I can't believe NBC cancelled this wonderul show. With ratings so low on NBC, what are they thinking!!!! This is the best show on NBC....heck it's one of the best shows on TV period!!
Season 1 was 11/10. It was the perfect season. Season 2 was great but not the BEST tv show on TV. Still a shame it was cancelled! This deserves a movie!
Not only does Katharine McPhee have a great voice (many do) but when she sings, you believe what she says. The emotions, the phrasing, the feel--just can't be taught. Katharine McPhee is a star in every sense of the work
The key is to compare the projected emotions in the two versions of this final number. Karen's is accepting (of her death and the peace of it), passive, loving, grateful, and lets a bit of that innocence come to the fore again. Ivy's is defiant (she's dead, but her memory will never die, and she knows it), aggressive, bold, proud, and tells you she ultimately regrets nothing; knowing people will talk, but facing death knowing she earned every bit of her fame. They both go out with a bang, but Karen bursts like a stunning gold firework, and Ivy takes the rest of the world as she knew it with her in an eruption of color. Both performances are fantastic in their own right; it's just comparing apples to oranges.
exactly!! and that's the best way to describe their Marilyns as well and why it was so back-and-forth with the casting. Marilyn embodied boldness and shyness, sexiness and innocence, and it's part of why she is so iconic. Ivy captured the bolder parts of Marilyn's personality to a T, but I found she lacked on the innocence, whereas Karen herself was innocent of that was easy for her to portray, but she was too shy to really have the friskiness of Marilyn. As for the final song, it's all a matter of preference. I find both performances to be absolutely beautiful, but I find that I like Ivy's interpretation better because she isn't just complicit with how she was treated, she is MAD because she was treated like crap and she has the right to be, and she can finally be free from it, whereas when she was alive she didn't seem to have any other option that just to accept she will always be seen as an object. While I love Karen's innocence in other songs, this is one that it just doesn't work as well.
I think people miss the point that Karen and Ivy are different representations of Marilyn and it depends what kind of person you are in who you think better represents her. So it said a lot about the creative team who they saw as Marilyn.
1:07 - 1:11 "but forget every man who I ever met, cuz they only live to control" I love her cold cold expression at that moment, that was amazing.....goosebumps!!! Love her voice!
This song is so awesome it gives me chills! What an excellant show, the music arrangement is the best ever, the cast and crew are totally awesome. Dear Ms. Katherine Mcphee, you prove that you don't need to win American Idol to be a Star you trully shine in Smash!
When you look to the heavens with someone you love, and a lights shining bright from afar, hope you see my face there, and then offer a prayer, and please let me be that star. The perfect way to think of everyone we have lost, including Marilyn herself
So wonderful! As Tom and Julia struggled to find an ending for Bombshell that transcended Marilyn's suicide(?)/death, they forged this compelling song. Katharine McPhee's soul-touching delivery brought tears to my eyes. SMASH season 1 was unforgettable, so many incredible scenes and songs. Come on, NBC. Where's our DVD?
I get chills every time I watch this video. The music writers for this show really outdid themselves and Katharine is just amazing and inspiring..thank you so much I love this song!
I've watched the end of this episode on my local tv station on-line over and over again. Thanks for posting it here. Once again, I've come to admire Ms. Mcphee's talent and the superb job she did on this song. Thanks for posting it.
wonderful job. A friend in NYC used to walk his aunt's dog with "Norma." He never knew she was Marilyn. Thanks for posting this. This song isn't on the cd.
Just wonderful. Such a genius way to end "Bombshell"....I would never have thought of it. Nothing is more masterful to me than the crafting of an amazing song or show. LOVE IT so much.
They thought they could dispose of me They tried to make me small I suffered each indignity But now rise above it all Yes, the price I paid was all I had But at last, I found release And if something good can come from bad The past can rest in peace Oh if you see someone's hurt And in need of a hand Don't forget me Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand You don't forget me When you sing happy birthday to someone you love Or see diamonds you wish were all free Please say that you won't; I pray that you don't forget me But forget every man who I ever met 'Cause they only lived to control For a kiss they paid a thousand Yet they paid fifty cents for my soul They took their piece The price of fame that no one can repay Ah, but they didn't buy me when they bought my name And that is why I pray That when you see someone's hurt And in need of a hand You don't forget me Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand You don't forget me When you sing happy birthday to someone you love Or see diamonds you wish were all free Please say that you won't; I pray that you don't forget me There are some in this world who have strength on their own Never broken or in need of repair But there are some born to shine who can't do it alone So protect them and take special care Take care And don't forget me Please take care And don't forget me When you look to the heavens with someone you love And a light shining bright from afar Hope you see my face there And then offer a prayer And please let me be Let me be that star
I am a big fan of Katherine McPhee. Loved her on idol and have watched her grow to where she is now on Smash. That last note she hit in this song was beyond belief. It was so strong and clear. What a great singer and so posed and beautiful. Bravo!!!
I don't know what it is about this song - I have such a strong emotional reaction to it and well up as soon as she comes into the choruses. Only a couple of songs can do that to me, this one and still by alanis Morisette. Amazing song and an awesome show. can't wait for series 2.
i agree absolutely. Kat deserves to be a superstar and i think she is well on her way. Ever since she appeared on AI i had a strong feeling she would have a great career and would become a big star! So looking forward to the next season of SMASH. Wish it were starting next month instead of waiting until January. Damn NBC--- next seasons are supposed to start in September!!!!!
Katharine McPhee does have an angelic voice and whatever she sings does gives you goosebumps. Thanks again for editing certain parts of the clips. Good job. Her Idol performance which I still liked till today is the signature song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Post Idol would be those she sang duet with Andrea Brocelli and "Somewhere" from David Foster and Friends concert.
Totally agree with what you say on the phrasing & emotions. She has been vocally trained by her mom when she was young. Have you guys noticed Katharine has the softness in her singing voice when she role plays Marilyn. Check back some of her Ameican Idol performance such as Someone To Watch Over Me, Somewhere Over The Rainbow & etcs. :)
i really like how you incorporated the real Marilyn, i loved the show but i think alot of people are getting so caught up in it that they forget the woman who inspired it!

