I haven’t finished the video yet but at $22,000 you got an excellent deal I know at 1 point low trim, Porsche Cayman were going for $40,000+ And yours is a bit of a higher trim Cayman last I checked similar cars to yours but brand new one for $149,000cad
Top tip: When you pay cash for a car from a non-affiliated dealer (or private seller)… GET THE TITLE WITH THE CAR. If they can’t give it to you that day, that means they don’t own the car and are not authorized to sell it to you.
Normally, You'd learn that from your Dad when you're about 15....Super Weird for a Dealer of any size to have a vehicle with no title/title issues even on it's lot though. I've ran a high volume Yota Dealership from top to bottom & I don't think I would even ask. This is DC though apparently. LimpWrist Democrats don't have a clue about anything in the real world.
Super excited to see the progression of this channel, Luke! You’re one of my favorite tech RUclipsrs, and finding out that you’re into cars as well has made my day. Keep up the great content my man!
Buying a car from a dealer = yikes. Big name dealer and small dealer have a huge markup. Big name dealer will usually take care of you tho versus a no name one. I've been a mechanic my whole life so no biggie for me but if you're not, you need to have any vehicle you may buy, inspected by a mechanic. I'm glad you started this channel because I'm a car guy and a computer guy
I'm an idependent German auto mechanic, and I have to hand it to you... you certainly DID get screwed there. Hardcore. That's one of the craziest stories I've ever heard for sure.
This is giving me flashbacks, I also bought a silver 2006 Cayman S from a shady dealership in Texas. I was afraid they were going to take off with my down payment, but then everything turned out OK. Unless you count all the same problems you had minus the coolant hose and adding a bad starter.
Lawyers don't work for free. Factor in the lawyer cost on top of the mechanic costs as money you put into it. Your initial statement on not wanting to invest four grand into the Porsche came full circle with the lawyer and now the mechanic. My sympathies to you man. Scummy car dealers are the worst and they run rampant in Texas. Look forward to the next episode and hopefully you get to enjoy the car for many miles after this initial hiccup!
The coolant pipes are a known issue. Here in the UK the pipes are about £200 and if you do your own maintenance, it’s a relatively cheap fix. The beauty of the Cayman is that it’s easy to work on. Regarding Porsches being expensive to maintain, if you use a dealership, yes it is. A high performance BMW will be much more expensive to maintain. Subscribed!
This sounds like a nightmare. In Sweden when you buy from a dealer these days you no longer send owner documents by mail you do it online and it’s done right away on the board of transportation website. I’ve heard similar stories happen before though. Unfortunately bad dealers exist here too and many pop and go away after a few months as I’ve discovered. That’s why I these days personally only buy from a place that’s existed for decades and I know to trust.
Your niche is so cool. Buying premium products for a song and repairing/upgrading them is very unique and cool. Looking forward to following the car journey.
Working on Porsche. Difficulty finding a service manual. Modding.. Only able to be custom tunes by certain places. No DIY tuning suites. No damos files for specific cars. I almost want to gut my Porsche and put low end VW electronics in.
Super excited that we’re able to watch our favorite tech youtubers get more into car-related content. MKBHD, Quinn from Snazzy Labs, Austin Evans, (even Jon Rettinger w/ his lucid air) have all done this in some way and it’s super interesting to watch car content from the perspective of someone who lives and breathes technology.
I enjoyed your first video on your new channel and look forward to watching more. I hope you learned that whenever you are going to but a used car (any used car), you should always have a mechanic inspect it before you buy it. Even if you are dealing with a dealership, it is by default considered an as is sale in the US. Of course, you can negotiate for a warranty but that is only useful if the dealership is both trustworthy and local to you. If you are considering buying from non-local dealership then get a mechanic of your choosing to inspect it first so that you know what you are getting into. All that said, I realize that you somehow switched vehicles since the video on the main channel has you in a different (and seemingly much better) Cayman S. Good luck with everything and I have to say that it is a great choice of vehicle. Definitely one of my favorite driving memories is when I borrowed my brother's Cayman S for a week. I know that you will enjoy it even more since you are customizing it and truly making it your own. Cheers...
Your personal story is the best experience you could possibly gain in your new endeavor brotha, excited for you! Bumpy start but we’re optimistic in spite of this
