy brazilian food again Beryl :D
Hey Beryl! You should definitely do an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant version of this segment! 😍 There are a lot of really good Ethiopian restaurants in New York and the cuisine is very unique and yummy too! I love your channel btw! 😊
loved seeing a very accurate video about what we eat out, pastel is what we eat at the beach, at home, in the street fair.. everywhere every ocasion really but in summer even more (at least in rio de janeiro). dadinho de tapioca at the bar, farofa everywhere hahahah specially at barbecues. anyways love it :)
Tip: Another nice vegetarian option for pastel is heart of palm (palmito) that could be compared with shredded chicken breast in texture and mushrooms in taste. It is very filling and delicious and depending on the preparation, completely vegan.
Honestly not really sure where the whole "brazillian food is just steak" thing came from (granted we do love barbequeues and its a staple in southeast Brazil, the most popular part of the country) but this video actually accuratelly portrays the cuisine, and from all over the country. I would suggest acarajé too, which is mostly made in Bahia but I personally love it.
The cheese in question comes from the Brazilian standard cow, which is closer to the Asian water buffalo, and tends to be fairly simple. But yes, pasteis are normally not heavily seasoned since they are the Brazilian equivalent of street hot dogs.
Pastel or “pastelillos” as we call them in PR might just be my favorite food group. Hot and crispy, right out of the fryer, with a cold juice… nothing better
Ok! Eventually you should make a video with the top dishes you order again, from these videos! It's so fun to order different cuisines and add a wild card I've never tried. Your videos have given me some background, but I usually pick a random dish that sounds good:) I'd be curious to see which of these dishes make it on your typical orders:)
Now you’ll have to come to Astoria’s little Brazil. There’s a large grocery store that also serves food and has a delicious pineapple soft serve. I am so glad that you made this video and I’m sorry you burned your mouth doing it.
Some observations: You're absolutely right, we use mozzarela for our cheese pasteis! CORRECT! By the way, we usually add some oreganum, so shame on the person who didn't add oreganum and a little bit of salt to it. And we eat pastel, sometimes you can order something called "pastel de vento" (wind pastel), it's just the crunchy dough and I must be honest and admit I like it a lot, sometimes I just feel like eating the dough and that I don't need any filling. Cashew Juice is not made from the fruit, what we call the "fruit" is actually a pseudo-fruit. The nut is the fruit. It's a very common and omnipresent juice in Brazil, but I hate adstringent stuff, so I prefer the artificial flavor. I LOVE artificial cashew juice, but can't stand the real thing because of its adstringency.
Loved to see you enjoying our food, brazilian food is amazing! The rice, beans and farofa mixture is such an everyday food, even without the picadinho, I love it! We even have a popular meal called Prato Feito that usually comes with rice, beans, some fries, meat (or a fried egg) and a side salad. You could do a whole episode only on the various ways we eat beans 😂 Meals like feijão tropeiro, tutu, acarajé, prato feito, baião de dois... The list goes on 😂 And thanks for sharing your experience with food around the world! I've been learning a lot and trying new recipes ❤️
I love to try new food in general but I'm always nervous. Thanks to Beryl and her unwaivering positivity about nearly everything she tries, I feel confident enough to really branch out. I hope you enjoy the meal! :D

That is it, thanks for coming to my TED.
never seen asha so interested in the feasts you've eaten in this series. i mean, she was THERE. poor baby 😅 ...also try JAMAICAN cuisine next.
Oooo yes! Beryl, please do Jamaican cuisine next!!
Asha was being cuturally correct!! lol
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! so happy that you enjoyed our food! When you have a square or rectangular pastel you bite the corners and blow through one of them to force the steam out !
About the mousse, you can make it tarter, just add more juice!
E
add more passion fruit juice? im from Malaysia, Brazilian cuisine looks absolutely delicious!!! 😋
@@MarkWTK thank you!!! Hope you can find a restaurant or the ingredients to make it!!
