Hello, I know this is an old video, but I am considering one of these little Launches. Curious though, the vehicles that you were able to get into in the video all had manual or CVT transmissions - have you looked into the bi-directional controls for automatics? If so, can this little thing handle shift and TCC solenoid activation for diagnostic purposes? Thank you!!! This was a fantastic walk through of the tool.
That's a nice wrap up Ivan. I can't believe something so small can do all of that. You and Keith should do some in depth scan tool comparisons because there are so many units out there and you don't want to blow your cash on something lacking. Between the two of you guys I reckon you could come up with a good catalogue of scan tool reviews that would be the go to list......great vid mate. 😉
I was told that there is a fair amount of code crossover between the Chinese manufacturers. There are no hard and fast rules but in general coverage will be weak on cars older than about 5 years before the tool came out. That's why snap on is so good on the old cars. I keep a classic 'brick' for engine diagnostics on the 90s BMWs no other tool will show oxygen sensor data for me on the pre obd cars.
I would love for you to do a unboxing and indepth look at the snap on Verus , what you get and how to go though the menu's and how to hook things up , like basic go over of all the basic's of the verus and different versions. what to look out for if you go to buy one . Have you seen the new snap on ?
Does the tool have a vin bar code scan with camera also , on my Maximus 3,0 older vehicles that capability is so so . But also presents manual input so you can just type in the vehicle . Found on older fords, that ids does have the power balance on , the launch has trouble with , but does work on newer models very well . But curious if a manual entry present might of gave you access to the 92 GM . If available on that tool .Great video Ivan .
I know this video is dated....does this have the TPMS function to read sensors at the wheels and and ability to program new ones? I work with Subaru's and they are TPMS complicated beasts.
Nice review Ivan Eric O of SMA has multiple scanners. Bosch is his new go to not Snapon. 1. Snap on has the scope and is a pro level tool with awesome backend support!!! Yes the update is $1,000 but that’s what $100 per month or 1 hour of labor. That is cheap from my perspective. My snap on D10 has served me well. Got it used off eBay less than 2k with 18.2. Snap on is loaded with things like component testing. That costs money. It my go to scanner. 2. Autel is nice but I personally would not invest in it. My opinion. 3. Launch. It is a great too at $700. It provides a great deal of features for the price. My view figure out what you want to do first. Am I doing what Ivan doing? Am I just my own DIY. Is my hobby or is this going to be a business for me. Then by the tool you need. Last there is going to be a big change in how we work, soon. It is going to be OEM software PC based or 3rd party PC based software with OEM authentication to have by directional options. The cheap unauthorized scanners are done.... The Pico scope is PC based right? Remember how am I going to use the tool. It will age out in time. Then spend your money wisely. Money is so easy to spend and hard to earn. Right Ivan?
Autel and Launch already have the authentication software work around in a newer update. So that isn't going to be an issue. Snap-On is WAY overpriced and doesn't do many of the things the Autel and Launch can do. The only issues I've seen with the Bosch is in the data pids, just like the rest of the OTC/Bosch tools, they don't let you select the ones you want if you go into specific tests.
I agree with you I bought a used like new snap on edge 18.4 for 3k that’s good price for me. I have the Autel Elite with two free years and a pico. I was gonna get the launch 431+ anyone that says snap on is over priced never looked on eBay. Edge on there right now 18.2 for 3k most people who don’t like snap on are DIYers that don’t want to spend the Money so they talk crap. Just like welding and everlast it’s all the same. The back end stuff like Mitchell, pin outs, built in scope, shop steam all valuable but the DIYers would never know.
i got mine a month ago and it works well . except last week 2001 civic with running problem no check engine light scanned for codes launch said no codes . hooked up my autel 906 and it displayed miss fire codes . same thing with 2006 altima it will not display past codes
Re Disconning the airbag. I kind of agree given the type of roads you drive on, an unintentional deployment is far more likely to happen. However for normal highway and city driving the probability of injury from shrapnel is way smaller than the benifit it will give in a major crash.
I think a lot of the issues in the smaller units may have to do with the wireless link. Although it is a nice option 90% of the time, the direct cable is almost always faster. There have also been a few "rumors" that for some vehicle access and connection options, the wireless doesn't work, but if you connect it up, it does.