I had no idea you were in the DC area! Quick intro to me: I'm the PCA member who lives closest to the center of the Potomac Region (aka the Washington Monument), and my dad's been around for a long time: he's doing a live broadcast video with the PCA on Wednesday night. I've currently got a modified 996TT (~600hp?) that's a lot of fun, even though it stays tucked away in my underground garage 99% of the time! Holler if you ever want to go for a drive!
For 22K I think you got a good deal!! The oil separator is a common issue, also check for IMS bearing and RMS. it is common knowledge with these cars that when bought used you have to put money into them. A pristine example would have cost you way more.
as an ex-Porsche technician, I can reassure you that no PPI can assess the condition of the IMS. A rough guide is to change the oil and filter and check between the oil filter pleats for tiny shavings. If any tiny particles are seen, it’s a ticking time bomb with regards to the engine
thats a nightmare of a story I hope to never go thru! Good on you for getting thru it, love the channel! Especially since this is a car iv wanted since high school now in my 30s i can finally save towards getting myself one :D
You can buy a new torque converter from pelican parts or fcp euro but they are about 1,000 dollars. You can also get it rebuild locally or send it to precision torque conveter industrial for half the price.
I had the same coolant issue with the 2005 Boxster S that I bought, 3 months after I got it. Same, just over 1000 bucks to fix. Never heard of this type of issue with 997 models before, so thing to be aware of.
Man, I used to live in the DC area. Gotta say I'm enjoying watching those shots of you driving around down there. I love car content, and an interesting bankruptcy angle it seems (I happen to be a bankruptcy practitioner so I find that stuff interesting even if no one else does :P). Can't wait to see what else you do on this channel (hopefully with cars that actually work).
A robbery is the “use of force or the threat of force to retain and escape with the property.” This wasn’t a robbery you exchanged cash in return for the “cheapest Cayman S in America”
Agreed, the tool is $100 the service is probably $500. But in fairness these are complicated and there are underlying issues a dealer can best help identify. The P and S in Porsche seams to be for Pain and $. Says me in a parralel situation with a Boxster
That's why you only buy cars in person! And you take it to your own mechanic to get it checked out. And never buy a vehicle from a fly by night. Make sure it's established dealership. If it deals sounds too good to be true it definitely is!
I'd suggest learning how to wrench if you plan on owning a 'cheap Porsche'. I've done tons of work to my 987S and would be broke if I had to pay the $200+ per hour that the Porsche dealer is charging.
Ayeee intersport is like 5 minutes from me, it is a serious road hazard- they have the nicest Porsches out in perfect view on route 7, I def break my neck tryin to see what’s out front every time I drive by.
Are you saying "flooring" company furnishes cars to the dealer to sell? They didn't exactly steal your money, did they? Added drama! 😆 You got what you paid for. A used car! People usually trade off cars because they need to much repair. Hopefully, it will be a cheap repair, and you will get the title fixed.
Luke! I’ve been subbed to your main channel since like sub-10k subs. And now you’ve started a channel about my dream car! I want to get a 987.2 in the next year or so once I turn my lease in.
my cheapest porsche has mechanical and cosmetic issues? but how is that possible, i paid bottom dollar and should have gotten a brand new looking and driving car.
The cheapest Porsche you buy will become the most expensive one to own. Hopefully you bought this one to enjoy. It will be impossible for you to do a Wheeler Dealer flip for profit, esp if you have to have a mechanic do all your work and you bought it at the height of the used car bubble. The 987 is fairly easy to work on, you may consider doing some of the jobs yourself if you have any mechanical ability. Sounds like this one has a lot of deferred maint that your PPI didn't uncover. Parts will be expensive, labor is too.
To sell me a car that had the odometer rolled back illegally and even the replacement vehicle I wanted, was even worse in regards to rollback odometer fraud! I am about to send him a letter or offer for settlement along with Demand Notice, as required by Florida law, and he has 30 days to decide his own fate! No matter which way he goes, he is hit! He’s lucky that I am not a regular citizen and cannot move like they do, or he would been had his ass in jail! But I got a better way to get him! Sue has ass in Florida Federal Court and when it’s deposition time, the DoJ and the FBI will probably have copies of his testimony before even I do! Can you say, “book’em Danno”!! As for me, if you ever heard of an axiom law called “negligence per se”, you already know what awaits him behind those courthouse doors! Trying to defraud me was , “not a wise career decision”!! He gets convicted down there, I feel sorry for him!! Worldwide and he will found out! Tried to by a ride and now, I may just get my mini-fleet, ALL AT ONCE!! Smdh! But I will keep you posted!! 😎👌🏿💯💰🔥💲

