In the Guangxi province of China, fisherman use trained cormorants to help them catch fish from the Li river. A noose tied around the birds' necks to stop them swallowing any fish they may catch. I love when he said that they will simply withdraw labor if not rewarded. Bird strike.
Eh they give them enough of the catch to keep the healthy and strong, give them shelter, veterinary treatment, protect them from any natural predators and probably provide them with an increased chance to mate than in the wild considering the benefits of having more trained comorants to employ. There's probably a good amount of affection between fisherman and bird too much the same as with equestrians. That's a better deal than many nations working class humans get.
Very creative, eco-friendly and artistic way of fishing. I never thought my Chinese figurine of the fishing Chinese with ducks in his bamboo raft would have a story such this until my brother showed this to me.
They're cormorants, not ducks. They're not even related.
@@alex-chan4715 true.
The birds are slaves though how is that any more eco-friendly then regular fishing?
@@aidanwoodford8195 they aren't slaves lol, they serve exactly the same as a hunting dog. Like dogs, they help humans catch prey and we reward them with food. They are men's best friend. And this is definitely more eco-friendly than fishing with nets because you can only catch a few fish a day. Its way more sustainable.
@@aidanwoodford8195 how stupid and brainwashed do you need to be to think working animals are slaves
Simply amazing!
Very cool.
extraordinary!
nice!
YEET!!!!
Awesome !!
Slaves? That's a bit extreme BBC. By that same reasoning, animal husbandry must be a Holocaust for cows etc?
I'm no expert but I'm sure they are pets in the same sense that working dogs are used for hunting are still pets too.
Aside from that remark I enjoyed the rest of the video.
BBC's report on China. What can we expect?
Well, dogs actually have a will to serve their masters. These birds are just being stolen from.
Still, they seem to be okay with the ordeal. They do get fed, and are not mistreated, really.
They are given respect and protection.
The same can certainly not be said about chickens and ducks.
They are only protected until it's time for them to end up on the table.
Poucos tem a inteligência do Povo Chinês.
Wait a min, these birds can both fly and swim?!
Yeah its true if u want proof Then go to China ,denmark, Sweden or Finland bcuz in denmark Sweden and Finland u see why so many People hate cormorants.
If u want the answear why is because it only just poops on Islands like destroying Them like killing trees, Grass, flowers etc. And their shit smells disgusting as fuck
@balqis23977
that's true!
thanks BTW
The bird at the end was like: Price of doing business -_-
Taxes...
They probably ate that one
It beats having a cat or owl attack in the night. Similar to how we offer protection to dogs
The right bird got its leg latched so he cant pursue
Yeah
I laughed so hard at the end when the guy was like 'HA HA HO HO YABBERDABBERDOOO'
Yeah
These birds still look and sound a lot like dinosaurs... Amazing.
Because they are😉
You've heard a dinosaur before?😃
@@slooob23 Was thinking the same.
@@Number-bj1yn Me too... I guess they must've watched Jurassic Park of course...
@@slooob23 lol I was just about to asked that haha i
It's surprising how big the fish are that the cormorants can catch. I expected them to be much smaller, like sardines or smelt.
Typical BBC. Ironically, Fish helping Chinese farmers is called slaves, while Huskies pulling sleds in Alaska or Europe is called friendship and loyalty. Lol ;)))
The dog usually gets something it wouldn’t have had gotten otherwise, the dog gets food in exchange for labor, the bird captures all the fish yet only gets a portion of it, what does the human give the bird in exchange?
The Child Of The Corn it’s not a fair share tho, the bird dos literally all the work, although you could argue the bird is given a safe nesting friend and protection from predators, as well as access to better fishing spots,
Dogs are just so friendly and social that they don't complain when they get the shorter end of the stick.
@@tannerbruning868 Well, the bird does have a higher chance of survival compared to wild birds, since the people will probably kill any animal that messes with their fishing tools.
u need a trigger warning?? lighten up ⬆️
-Even the birds in China are good at math ):
Hahahahahaha funny joke but a little racist but funny
Haha ha ha ha
As an Asian I am laughing my head off 😂
Shah Khan, it’s not racist it’s a compliment and it’s true. Asian are good in math.
😂
The birds are slaves! Give me a break then all working pets are slaves.
Not exactly, the animals usually get more out of that’s arrangement then they would otherwise, that’s the difference between a symbiotic relationship and a parasitic one, give and take, in the case of working animals they get more food then they would normally and protection from predators, in exchange for a portion of their food going to humans, similar to how an ox pecked gets free food and protection while the ox gets a parasite cleaning,
@@tannerbruning868 Hi, Sorry I was just trolling a BBC spin on this video. Thank you for offering a thoughtful opinion. You are clearly a noble person to do it in the comments section. I do agree with you.
@@tannerbruning868 thats overgeneralization, there is no such thing as "usually get more. or get less.", numerous animals have been trained to work (for human) through out all civilizations, they werent slaves, surely aint pets, it is a simple matter of survival. the word συνβίωση simply means to co-exist, literally.
It was a joke lol
We are all slaves to the system
Where my Pokemon fans at? You know why you're here lol
CRAMORANT OH YEAAAH
Or Pelipper?
Cramorant can swallow Kyogre
I prefer using "Pets" instead of "Slaves "
Chinese call their Slaves as Pets.... pathetic
I should try to train a craw to pick neighbour's flower