Thanks for an excellent test. Is it practical or possible to install and use an under-dash switch to cut off the ABS function in situations where you know it does not function well, such as stopping from 5 mph in ice and snow as you described, and the ”free wheeling” down icy mountain roads that the viewer from West Virginia described?
@@stephenlutz123 The first time i would update everything the unit ask for. Could be a newer android vers. also. I always update scanners, phones and computers. An update usually makes thing work faster and safer.
Hi Ivan, nice review, I have the Launch x431 V+ and the Verus, I find the launch more useful than the snap on, and value for money with its free updates the Launch is a lot better than snap on. It is cheaper to buy a new Launch when my free updates have expired rather than pay to update the verus, also did you mention the coding capabilities of the Launch? I sell and repair used cars,in the UK, and as an example I have just programmed a brand new key into a VW Polo using the Launch, something which my Verus won't get near. I have now also brought a 2 channel Pico, making the verus my very second choice now. Granted I only sell newer European cars so diagnosing a 1992 Oldsmobile wont bother me!
Great shootout, Ivan! That Launch is pretty sweet - love the compact size . The only tool I could get to work on the '86 Grand Marquis is my old AutoXray AX7000 that I haven't taken out of the box for 2 years now (I'd better check the batteries - bet they let the blue crusties out ...). Very basic tool - no bi-directional control, and it cuts off at 2006, lol. I think you should give the Autel Maxisys a try - mine (MS906TS) does pretty good on Fords. It's extremely slow on Nissan (and one other brand that I can't recall) - and I mean EXTREMELY. Everything else it's been good on. Seems the fastest on GM. Lots of capability in that one. Rarely do I run into something it can't do. Since I skipped an update, it seems to be flaking out on me lately, though. Half the cost of the tool for an update is a real bummer ... but any way you slice it, it's still THOUSANDS cheaper than the Verus. I'm with you on ABS! Hate the crap! Cars feel more dangerous to me WITH ABS. I have proven, on my own road in the snow, that I can stop a vehicle sooner using my foot, with NO electronic help. Our '93 Volvo 940 actually has it (and airbags), but the system in that seems to work better than any vehicle I've driven, so I left it. My wife drives it more than I do anyway. On the Silverado, everything is tied together via comm lines, so no disabling that one without the dashboard Christmas tree light show, LOL.
I am with you on the air bags, Had a friend whom hit a car with minor body damage but set of the air bag she was injured by the air bag. It blew her back brusing both are and her chest. She had more injuries from the aie bag than she would have with out the sir bag.
I have the new autel mp808, the diagon v, and the verus 1st generation, and the verdict so far they all are my go to. I also have a gm tech 2 and a modis eetms300 I'm not to sure on those yet I have yet to use them. I got the autel and the diagon v after seeing your videos and danners and Keith so far love the video and the tools. They been awesome and I made some money with them to.
hey ivan...good job on the video. I really wish I had found this vid. before I bought the Bosch. cause it is really a nitemare to navigate with. I think I will keep it any way. My family wants me to stop fixing cars and I wonder what they will say when I order the launch. I think they should give a free class on operating it so it would be easier getting started . I am 77 years old and I'm still working on cars. No rocking chair for me. I just wanna say God bless guys like you that give so of yourself. Choctawman
Aww I feel kind of sad for the AUTEL...thank you for this review Ivan! I love the fact it brings a dongle with no cables. At 0:52 what does that "Common" brand selection chart is for? It also Includes Suzuki... is it for regular OBD2 and not for EOBD? Is it true you get free updates with this tool? Because the Autel Updates price for the MaxiSYS Elite cost a Kidney!
@@weldingjunkie Sorry but I have to disagree with you, it is not garbage, I had it for years and I see that still does amazing things in european cars by just watching Ivan using it, I own the MaxiSYS Elite that comes with the J2534 right know and is a state of the art tool.
Argeny Sandoval understandable I had the 708 it was my first scanner it’s good for older cars it’s obsolete in general. I also have the Autel Elite with j2 box as well and the Elite has 10x the functions. I also have a Snap On Edge 18.4 and a pico 4425 I guess my point is you need all of them but I wouldn’t run out and buy a used 708... you telling me you would?