As an actor, I can clearly identify which of these is the more interesting acting choice. I don't think it's hard to know which one I'm talking about.

KM is an amazing singer! love the show.
They thought they could dispose of me
They tried to make me small
I suffered each indignity
But now rise above it all
Yes, the price I paid was all I had
But at last, I found release
And if something good can come from bad
The past can rest in peace
Oh if you see someone's hurt
And in need of a hand
Don't forget me
Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand
You don't forget me
When you sing happy birthday to someone you love
Or see diamonds you wish were all free
Please say that you won't;
I pray that you don't forget me
But forget every man who I ever met
'Cause they only lived to control
For a kiss they paid a thousand
Yet they paid fifty cents for my soul
They took their piece
The price of fame that no one can repay
Ah, but they didn't buy me when they bought my name
And that is why I pray
That when you see someone's hurt
And in need of a hand
You don't forget me
Or hear a melody crying from some baby grand
You don't forget me
When you sing happy birthday to someone you love
Or see diamonds you wish were all free
Please say that you won't;
I pray that you don't forget me
There are some in this world who have strength on their own
Never broken or in need of repair
But there are some born to shine who can't do it alone
So protect them and take special care
Take care
And don't forget me
Please take care
And don't forget me
When you look to the heavens with someone you love
And a light shining bright from afar
Hope you see my face there
And then offer a prayer
And please let me be
Let me be that star
WOW!!! The B E A U T I F U L resemblance! When you look to the heavens... tears

Thanks for creating this, this was really awesome
She's so pretty :)
I much prefer Karen. Megan's too baby-faced and traditionally pretty and I like more interesting women.
WHOO ME ENCANTO.
今も大好きです❤️
man why isnt she a superstar. I know of thousands out there that can never do what she can. what a great way to end the show
I have the beginning as a solo for chorus... sooo excited
i'd love to hear ivy sing it. She has a very powerful voice that is perfect for musical numbers
Captures the parting thoughts of Marilyn perfectly, in my opinion.
