Hello ladies! Great work. 🙋🏻♀️😁 Also your history items. Some interesting information - *The clay pipe. It was popular in the day. Women use and smoked clay pipes. The islanders (Ireland has a lot of islands) women’s hobby as relaxation from the trudge of daily harsh domestic life. Men used clay pipes too of course. *Great find with the milk returns. Creameries were in situ and developed into co-ops thereafter in Irelands Independence. Sadly those creameries disappeared one by one 70’s early 80’’s. Some have been preserved as community centres or else the stones used for building walls around property or buildings and so on. The coin you found - yes quite correct it was a tradition to place a coin in the wall just as when you are giving a gift of a purse or wallet a coin is placed there for good luck. *The year or period of the coin is very significant. That period as in 1840-1850 relates to a very painful period in Irelands history and still resonates with us today. Known as An Gorta Mór - the Great Hunger. This relates to the Great Famine in Ireland during that period of 10 years the worse occurring 5-7 years of that period (1845 to 1852) in which Irish people (men, women, children, babies) starved to death due to their dependency on the potato crop that blight attacked. The potato was the Irish main staple diet. As you are aware land was taken from the Irish and they lived in small stone houses or hovels in the poorest part of the land. They worked for absentee landlords in England and paid rent on such properties. Rents on such properties were raised during this time. When the Famine occurred they could not feed themselves or pay the rent. They were evicted. Land then was converted to grassland land for cattle by the landlords. In many cases the roofs on their homesteads thatch were burned or hovels roofs (sods of grass) destroyed to ensure the evicted families did not re occupy the house. During that period it is estimated a minimum of one million people died of starvation in Ireland. Many other millions emigrated and many thousands also died on their journey by ships (known as coffin ships) to America. However another painful factor was that other food grown, produced and harvested in Ireland grain and the like along with livestock was not distributed to the starving Irish but exported and destined for consumption to England. The highest exports of this Irish produce occurred during that Irish Famine period to England. There were several hundred of food depots around Ireland protecting by the British troops at the time so the stocks could not be raided by the Irish and tenant’s. During that century prior to the Famine the island of Ireland population was close to above nine million. By the latter part of the century going into the early 20th century the population reflected under 5 million. It essentially as a comparison if the population of Scotland reduced by one third. The decimation of the Irish Potato Famine had a major impact on Ireland from and since that time. Ireland is still revealing its history as mass graves were found along with other unmarked graves in cemeteries over the years and this process is still ongoing. There are commemorative locations and other historical aspects that visitors can look further into on tours and education about this heartbreaking period. I know you both like your history and fact finding and the above provided is a very brief outline if which you may not have been aware of. There are many noteworthy books if you are interested in finding out more about it. A thought - Ireland had its own currency thereafter once administration handover occurred. The Irish currency also included an Irish penny (pingin) - it had a hen and her chicks on one side with the Irish Harp on the other side you might yet find one there in the walk or house! Of course through the decades the currency changed after decimalisation, then to the punt (Irish pound) and then over the last couple of decades to the euro. It might be nice to place a euro and /or old Irish penny into your new abode?

Maybe you should put in a new penny in the walls while you're plastering. You can never have enough luck... Also, I know you said you are dirty and dusty all the time, but I just watch you on the videos, in your clean white t-shirts, all way, every day. Even in the video where you were helping the Irish Homestead with the concrete floor, everyone was in dark clothes, dirty head to toes, and you, as always, in your clean white t-shirt. I don't know how you do it. And that belt for tools looks good. And it's a must have for what you do on the cottage! I love watching the two of you and the cottage transformation. I wish you the best with the renovation, it was not easy so far.

Lime work looking v good. Make sure there are no hairline cracks between lime and stones when you knock back with the brush and leave it to dry - I saw a couple and they only get bigger as it dries - which compromises strength and can lead to bigger cracks over time ; when you knock back, rub the edges with your thumb to make sure it is tightly stuck. Also you can use the bigger trowel to get the stuff on and then use the narrow one for the edges, much quicker progress them. Hessian can be used to cover the work and let it dry very slowly once you are done. 💐👍👍👍👍

Lou if you want white pointing use golden sand, it will look beige but when it dries overnight it will turn white. I watch a channel called The Indie Projects and they converted an old stone barn in Portugal and used lime to plaster and made a feature wall with pointing, it was their off grid property i hope this helps you as they cover a slightly different technique for pointing the walls, still using the pointing keys but they use a different brush to finish it off hope this helps x

We live remotely in the south of Ireland and bought a cottage and land which was 80% liveable 5 years on we still doing it there will be something to do all the time 👍 Great video

Hi Lousie Loved this video, i found it really interesting, especially with regards the lime mix, you did a good job on your practise wall too, it looked great . Re your black penny, i have my great great great gran ma's , just use a soft cloth , the imprints of Queen Victoria will be faint, thats poss this coin like mine was special and who every own it use to hold the coin in their hands and smoothness is from where they turn it in the hand , dont use any chemicals , that black penny is special just hold it in your hand use your fingers as the oils from your skin will keep it smooth. Oh and you did a brill job helping yr neighbours as i watched that video too. Emily looked so excited to be back from her work. And proud of what you achieved 😊
I used lime mix years ago for brick work and stone Flintstones walls. You need a loomy sand and not too Sharp,mix a 4to 1 mix the day before and then refresh before use, you will find the pointing much better, but good luck I was a builder for 57 year and now a sad old get getting a lot of fun seeing you build your dream house.😅
I lived in a small village here in Canada where my family owned a saw mill. The village decide to print a history of the town in the 1970's and one of the stories was about someone in the 1880's who had gone to the lime kilns about 4 miles outside of town to get a wagon full of lime. Just as they started back home a fierce rainstorm started and by the time they returned back to the village all that was left of the load was the wheels of the wagon and the much diminished frame of the wagon. The lime and the box of the wagon had dissolved on the way home. Hot lime is not to be mishandled. Love the videos. Thank you.