The stopping distance on wet, snow, ice is amazingly better with ABS. The difference between collision and not, but if an expensive ABS repair I can understand, but disco a good system is bad decision IMO. Airbag too with no history of bad bags. I had an old girlfriend with bad bags once, had to disco...
I have lived in wet snow and ice all my life. I believe in snow tires and intimately knowing the characteristics of your vehicle in extreme conditions, including practicing maneuvers in a safe environment. The one particular case where ABS fails miserably is coming to a full stop from 5mph in the snow...just keeps chattering until your vehicle is in the middle of the intersection haha
@Todd Orton was it $100 or so less? Saw one on line, $520 + $46 to ship from China. Amazon, free shipping $639. Worth the extra to me to go with Amazon. Looks really great for a shop or DIYer (like me).
great video, it all ways good to get a bit of an idea what different diagnostic computers can do .... because we all know that sometimes manufactures can over inflate there product to get you to buy it ..... my self i have a snap on solus pro and an autel masisys elite which i find can do quite a bit of the work i see with no problems .... would be great to see a head to head on scopes currently have a advantage pro and the autel scope , would like to have a pico a bit pricey for a decent set such as a 4425 complete around $3000 and $6000 for a master set . what are your thoughts
The latest update on the Autel scope isn't that bad. The Pico will still eat it (and most others) for lunch though. The biggest thing with the SO is having the scope built into the hardware. No extra laptop needed. However if you want to watch a live data stream while using the 4 channels on the scope it really isn't fun. If Pico decides to build an all in one to eliminate the need for the extra hardware and cabling, I think they would sell them a lot better.
@@Blazer02LS thanks for your imput .... i havent used the autel 408 scope alot but what i have seen it does lack in the quility that the pico as well as the ease of use in fine detail nano second scales. .... i will be looking a little bit more to its capability as a scope the more i have times i get to use it
Nice review but you are not comparing apples to apples regarding the Launch and Autel scanner. The Autel scanner you have is old. Now if you bought a new Autel and compared that one to New Launch scanner, then you have a fair comparison. Sorry I just had to say that.
The maxisys has the J2534 pass-through device for flashing the cars computer. You can't flash the EEPROM without it and its at least a 500 dollar device and doesn't even include the computer or factory subscriptions needed for the car. Just thought that should be clarified why the autel costs significantly more. My friend has one for his car... if you wan't to program the cars parameters you NEED that device. A lot of people do it because the the factory tune favors emissions but they want better fuel economy and power. Much like the VW scandal. I am in the market for scan tools and i really liked the review!
I just 3 days ago communicated with a 1995 obd1. It will do it but its brutally brutally slow. We're talking 7-10 min slow...but it did it. 97 Chevy truck obd2 no SRS no vin read(manually input). You need to keep going in this one...:-)
Hi Ivan i have the x431 V and i used it for 92 mitsubishi mighty max and it worked just fine, read codes, live data and clear codes. But for a reazon a couldn't get anything for 2107 Toyota Yaris ia, and i even tried to do it on Mazda since this Toyota is all Mazda
The real question is will it work on 2015-2019 vehicles with all the cross traffic alert systems and programming key FOBs on the newer vehicles. My oldest vehicle is a 2004 so all the OBD I stuff I really could care less about.
@@kingbolen_official what about all the rest of the newer systems? Like driver alert module testing, parking sensor testing. Radar function testing. I buy new salavge vehicles, fix them and flip them. So I need something that works on new cars not old cars.

Your SO dealer must be a nice guy. SO here doesn't have a limit on repair costs and updates are ridiculous priced. As for the warranty, the two places most use to buy the launch non-US tools seem to be standing behind them. With a 3 year warranty I wouldn't even blink if a 600.00 unit died after 3 years, when the cost of a new replacement unit is still less than most tools single year updates.
I agree with you. There are going to be an interesting events to come with automotive scanners for cars. They will be PC based software driven scanners. It could come to a point where your authorized scanner might need to contact the OEM to allow you to scan a vehicle. Try to get a security key. If you are not a Locksmith or a VSP. Good luck.

