I was wondering why I can’t remember ever seeing this film prior to my AEF’s then I finally noticed the date at the start, Oct. 79., which was the month I joined the RAF, I still remember my first AEF from RAF Turnhouse, now Edinburgh Airport, back in 1975, in those days our uniform was still the old “hairy Mary” battle dress and the shirt came with a detachable collar.

We had the battledress uniform but had moved onto normal shirts. Shortly after I left the uniform switched to the Wooly Pully and polyester trousers and were probably a darn sight more comfortable. However, I loved my issued Greatcoat, it kept me warm and dry throughout all the winters that I went through when I was a cadet.

Quite a watch this, I can remember when Paul( the cadet in the film) took the time off school to film this. We were all envious of him. Funny thing is he had hours of flying under his belt before this. His dad was a pilot for British Airways and used to take Paul up in the Cesna's at the local airfield (the was a BA flying club there).
Paul did eventually serve but couldn't fly fast jets as he didn't have 20/20 vision.
Died a few years ago. Still, at least he's immortilised on film.

Sorry to hear Paul has passed on. He was one of my best friends at Marlow ATC. His dad used to take me to Abingdon most weekends to act as staff cadet at the 6 AEF. Didn’t get paid but did get loads of flying. Mr Young used to give me proper lessons. Only just stumbled over this film but remember having to show it each time a unit visited.😂😂

    • @hackdaniels7253
      @hackdaniels7253 3 года назад +2

I watched this WAY more times that I actually flew.
You used to have to go through the rigmarole of getting to the squadron HQ first thing in the morning, catching the squadron minibus for the 40 minute drive to the airfield, then sit in the briefing room, and get shown the film and wait 30 minutes and THEN get told that they weren't flying today - which you knew full and well because the entire week beforehand had been foggy, or hailing, or blowing a gale, or snowing, or... but you had to turn up because that was the entire point of being an air cadet.
Literally, I've been shown this film twice as many times as I've been in a Chipmunk. Well - more now, because I just watched it.

Biggin Hill ATC was extremely well connected to due to its history and we used to get invited to all sort’s of places and get flying. We also had access to the aircraft when the air fair was on and grit to clamber inside all the old birds. We also used to get a lot of gliding in at West Malling, another old aerodrome steeped in history. Great times.

I was at Abingdon and stood in as Staff Cadet whilst this was being filmed. Paul was actually already on his way as a pilot and his father was one of the instructors here - he often flew in the front cockpit with the instructor in the back as it was in the ‘real’ RAF aircrew training. He was a nice guy, found me a flying suit from stores and I still have the 6 AEF patch and a photo of me on the wing of a Chippy, looking like I know what I’m doing! I’m very sad to read that he’s passed away.

As a cadet in the 50s, I had exactly this 'first flight experience' in a Chippy but not a fraction of training / advice shown in this A1 video.
The WAAF pilot at RAF Shawbury, took the aircraft through various aerobatics, enough to terrify a 17 year old kid but she was such a good looker that I wasn't going be afraid with such a handsome 'older' woman. She must have been about 24!
    Great memories, Great Youth Training.
I went on in career not into flying but into electronics, and not with the RAF.
My ATC Squadron was 292 Eccles. Their A1 HQ and Parade ground were sold off for housing.
I am trying to find where they are now and to make contact with them but scant info. can be found on Internet.
If anybody has any gen. please let me know!
    Thank you.

Fabulous stuff. My first flight in anything, ever, was an AEF in a Chippy out of Woodvale in roughly 1974. My happiness was greatly enhanced by the sight of my pal Mick, who flew before me, climbing out ashen-faced carrying a bulging sick-bag, his dream of becoming an RAF pilot now abandoned. How incredibly cool all the RT chatter sounded as we taxied. "What would you like to do?" I was asked as we took off. "As many aerobatics as possible, please, Sir". "That's what I want to hear" he said and duly obliged. Bloody lovely. It was another twenty years before I pulled my first solo aerobatic manoeuvre (a loop, naturally) in the blazing sunshine over the Pacific, just off the coast at Long Beach, with a whale and her calf making their way north up the coastline 5000 feet below me. Had to be done. Loved every minute.

