Hearing that it was called the California was all I needed before assuming it wasn't on sale in the US. If it were, it would be called something else. What a great amount of usability packaged into such a small vehicle (relatively speaking).
That's exactly why I love the mobile homes in Europe, very practical, very compact as well. In North America, everything's got to be BIG. And that means, big gas bills, too.
The way Volkswagen has used the space in this California is mind-blowing. Like the table in the door and stuff, very cool! It's a pity that it is so pricy..
No one ever mentions what appears 2B an "Insert" in the sink. I've seen that in another campervan....great when there's only one sink, so you can separate bathroom activities from kitchen activities and avoid cross-contamination if you keep the insert 4 washing dishes, etc then empty it into the other sink.
This is probably the coolest vw product since the gti , i wouldn't buy one but the idea of having a camping rv with such a small package is cool , and if it has a 2.0t motor cant imagine how fast you can make it
That bacon and the egg were clearly cooked elsewhere (perhaps by a 'loved one') and merely reheated in the van, despite you going to the trouble of purchasing more bacon and some eggs to give the impression that the sandwich was made 'in house'. At present I'm unsure if I disprove of this misdirection or not. All I know is I probably would have eaten the sandwich but owing to it's contents would most likely have referred to it as a 'bacon and egg bap'.
frankly forget this VW , you can have a renault traffic (same size than VW ) for 20000 euros and you buy a kit "camping" inside (for 10000 euros ) = you have a good motor home for 30000 euros . and iyou can transform it in a civil van with 7 seats !
i have said 10000 euros to transform your renault traffic in a camp van but it s the max , you can find all the pieces for 5000 euros and you put them yourself it s easy ! imagine a van like the vw for 25000 euros and new ! the renault traffic is solid like a motor home it s the same engine , it s made for the entreprises of transport and professional building homes etc ...
45000 euros!!! ....I wish, ours was 52000 and that was 7000 euros less than it should have been. Yes, hugely expensive, but I can park it in my underground parking and it's no bigger than a large car...and not that large either. It opens up to give 2 double beds....more than many motorhomes....and it can have a toilet in it...but no shower. For a big van, a Globecar Campscout Revolution would be my choice..but everyday I use my Cali I think....how the heck did they fit all this in? But they did!
We have a 2013 Cali and absolutely love it, wouldn't let this muppet anywhere near it though, he's like a bull in a china shop, wonder how many scratches he left in his wake?!
Can you believe how many features Mat showed us in 2 minutes? Amazing. This is one cool vehicle.

now this is what you call a mobile home; perfect for long road trip!
nice camper van
First auto express car review made without driving:)
Loved the review but it was REALLY TOO SHORT
This is awesome! I want one of these in my life. :)
With this I can live anywhere I want to! Gotta have it!

Wish we have campers like this in the States

Og Matt, he has not changed much in 9 years!
That most be the coolest van I've ever seen :o

VW was still producing the old Camper here in Brazil until this year, could this be a good one to be on it's place?
Mat, for a car with so many practicality and features, it must be heavy, how is the fuel consumption?
impressive... 2nd floor sleeping area for a car, I'm beyond impressed.
Matt what about the specs ): ? price? mpg?
How much for that model? what's the mpg ?
Great review Mat!
That video was great.
Awww There you are Matt !
Mat, what happened to Auto Express Vans?
I'M IMPRESSED...
this van literately has everything.
I love that van
This van might have some nice value after 20 years or so.
You'd never expect the VW California to be size that it is to be a camper van especially when you compare it to the bigger Fiat Ducato campervan..
Thanks a lot Mat, now im hungry.
All I can say is wow!
Top gear would love this
Awesome van
Um, so, how does it drive???
How much does it cost in UK?
Why is this VW Camper van not sold in Canada i love to have one
awesome van ;)
swiss army knife of a van
This is sooooo cool
Cool man! Good for a house
I think I saw this car but an older version, it was huge and the person parked bad so it was really tough to come out
Can't believe it a VW i actually like haha
Amazing I want one
But we don't get it in the states,
Matt you are fucking awesome!!!! I hope VW brings this to the US! Hahaha
I NEED IT IN U.S.!!!!!!!!!!!!
the t3 will do till then

But will it blend;)
I want one!!
Hey guys this is Matt Watson from carwow… Wait no I mean auto express
If you want to know the specification of this car, check the review of Transporter, everything is almost exactly the same.
I though our t5 eddition 25 was cool bit that is truly awesome
To be fair, most mobile homes in Europe are about twice as big as the California.
amazing just amazing
I want one.
wish they actually sold this in California!
Ironically they don't sell this in California :(

awesome!!!
Why don't we have this in California?
AWSOME
Very Nice van.. but for this version it's more than 60 000 euros without any options!!
Wtf Mat Watson u used to be on car buyer?
i think carbuyer is part of auto express
this one is a vw t5 calfornia ocean
supercool!
Could've been longer, this review.
Just like a Ferrari California, but with more knee room.
it's a vw there are no surprises, always the same engines. plus u can see mpg everywhere like wikipedia, doesn't seem that hard
the best
I thought he meant you could cook your camera woman!! Cannibal!
What an idiot
I have a California. Wow, that convertible Ferrari? No...Volkswagen...
are you high??
He hot actually
Sweet indeed...:)))
We have a 2013 Cali and absolutely love it, wouldn't let this muppet anywhere near it though, he's like a bull in a china shop, wonder how many scratches he left in his wake?!
awesome car, douche presenter
the California Van they don't sell in California =/
Here we have Gordon Ramsey
how childish spitting the food? did you come up with that idea
Mat is funny.
That's what I call engineering
A bacon butty les Anglais love them, but not cold I guess?
not bad, but I'd rather have the ferrari with the same name :)
crazy designers.
because this VW costs at least 45000 euros ! for this price you have a real motor home really big and confortable ... so avoid this VW california
Leave it to the Germans to make a practical mobile home from a small van.
Great campervan and everything, but really ? "Cook your camera women a sandwich" ?
NoNoNoNO! I don't think so.
miles better and superbly greater dan a big lump of mortorhome
Amazing i like it :) :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
Zombie plan: updated
materials look cheap.
I think of a Ferrari rather than a VW!
this seems like paid comercial
What the hell is this no driving or anything? Incomplete review
You can cook your camerawoman a sandwich. Mmhm something isn't quite right here.
fcukin wow
for the price of a real motor home it s ridiculous this VW ...
Thumbs up for spitting that piece of crap!
they ran out of vans to test
everything looks so cheap and flimsy.