If so, can this little thing handle shift and TCC solenoid activation for diagnostic purposes? Thank you!!! This was a fantastic walk through of the tool.
Does the Launch X431 V + full size system have any clear advantages over this hand held model? Thanks for the review
I'm wondering the same. Hopefully someone can help.
Diagun IV $607
V+ $1050
No big difference if you don't do heavy truck diagnosis
Kingbolen Auto Scanner Center what do you call “heavy truck”? Like will this do a Chevy Silverado 1500? Dodge 1500 or Ford F-150?
@@EATSLEEPFARM yes
@@EATSLEEPFARM heavy truck usually means diesel stuff
I would love for you to do a unboxing and indepth look at the snap on Verus , what you get and how to go though the menu's and how to hook things up , like basic go over of all the basic's
of the verus and different versions. what to look out for if you go to buy one . Have you seen the new snap on ?
Is there a scan tool “resource group” that has comparisons/notes/concerns on the various popular scan tools (Autels, Launch, OTC)?
Great question, David. I'm not sure. Maybe Keith from New Level Auto would know?
Does the tool have a vin bar code scan with camera also , on my Maximus 3,0 older vehicles that capability is so so . But also presents manual input so you can just type in the vehicle . Found on older fords, that ids does have the power balance on , the launch has trouble with , but does work on newer models very well . But curious if a manual entry present might of gave you access to the 92 GM . If available on that tool .Great video Ivan .
Thanks, Doug!
I know this video is dated....does this have the TPMS function to read sensors at the wheels and and ability to program new ones? I work with Subaru's and they are TPMS complicated beasts.
Hey Ivan just saw this awesome scanner review and I am in the market for one does the launch do tpms cloning as easy as the autel scan tool?
Nice review Ivan
Eric O of SMA has multiple scanners.
Right Ivan?
FCA's introduction of the Secure Gateway proves your point. The OEM's are trying to freeze out all non factory tools.
Chrysler actually 18/19/20 years need a 14+8 adapter to do bi lateral and it’s behind the radio can’t wait to see the home owner figure that out
I'm a full time student at a college, I never had a scan tool before so I'm looking to spend my money wisely on one what do you recommend. Thanks
That GM adapter was used in other countries till around 2002. That is why it is included. Autel includes it too.
i got mine a month ago and it works well . except last week 2001 civic with running problem no check engine light scanned for codes launch said no codes . hooked up my autel 906 and it displayed miss fire codes . same thing with 2006 altima it will not display past codes
Just ordered mine!!!
Interesting stuff Ivan, one thing that might be of interest is that I have an Encore and it will read my 1990 K1500 Chevy.
Re Disconning the airbag. I kind of agree given the type of roads you drive on, an unintentional deployment is far more likely to happen. However for normal highway and city driving the probability of injury from shrapnel is way smaller than the benifit it will give in a major crash.
Nice comparo Ivan - good info!
I think a lot of the issues in the smaller units may have to do with the wireless link. Although it is a nice option 90% of the time, the direct cable is almost always faster. There have also been a few "rumors" that for some vehicle access and connection options, the wireless doesn't work, but if you connect it up, it does.
Interesting...
Thank you for your time. big thumbs up
Ivan, I know this video is couple of years old but have you tried using any of the newer Launch items and if you did, are they worth the price?
Hello. Watching your Launch test. You must upgrade the sofware on the unit before use. There was a lot of them when you started.
Reg. Bamsen.
Do you have to update them all, or can you select only the ones you need?
@@stephenlutz123 The first time i would update everything the unit ask for. Could be a newer android vers. also. I always update scanners, phones and computers. An update usually makes thing work faster and safer.
On my 98 contour, with the airbag system, I think it changed from yours. The autel i can access and do stuff with the airbag system.
Great video Ivan that Autel is so old tho lol next video “how to disable air bags” 😂
What model Autel tool are you comparing to?
I see that your Launch shows updates available. Wondering if test results would be different after updating?
it would be work more fast
Those sillouhettes are fast thx Ivan
Especially running on all 6 cylinders haha
Yeah I don't trust explosive devices it front of my face, especially on the older cars!
Is it a full bi directional control scan tool ? If it's not can you recommend a full bi-directional scan tool scan tool for me
It is a little unfair to compare Autel DS708, where there is new one on the market - DS808.