A nice memory, I had hours of this in the 60s with our school ATC, I loved flying and the Chippy remained my favourite aircraft, in the 60s it was a lot less regimented we still had the safety procedures to learn but there was no cumbersome bone dome we used the old leather flying helmets with the throat mike. I never needed the sick bag in a chippy but later when we were flying in Hastings and I think Britanias and Vikings, I did once or twice when we were doing that over-the-hump manoeuvre for zero gravity experience, I soon learned to leave the pies alone before a flight. I loved the ATC it was the perfect induction into RAF life.

47 years have past and the instructions and vocal commands and responses came flooding back as if I was sitting in a Chipmunk on my first A.E.F out of Hamble Aerodrome, over The Solent to the flying area over the Isle Of Wight.
That was my first ever experience of flying and what an impact it had on me.
Every time the list asking for cadets who wanted to go down to Hamble was posted, my name was among the first to be written on it.
I managed to get four Chipmunk flights from Hamble and one from RAF Cosford, while at summer camp at nearby RAF Shawbury.
The Chipmunk was a delightful aircraft to fly in and was always very responsive when I was given the opportunity to take control of it for those all too short moments.
Thank you for putting this film up for people to see and remember.
From an ex ATC Leading Cadet, 225(no 1 Brighton) Squadron.

After I did gliding with cadets, I joined a small club and there they have a Chipmunk as one of the tugs, I've gone up in it and I have to say it is such a wonderful aircraft. (Callsign is G-BCCX)

I will never forget the flights I had in Chipmunks. Flew out of both RAF Finningley and RAF Shawbury in the 80s. My first flight and the first plane I ever went in, didn't go great. We had been told, just as the film states, that we should talk to the pilots. We were told they were doing this in their own time and it gets boring for them otherwise. I spent the entire flight saying only "Yes sir. No sir" because I was too nervous to do otherwise. Poor pilot. On a later flight, from Finningley we flew over some striking miners picketing a coal mine. My pilot pealed into a dive and started making machine gun noises! It tickled me. It still does. Thanks for reminding me.

1137 Sqn East Belfast, flew as a Staff Cadet with 13 AEF, Bulldogs, mid to late 80’s. The troubles in Northern Ireland were in full swing but slew were able to blag lots of AEF hours each weekend with the local operational helicopter squadrons in Gazelle, Wessex, Lynx and occasionally Chinook. Range time was often with 3 Sqn RAF Regiment with SLR, LMG and Sterling and then L85a1 ( not the cadet version). Most of us ended up signing up. I did 26 years in the Army. I should’ve stayed light blue!
Getting in a Chipmunk was very different experience and I felt like I was in the Battle of Britain! Wonderful memories! Thanks for the upload and taking me back!

This brings back memories, I first did some Chipmonk flying just after very basic flightsim had started coming out. So prior to my first flight I'd spent hours on Vic-20 instrument only flightsim so had no problems flying straight and level just from the instruments. The staff must have caught on to this because when I went flying again a few months later they had put masking tape over the instruments to stop cadets using them instead of flying by eye.

My first flight was in a Chipmunk out of RAF Binbrook. Went there in 1963 with 342 Squadron ATC in Hanwell Middx. Had a great time for a week away from home. I was 13 and quite short for my age, had to wear a regular parachute under my arse. I do recall the pilot explaining to me how to exit the aircraft if we needed to. Most importantly he said " If I tell you to bail out, you better do that, because you will be on your own if you don't." We flew out over the North Sea and then circled back. I prayed that we didn't have to jump out of the aircraft over the water, as I didn't know how to swim. Wonderful memory of that day though, never forgot the thrill of leaving the earth and flying up and away.

I flew in WZ878 from Teesside Airport in the late 1980s while in 2505 Sqn ATC. I remember asking the pilot how will I know if I have to escape in the air.? His reply was 'I'll tell you once and then if you see me with my parachute open floating away, you'll know to get out quick!!' We always watched Top Gun while waiting to be called. I always seemed to get called just after Goose was killed. Not the biggest confidence boost.

Never got any AEF in our mob but managed a couple of hundred hours later on sitting in the front. No parachutes or lifejackets, just a pair of disgusting headphones and even worse throat mics. Colleague inverted his one day and the biro that fell off the floor went straight up his nostril causing a massive nosebleed that completely blinded him …
Accidentally discovered that the Chipmunk could be placed in an interesting level but stalled attitude and it descended vertically like a lift with no IAS - open the throttle and it just motored forward into normal flight - was only able to do it once more ‘tho I was told the CFI could do it on demand
Probably the most enjoyable flying in my career …