HA HA HO HO EYAAAUGH
He actually said
"Hey, hey, hey, HEY! COME BACK!"
But lmao HA HA HO HO EYAAAURGH
Lmfao maybe that the bird s name...🤷😆
Ending is superb😂😂😂😂
Appreciate camera man to shoot perfect underwater shots
Loved the one at the end - naughty cormorant. I far more prefer this relationship between fisherman and 'fisherbird' than the western one which is just for the former to kill the latter :), we can learn something from the guys in this vid.
They had this on Ray Mears the other week. Fascinating how the birds and the humans have this relationship with each other and work together to get the fish. Trust the Beeb to call the birds "slaves!". Might have known!.
BBC arse holes as usual
"the TV licence payers are in effect... Victims of extortion"
I like this and I sure would like to try it but the bad thing about this is them picking them up by their necks and the knot in their neck I don't think they can swallow a fish that big
Believe me, these birds are treated family. They are loved, revered. I bet you couldn't buy one from them.
Amazing what man and animal can achieve together.
You mean exploitation lol??
it's a dying skill. hopefully this practice will have a revival.
John Booker tourism is actually helping this skill to survive.
obsidianstatue I'm glad to hear it . thx
didn't any of you read ping growing up? that was a fabulous children's book
They are totally slaves. Except for the fact they receive better food, nutrition, shelter, and social interaction than all other birds. Also, they are not doomed to die a slow death which is common for 90 percent of animals
what are they gonna do, chase them in the water? these birds are better swimmers than they are. Its a good system. The birds are worked sure, but its no different than a hunting dog.
the birds probably are protected well and have a decent place to sleep, otherwise, they would probably just swim away. even if they cant fly. you noticed those dudes were just guys on rafts, not power boats.
^ a gramatical and jumbled mess of ideas but you get the point. You seem like a smart guy.
Ok 6 years old comment but anyway - did you not notice the guys tied their necks so tight they can't swallow before they release them in the water? The birds die if they swim away. The reason they are staying is not because the guys protect them and shelter them but because they are enslaved. They'd do just fine on their own.
This is truly green farming :)
Loved the ending!
This epic as hell
Nature using Nature to attack Nature (Humans using birds to attack fish) lol
The BBC should do a video on our 'slave' dairy cows. Wait that wouldn't be as interesting. Mooooo
I have been there for a few times, I love there a lot. Environment friendly.
Correct! Besides, we can see that those birds aren't tied down or something. They are free to leave anytime, but they choose to live with their masters. In fact, it was said in the video that they will leave if their master if they are not being paid well. So I think they have a better life and a better job with benefits and privileges that I myself am not getting from my company. Haha
These cormorants are rewarded and trained....so they are pets.
Aid dogs are abused by disabled ppl all the time in America.....so yeah we are no different from anyone.
I see same thing in my hometown when I was a child. But noone does it now
2:54 Mine!
I swear to god everything Asian is good at Math
That is very cool and interesting!! I was just reading about it in Amy Tan's novel "The Joy Luck Club" for school. It's surprisingly a very good book and the author described the fishing very well!