For the mousse, you can use less condensed Milk and more chantilly if you want less sweet
farofa is a national passion here in Brazil!! Many take bacon but I only make it with onion and garlic because I don't eat pork and it's amazing! oh and you have to taste the couscous, have you heard of it?
i like mine with crispy soy instead of bacon :)
Te entendo! Force
Infelizmente isso acontece no mundo inteiro
Total, gente e nós aproveitamos os alimentos quase inteiramente quase, ainda assim a fome voltou
@@catapimbaz ela nunca deixou de existir
I'm so happy about this video!!!! As a brazilian I can guarantee: our food is the best!!!! Hahaha
Thank you for sharing your thoughts Beryl! Love your videos 💜
CAMPO DEL MUNDO
I honestly couldn't imagine myself living without it
I wish she would do a what do you put in your pastelito/empanada/turnover because almost every culture has something similar
I think she has maybe
My mom is from Colombia if she ever does a video on this subject maybe I could possibly submit a video to her on how my mom makes her empanadas and the sauce that goes with it because it’s a delicious green looking sauce🥟😋🥰
Its not like an empanada.. Its fried, not baked and the dough by itself hás absolutely nothing in common with empanada dough
In Indonesia, we call it PASTEL…
@@warribe I'm pretty sure there are places in the world that fry empanadas. Plus, different types of dough used to make things that are called empanadas. Which version are you thinking of?
This is the best Brazillian food tasting video I ever seen, it truly uses the original recepies and presentations, unlike many other channels that did the same theme... And even adding a lot of context for each dish! Awesome video! Thanks for sharing our culture in the right way!
OMG! As a Brazilian living outside of Brazil and seeing this video I just NEED to eat Brazilian food NOW haha. Miss that so much!
Its so nice to see a video when I know the taste of everything and I got very excited to see what Beryl will thing about the taste of the food. I really love this series!!
Two takeaways: 1) Beryl after literally every sip of anything = "Ahhhh" and 2) Asha's guilty face = priceless. I love both!
This was such an emotional episode!!! Dadinho de Tapioca is just my favorite thing, bobó is such a good memory, even the passion fruit
Yuca = mandioca = aipim = macaxeira etc
Very versatile!
Yay! A whole brazilian episode! 💚💛💙Mix the rice, beans and farofa! Farofa is life!
I don't know if was only my impression, but their spoken English is so good.
It's so cool to see ppl from other countries try brazilian food!
I just love so much seeing trying and liking the food from my country ❤
Hey Beryl! You should definitely do an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant version of this segment! 😍 There are a lot of really good Ethiopian restaurants in New York and the cuisine is very unique and yummy too! I love your channel btw! 😊
Yes! Eritrean food is fabulous! There is a great Eritrean restaurant on Geary in SF. Lovely family and delicious food!
I'm Brazilian, and couldn't agree more with you. I once went to an Ethiopian restaurant in NY. I absolutely LOVED the food and the whole experience!
loved seeing a very accurate video about what we eat out, pastel is what we eat at the beach, at home, in the street fair.. everywhere every ocasion really but in summer even more (at least in rio de janeiro). dadinho de tapioca at the bar, farofa everywhere hahahah specially at barbecues. anyways love it :)
Tip: Another nice vegetarian option for pastel is heart of palm (palmito) that could be compared with shredded chicken breast in texture and mushrooms in taste. It is very filling and delicious and depending on the preparation, completely vegan.
I cannot express in words how much I love this series ! Keep it up .
Thank you!!!
This was the takeaway video I was least knowleageable about so far and all of it looked gorgeous. Oh, and #UpstagedByAsha in the most adorable way.
É satisfatório ver você montando os pratos com a comida brasileira com tanto carinho.
Luciana is beyond fabulous. This meal looked epic. I can’t wait to try Brazilian food.
Pastel or “pastelillos” as we call them in PR might just be my favorite food group. Hot and crispy, right out of the fryer, with a cold juice… nothing better
I'm a maracujá guy too (passionfruit), I always choose this one too when I'm taking a desert or an ice cream, or a juice. Thanks Beryl!
Gee, if only there were a Brazilian restaurant in...my state??? This all sounds wonderful!
Ok! Eventually you should make a video with the top dishes you order again, from these videos! It's so fun to order different cuisines and add a wild card I've never tried. Your videos have given me some background, but I usually pick a random dish that sounds good:) I'd be curious to see which of these dishes make it on your typical orders:)
Mensagem do Brasil: " Geralmente o pastel a gente come acompanhado de caldo de cana, é tradicional nas feiras livres do Brasil...
O patrimonio brasileiro
Now you’ll have to come to Astoria’s little Brazil. There’s a large grocery store that also serves food and has a delicious pineapple soft serve. I am so glad that you made this video and I’m sorry you burned your mouth doing it.
This pineapple thing is not a thing in Brazil 😬
Some observations:
You're absolutely right, we use mozzarela for our cheese pasteis!
Meu deus, que pessoal simpático! Adorei ela, pareceu tão feliz comendo nossa comida hahaha ♥️♥️♥️
Loved see you trying Dadinhos de Tapioca! I love this appetizer with Guava Chilli Sauce. Try this sauce! You will love it!