Pawel Zubrzak agreee
I was about to type the same thing. That 708 isn't even from this era. That's an ancient tool.
Is there any subscription costs associated with the Launch? Does it come fully capable for all makes shown?
It works well on popular cars,No subscription costs 2 years free update.
Choctawman
Would you recommend the Launch Pro or the Autel 808? Thanks
Argeny Sandoval that Autel is garbage it’s old. The new elite runs circles around the 708. The Elite gets two years free
@@weldingjunkie You totally right mate! I would not buy one neither used or new.
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I live in WV and while going down a mountain with ice and snow the ABS will let your vehicle free wheel. Not good.
And the other 99.5% of the time? And other drivers?
@@JS-qw8hy And when somebody pulls out in front of you and you need a panic stop? ABS to the rescue. I wouldn't disable ABS.
I need a scanner that works VERY well with older and newer Mercedes-Benz models. Which one do you recommend please?
Is there a "tool only" option? I would never need OBD1 capability.
@Todd Orton was it $100 or so less? Saw one on line, $520 + $46 to ship from China. Amazon, free shipping $639. Worth the extra to me to go with Amazon. Looks really great for a shop or DIYer (like me).
Nice test Ivan. Like most technology price eventually comes down and the features get better. I hear the launch can play porn on it. 😜
Or at least play Minecraft.
Omg lol
How much is the update and if I don't get the update will the scanner keep working?
Yup it will keep working :)
Ivan, does the Launch display Nissan CVT fluid temp? You need it to properly check fluid level. Thanks. 😀
Wrench Spinner yes temp, snap on does fluid when to change.
Great info Ivan. Thanks!
What's the difference between Launch X431 Pro mini & X431 DiagnulV? I am a little confused
Now you make me want one
great video, it all ways good to get a bit of an idea what different diagnostic computers can do .... because we all know that sometimes manufactures can over inflate there product to get you to buy it ..... my self i have a snap on solus pro and an autel masisys elite which i find can do quite a bit of the work i see with no problems .... would be great to see a head to head on scopes currently have a advantage pro and the autel scope , would like to have a pico a bit pricey for a decent set such as a 4425 complete around $3000 and $6000 for a master set . what are your thoughts
I agree. Should have compared the Diagun with a MaxiSys instead of a DS708.
Good video, Ivan!
Are updates mandatory after 2 years or do I just need to update when necessary. 400 bucks for update is a bit pricey for the do it yourselfer.
You do not have to update, the tool keeps working without updates.
@@juergenscholl2843 thanx!
You need to keep going in this one...:-)
haha I'll just let the Snap-On work its magic on the older cars :)
Do you still use the old Autel, or is it now assigned to gathering dust ?
what's the difference between MaxiCOM MK808 and the MaxiCheck MX808?
Hi Ivan i have the x431 V and i used it for 92 mitsubishi mighty max and it worked just fine, read codes, live data and clear codes. But for a reazon a couldn't get anything for 2107 Toyota Yaris ia, and i even tried to do it on Mazda since this Toyota is all Mazda
Brozer is this unit better then autel ts or not.. Will this re program 🔑and fobs.
Ivan , Don't you think it's time to get a new truck?
The real question is will it work on 2015-2019 vehicles with all the cross traffic alert systems and programming key FOBs on the newer vehicles. My oldest vehicle is a 2004 so all the OBD I stuff I really could care less about.
Launch X431 Diagun IV can do programming key FOBs on the newer vehicles but need pin codes.
@@kingbolen_official what about all the rest of the newer systems? Like driver alert module testing, parking sensor testing. Radar function testing. I buy new salavge vehicles, fix them and flip them. So I need something that works on new cars not old cars.

good work in explaining different modules
Your help would be highly appreciated if you can help out before i buy a module

what is the best module and add on"s that would best work with my car and purposes
help a brother out

Nice comparison.
Thankyou Ivan
Eric O also mention Launch USA vs non USA. Make sure you can get it warranted if it breaks.
Snapon is $800 max to fix if I ooops it.
Good luck.
Can I turn off ABS with a Launch?
You can clear it yes
Does it work with diesel trucks duramax ect.