It seems Double-crested cormorants are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), so I’ll be unable to try this technique myself.

Cormorants only catch adult fish. Nets capture both young and adult fishes that destroy fish population. Its kinda cruel for the cormorants but okay for a sustainable livelihood and the ecosystem.
It was certainly a good way to make a living. Unfortunately, it's mostly just for show, today.
Basically the birds do all the work.
I came here from an episode of Good Mythical Morning. Specifically season 1 episode “Eating Chinese Hornets for Breakfast.”
I came here from an episode of Good Mythical Morning. Specifically season 1 episode 4 titled “Chinese Hornets for Breakfast.”
This is where Chinese scholars thousands of years ago in service to Emperors thought of Capitalism and now the whole world of humanity is each one of these cormorants at some level. Including the bosses. lol.
Its like using ferrets, dogs, and falconry for hunting. Human dominion over animals never ceases to amaze me
I didn't know birds like cormorant get existed that way when will get fish. 2:25
Seems there are many people ready to be prisoned, fed and took care of, for having their nature habits controlled by their prisoner! 🤦🏻♂️
It is a traditional fishing method that is also handed down in Japan.
Carbon free fishing. Symbiosis at its best. No wonder you said the river was one of the cleanest. Human intelligence👍
well what do you think causes other rivers to be polluted lol it’s human activity
I wouldn't say they're slaves that would be like calling horses or cows slaves they're livestock

Yay..China's cleanest river...so like the most polluted river in the USA.
Thats how mafia works
that's how the Japanese does too, but the man in the documentary didn't have to tie the birds' neck. search for this video. I'm not sure which part it is, but I think it's at the end of this one here. Satoyama (narrated by David Attenborough) 1/6
I really don't like this. tying string around the birds neck to stop it from swallowing? its horrible :(
WTF? why are tehy alzy ... alteast they are standing while fishing xD
we just have a stick and a string .... and we asit on the bay waiting for somethign to bite!
These birds remind me of the billions of people in this world being brainwashed and forced to work all day for low pay (1 fish for 7?? These birds have no standard of living like a person abusing/stuck in the welfare system) and settling as slaves because that's the only thing they know how to do anyway since they were born in a society that traps them just like the owners of these birds do (and are). If he didn't tie a noose around their neck, they would just swallow the fish... meaning the fish do not understand or care about the fisherman or his intentions, they just want to do what their genetic instincts tell them. There is no real relationship or even training, just brainwash from birth.
+Truth of Tucson How about dogs, horses, cow, etc.
True dat!!!
I only went into to comment section because i expected exactly this kind of comment, lol.
You are right, the birds do not understand the person and his intentions, they just do what their instincts/training tell them.
But how can you then go ahead and compare this to a human who works for his living.
You think you'd be better on your own?
Farming for food, all by yourself? I doubt it. But you have the choice to do it.

I like it at the end when the bird steals the big one
@jimmyPain2121 oh im sorry i thought you were making fun of chinese names haha my bad :D oh well they are from the same village so maybe thats why? LOL
now, that is using nature to provide food for yourself. Asians the brilliant est people on the planet.
Fish was like "And I have been told to stay home"
This is fascinating
When you say these birds aren't stupid but think they can eat more fish themselves whenever the collar is removed . They are used to slavery .
Same with horses, dogs, cats,... Animals are human's slaves.
Can anyone plz tell me why so many Arabic comments here? no offences, just wondering...
We use tools and we take care of them. It's a symbiotic relationship. Don't worry too much about it.
This is how you supposed to do when you fishing, not using bomb
i was there in that place.......its a beautiful place.
no fish left in the river.......
والله ماظنتي واتس اب ... شكله باوربوينت
Drift nets catch everything, then they grind it into "fish meal" which is then fed to pigs which are later turned into to bacon.

@HistoryHmoobGuy not verbally targeting them.. i mean't physically targetting them
...cormorants can keep a tally of the fish they catch...
@6318374 Lol of course, otherwise the bird wouldn't come back XD
The bird are food. Flamingo own habitat.
lol the end was funny
Thats genius
