@@srikanthsv79 because he wanted to take the game Deep and do the hitting in the last overs. And I don't think it was a bad idea, because in many of his innings he has started slow and ended with a decent strike rate.

When Dhoni comes to bat at a time where wickets are falling, he tries to hold the innings from one end. And this approach has been successful many times, so I don't blame him. I can give one of the many examples... In an ODI against Australia (2017) India were reeling at 87 for 5. Hardik Pandya did the hitting while MS Dhoni hold the fort at one end and kept rotating strike, while Hardik did the hitting, some will say that MS Dhoni should have also started hitting but I believe he was doing the right things since Dhoni-Hardik were last recognised batsmen So if Dhoni would have gotten out then it would have been difficult for Hardik Pandya and he would not have been able to hit as well as he was hitting during the partnership with Dhoni(Hardik scored 83 off 66). MS Dhoni finished his 50 off 75 balls. And after that he started hitting and hit the next 13 balls for 29 runs. And this is just one example of many such innings. I am not saying his approach is always successful sometimes he would get out in between making his approach in vain, what is approaches not a bad idea either.