Truly amazing work and excellent explanation of what you are doing at each stage. My brother converted an old cottage that had been turned into stables back into a cottage so know the hard work involved. Unfortunately he passed away before getting to move in ( electric was connected week after he died). His cottage will be going up for sale soon my parents finally able to part with it after 25 years.

Many other millions emigrated and many thousands also died on their journey by ships (known as coffin ships) to America. However another painful factor was that other food grown, produced and harvested in Ireland grain and the like along with livestock was not distributed to the starving Irish but exported and destined for consumption to England. The highest exports of this Irish produce occurred during that Irish Famine period to England. There were several hundred of food depots around Ireland protecting by the British troops at the time so the stocks could not be raided by the Irish and tenant’s. During that century prior to the Famine the island of Ireland population was close to above nine million. By the latter part of the century going into the early 20th century the population reflected under 5 million. It essentially as a comparison if the population of Scotland reduced by one third. The decimation of the Irish Potato Famine had a major impact on Ireland from and since that time.
Ireland is still revealing its history as mass graves were found along with other unmarked graves in cemeteries over the years and this process is still ongoing. There are commemorative locations and other historical aspects that visitors can look further into on tours and education about this heartbreaking period.
I know you both like your history and fact finding and the above provided is a very brief outline if which you may not have been aware of. There are many noteworthy books if you are interested in finding out more about it.
A thought - Ireland had its own currency thereafter once administration handover occurred. The Irish currency also included an Irish penny (pingin) - it had a hen and her chicks on one side with the Irish Harp on the other side you might yet find one there in the walk or house! Of course through the decades the currency changed after decimalisation, then to the punt (Irish pound) and then over the last couple of decades to the euro. It might be nice to place a euro and /or old Irish penny into your new abode?

Maybe you should put in a new penny in the walls while you're plastering. You can never have enough luck... Also, I know you said you are dirty and dusty all the time, but I just watch you on the videos, in your clean white t-shirts, all way, every day. Even in the video where you were helping the Irish Homestead with the concrete floor, everyone was in dark clothes, dirty head to toes, and you, as always, in your clean white t-shirt. I don't know how you do it. And that belt for tools looks good. And it's a must have for what you do on the cottage! I love watching the two of you and the cottage transformation. I wish you the best with the renovation, it was not easy so far.

Lime work looking v good. Make sure there are no hairline cracks between lime and stones when you knock back with the brush and leave it to dry - I saw a couple and they only get bigger as it dries - which compromises strength and can lead to bigger cracks over time ; when you knock back, rub the edges with your thumb to make sure it is tightly stuck. Also you can use the bigger trowel to get the stuff on and then use the narrow one for the edges, much quicker progress them. Hessian can be used to cover the work and let it dry very slowly once you are done. 💐👍👍👍👍

Lou if you want white pointing use golden sand, it will look beige but when it dries overnight it will turn white. I watch a channel called The Indie Projects and they converted an old stone barn in Portugal and used lime to plaster and made a feature wall with pointing, it was their off grid property i hope this helps you as they cover a slightly different technique for pointing the walls, still using the pointing keys but they use a different brush to finish it off hope this helps x

We live remotely in the south of Ireland and bought a cottage and land which was 80% liveable 5 years on we still doing it there will be something to do all the time 👍

Re your black penny, i have my great great great gran ma's , just use a soft cloth , the imprints of Queen Victoria will be faint, thats poss this coin like mine was special and who every own it use to hold the coin in their hands and smoothness is from where they turn it in the hand , dont use any chemicals , that black penny is special just hold it in your hand use your fingers as the oils from your skin will keep it smooth.
Oh and you did a brill job helping yr neighbours as i watched that video too.

I used lime mix years ago for brick work and stone Flintstones walls. You need a loomy sand and not too Sharp,mix a 4to 1 mix the day before and then refresh before use, you will find the pointing much better, but good luck I was a builder for 57 year and now a sad old get getting a lot of fun seeing you build your dream house.😅

I lived in a small village here in Canada where my family owned a saw mill. The village decide to print a history of the town in the 1970's and one of the stories was about someone in the 1880's who had gone to the lime kilns about 4 miles outside of town to get a wagon full of lime. Just as they started back home a fierce rainstorm started and by the time they returned back to the village all that was left of the load was the wheels of the wagon and the much diminished frame of the wagon. The lime and the box of the wagon had dissolved on the way home. Hot lime is not to be mishandled. Love the videos. Thank you.

Truly amazing work and excellent explanation of what you are doing at each stage. My brother converted an old cottage that had been turned into stables back into a cottage so know the hard work involved. Unfortunately he passed away before getting to move in ( electric was connected week after he died). His cottage will be going up for sale soon my parents finally able to part with it after 25 years.