I’m loving the new channel, Luke. Very cool way to diversify your audience. I enjoy hearing your commentary on this stuff.
Dealership did not steal anything. They took advantage of a very stoooopid person.

As a fan of Apple, Porsche and Luke, I approve of this channel! Now you just need to do some mountain biking content! 😂

Yikes, 22k for a 987.1 CS with the awful Tiptronic and 126k on the clock. You got robbed even if the car was fully sorted.
Wasn't that the cheapest one?

I agree, I find my first gen Cayman shockingly easy to work on. Didn't expect that from a mid engine car.
Huge potential with this channel. Banger story to kick things off.

Even Dankpods but he's not really the typical tech RUclipsr
I want to know more about the dealership you bought the car from. How did you find them, the transaction, anything I could use to identify a scam.
Yeah, car content from one of my favourite tech RUclipsrs, nice!
Personally I’m stuck in the 80s and 90s with my cars, but can’t argue with a Cayman 😎

I've owned a couple Porsches, they are not cheap to repair.........looking forward to the next video.
Simple yet interesting content, will like to see more from the channel Luke.

Hell yes, the start of a new era.
This guy with a car channel??? Instant sub
seems like every other computer guy is also an car guy :P
I’m very original
@@themiddlelanelm yeah me to :P
@@themiddlelanelm I do not confirm this, I also like computers and cars 😮

epic video, what a shame what happened to the car though

I always liked ur laptop content (fixing, lots etc.) and now ur car vids. can't wait for part 2
Great first video, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the channel
Wow that yellow Porsche at 9:49… 🎉
Hey Luke! So glad you made a car channel since I’m a fan of it as well! This is gonna be great!!
The fluctuation on the rpms is the torque converter has a bad tcc. I have the same model and had the same issue.
How were you able to resolve it? I’m not getting any error codes about it, did you end up having to just replace the TCC?
@@themiddlelanelm youd replace the torque converter
You can buy a new torque converter from pelican parts or fcp euro but they are about 1,000 dollars. You can also get it rebuild locally or send it to precision torque conveter industrial for half the price.

Bloody dealership bastards! I feel your pain.
What a nightmare! People can be scummy
You wanted a car to work on but took it to a shop to fix the coolant leak?
In fairness, the coolant system is complex and you need a special tool to bleed all the air out.

Yes. Love this Luke!
What a story!!! Sorry about your luck.
Here we are before this channel blows.
I did a double take when I saw Luke talking lol. Subbed.
but im glad you are taking care of the Porsche!!
Missed opportunity here this channel should have been called Luke Miata;)
Which Cayman???? Year, engine????
Man you did the thing I was too scared to, buying a used Porsche just sounds awesome. Sucks how the events transpired.
Luke you can submit a complaint to the TxDMV for the dealer in question as well. I'm sure you will not be the first, but I would definitely do that.
Out of principle, I refuse to own a car with an electronic hood and/or door release.
Are you saying "flooring" company furnishes cars to the dealer to sell?

LUKE!!!!
You are my fvotie Mac guy and now you're doing Porsche videos!!!
This iasawesome!
I assume that you bought the car as-is. So yeah… other stuff was ridiculous, but the mechanical issues are technically on you. Sucks, but true.
Wiseman said "nothing in this world is more expensive than a cheap Porsche"
I guess a pre purchase inspection would have been a good "X" amount spent.
Luke! I’ve been subbed to your main channel since like sub-10k subs. And now you’ve started a channel about my dream car! I want to get a 987.2 in the next year or so once I turn my lease in.
I know what’s wrong with it!
It ain’t got no gas in it! 😂
I understand some points but what do you expect with over 100k miles
Well, lesson learned: go to a really good and well trusted dealership or don’t go to a dealership at all lol.
I recently bought a cayman S for 16k! Sorry you have been having such a rough time with this!
Waiting for prt two 😀
I will stick to my affordable European cars such as the Saturn Astra, Saab Wagons & Opel Rebadged Buicks
that story was fucking crazy god damn
Is that a she wee on the passenger floor? 😂
What a disaster. Love car content so keep putting out videos.

An intelligent Hoovie. :-)
here we go again
Hey I have that same table lamp
Hope the dealer gets his comeuppance
Why the heck have you been hiding this channel from us, Luke ?
You kinda glossed over the PPI. Was the person performing the PPI also a crook?
The cheapest is the cheapest for a reason .
What City in Texas???
aint no way... someone who likes tech and cars?!
you dont even know how to use the battery booster, you just dont leave there. It seems you did zero PPI or a check up on the car. That's on you.
who pays in cash for a car ?
Not physical cash I just meant figuratively that I paid up front without a loan
Pay peanuts, get monkeys. Subbed for the next bit tho'

Not quite sure what you expected when your criteria was buying the cheapest Porsche Cayman. It was the cheapest Porsche Cayman for a reason.
