    I like the Oath of Pestilence as an enforcer of humility and equality. Pestilence reaps noble and commoner alike.

      You could also be a Fey-Transformation based Pestilence Paladin, marking the change of bountiful summer, to biting cold of winter.

      Could also be an edgy antihero by having them being an avenging angel of death who unleashes pestilence upon the wicked and oppressive IE the 12 plagues of Egypt.

    You know the Eldritch Domain is such an amazing addition when you remember Warlocks also have a subclass where their patron is a celestial. It's like a total role-swap for those two classes.

    Yes! Been running Grim Hollow for several weeks and the players love its gritty, challenging and Dark themes.
    I have an:
    Eldritch Cleric
    Fractured Barbarian
    Monster Hunter(which recently in his xenophobic hunting looked an Eldritch Being In the eyes.)
    A soman Vampire(rogue, Barbarian)
    A Plagur Doctor Wizard
    And more. Love it all.

      If you play an Ogresh,, abberant-horror Oath of Pestilence you'd basically be Typhus of the Death guard from 40K. Take a few levels in Warlock and even more so.

    I used inspiration from the Oath of Pestilence to explore the idea of prayer not for direct aid but for the mercy of being passed over and spared. The Paladins are those who take it upon themselves to inflict the inevitable plague on those outside of their community. Better them than us.

    I can imagine an Oath of Zeal Paladin with the Werewolf Transformation as being a Downcast of Maligant whose embraced his rage against the Cult of Tormach.

    Good stuff. Absoluting bringing some of these subclasses as options or even as NPCs to other 5e settings as well. I've got a particularly tragic twist waiting for a few friends in Exandria, I think, given how curious they've been about the Wound of Ioun...perhaps some former follower of her knows about it. Knows far, far too much than they themselves wish about it. Eldritch option is too good to pass up.

    Sounds very cool. Currently working on a homebrew project as a tie-in for a comic I'm writing for my cousin. It includes some of the worst classes and subclasses getting buffed, and some brand new subclasses.

    Does the inquisition domain not get a channel divinity?

    • @GhostfireGaming
      @GhostfireGaming  6 месяцев назад +6

      Yes! In the time I have it's hard to mention every subclass feature, but the Inquisition Domain's channel divinity is pretty cool. As a bonus action you provide a shield of temporary hit points to either yourself or an ally within 30ft. While having the temp hit points, a creature has resistance to damage from spells and advantage on saving throws against spells.

    "Because the deities they worship must exist somewhere in your setting. Right?"
    ...Must they? Is that a requirement? It could be interesting to have a paladin or cleric who is just dead freaking wrong about how their 'abilities' work.

    • @origamiknife7556

      In Gygaxian D&D? Yes. The fact that the gods are real and active in the world is a core element of the OG D&D experience. That being said, it's your game do what you want.

    • @GhostfireGaming
      @GhostfireGaming  6 месяцев назад +5

      I actually agree with you, which is why I left it a little uncertain at the end of that paragraph. 😄 While beyond the scope of the discussion of this video, it's very interesting to me where Paladins or Clerics draw their divine magic from. Are they blessed by a deity like a prophet? Is it sheer belief in themselves? Do they believe they're worshipping one deity when in fact it's another? Are the cosmic forces of good or evil simply bending to this persons will, like a gravity well?
      The question is intriguing, and the answer probably unique to every D&D game. But I like to keep it vague, with an acknowledgement that the power must be getting drawn from somewhere.

    • @noahmehringer29
      @noahmehringer29 5 месяцев назад

      the Dungeon Dudes Drakenheim setting kinda take this into perspective where there are no definitive Gods as being confirmed. They're just legends. Paladins and Clerics recieve their magic through sheer force of faith and Zealotry.

    • @LupineShadowOmega
      @LupineShadowOmega 5 месяцев назад

      In 5e, no. Paladins gain power from their oath and Clerics can also be the cleric of a concept or idea. Nothing says that you aren't just a crazy person that is magic through faith exclusively.

    • @epigreviews5405
      @epigreviews5405 5 месяцев назад

      I love this line of thinking. Not all clerics draw their power in the same way. Some from sheer faith others from serving the divine as their holy/unholy champions. Also along with that idea I reckon the cleric class is a better representation of a cultists than a warlock depending on the flavor. A deal with the devil could be made out of necessity rather than power and greed but faith and worship of the dark arts is just plain blasphemy.

    Realistically, any big church in a grimdark setting would end up looking like the Church of Avacyn in Innistrad. When the three neighboring nations are run by vampires and the dark forest nation is populated by nothing but werewolves, the lone human nation in the middle of the map is going to gravitate towards worshiping any other worldly being that hunts and kill the monsters that eat/infect humans.
    Though the church itself is strongly themed to favor Inquisition clerics and zeal paladins, the zeal paladin is more of a reflection of what the church and Avacyn became right before her death. With all Avacyn's fellow angels infected by the madness and tentacles of the elder god Emrakul.