The list goes on 😂
And thanks for sharing your experience with food around the world! I've been learning a lot and trying new recipes ❤️
I love to try new food in general but I'm always nervous. Thanks to Beryl and her unwaivering positivity about nearly everything she tries, I feel confident enough to really branch out. I just adore this channel and how much passion she has for culture and food and the interconnectedness of it all. 💗
So nice see you talking about our food, nossa comida, in this so dificult moment of our country!! I love your chanel!! Eu adoro seu canal!! Obrigada!! I love bobó de camarão, shrimp. And the pastel yumiiii!!! My favorite!! My dog call farofa!!
I love the way you tried our food, its so cute! You and Asha made me smile the entire video haha
If you have an opportunity i suggest moqueca with coconut rice or feijão tropeiro (the best way to eat beans with farofa) and for dessert torta holandesa (the name means dutch pie, but was created here in Brazil haha) or pavê.
I hope you enjoy the meal! :D
WHAT?? At 14:02 she has on her hand, not Sweetened Condensed Milk, but that FORGERY that should be forbidden on stores, "MISTURA LACTEA"
Adorei o video! Seria maravilhoso que pudesse experimentar mais comidas brasileiras aqui no Brasil. Tenho certeza que vai amar :)
Please do more of this series! I love it so much~
Yay!!!!!! I'm glad you liked it all!!! Thanks for this amazing video, Beryl ❤
Such an amazing video! Real Brazilian food, that is actually eaten throughout the country. Also, I liked how each recipe was appropriately described and how respectful you were towards the dishes and the culture. Well done!
(ps: the food really looks yummy and I'm a bit jealous rn. x_x)
Arroz, feijão tropeiro, batata frita, ovo frito e bife, amo essas comidas
appetizer: fried yucca and fish fillets (we call it "iscas de peixe", meaning fish baits) with homemade garlic mayonnaise; entry: a portion of mini pastel's (any flavor you like); main: feijão tropeiro with rice, vinagrete (vinegar salad/sauce with onion, tomato and bell pepper) and churrasco; dessert 1: brigadeiro; dessert 2: condensed milk pudding with caramel
Inclusive ela já comeu isca de peixe se não me engano
I've been expecting this video!!! I love it! Brazil has so many amazing and different food, there's no way you could order all types of them in a single place, but your menu was spot on and an awesome way to start!
GIIIIRL, don't do this to the pastel hahahahah, you're absolutelly burning yourself lol
O GRITO QUE EU DEI QUANDO ELA RASGOU O PASTEL NO MEIO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Dor né
How great to see you enjoying and appreciating a Good Brazilian Food . I love this Channel
im really glad to see that beryl could taste REAL brazilian food!!! it looks exactly like what we eat in our country!! and i hope she liked it
This got me so excited! If I ever find these dishes I'll definitely order them!!!
One of the best representation of Brazilian food I’ve seen in a foreign channel!! The choices are very close to the everyday life in Brazil. I’m a fan, Beryl 🙏🏻
Watching Beryl just makes me sooooo happy
Finally more Brazilian content!!!
It seems like this wasn’t your favorite food type but that’s ok because it makes it more real and authentic! That’s why I love your channel! You keep it legit
why is it I didn't know cashew fruit is used by other cultures? learned something new today.
Where are you from?
As a brazilian, I give your feast a 9 out of 10 just because it lacked a reeeeeally cold beer with all of those dishes!!
Interesting thing about cashew apples: after juicing them, the cashew "flesh" that's is left is an awesome "mock meat" for vegan meals.
I was a little bit concerned that the Brazilian delivery day would be all about meat, but I'm glad to see dishes such as bobó de camarão and mousse de maracujá ❤️ Beryl, come to Brazil!!!!!!! 😘🇧🇷
I really like the new setting!! Your channel connects the world, I think you deserve some kind of award for the content you create. It's so uplifting, creative, original, informative, inspiring and wholesome.
Not so much banana baby food, but I often enjoyed Gerber's Hawaiian Delight as a child way past when I was done with baby food! lol Especially when we were struggling moneywise, it was a cheap way my mom could get us dessert on a weekend.
Os brasileiros arrasaram nas escolhas!
I love Beryl being 100% brazilian and putting farofa in other things 😂
oof that cashew juice made me drool! super classic drink in my homestate rio specially for kids 🥰
Wow... That's incredible!! This is the first time someone ACTUALLY showed what we really eat
13:47 oh god i loved so much that subtitleHAHAHAHAGSHAGAHAH
In portuguese, we actually call it "mousse de maracujá"
