This just shows how intense the sinking was, when the torpedo struck most people were inside. Everyone was running through the halls, hitting eachother and falling. When the power went out the whole ship was pitch black inside. The people in the halls were now just lost and couldn't see anything. People in the elevators were stuck. No one in the elevators survived at all. Lifeboats mostly capsized and didn't manage to get away from the ship. People who were taking a walk outside before the explosion were lucky.

It was actually over two hours after the ship went down that the rescue vessels arrived since no one wanted to go to an area with an active u-boat so most people died by the time they arrived and thanks to the 20° list and speed of the ship most lifeboats either could not be launched or sank due to improper lowering so only 6 out of the 48 were launched successfully and all from the starboard side as the port lifeboats would hit the ship if attempted to be lowered

Not as much as you would think. Lusitania had a 20 meters tall before the antifouling line, and then 24 after that. So 44 meters for the entire bottom hull. Half of that was underwater. On a modern cruiseship, there is about 13-11 meters under the antifouling line. A cruise-ship sustains on being a shallow water liner, whereas an oceanliner verges on being low-in since it is in deep water and needs more room for supply without being top heavy.

Yeah, when ships list to one side, the boats on the 'uphill' side become unusable because they get caught on the side of the ship, assuming it's not hovering directly above the deck itself in extreme cases. The 'downhill' side has it's own issues, what with people now needing to make a 3+ foot jump, but at least the boat can be launched.
If you're interested, Erik Larson's book "Dead Wake" is an excellent account of Lusitania's final voyage, especially the sinking.

Also, the next time you play a ship game, if you didn’t know, when a ship lists over far enough, the lifeboats/davits on the high side are not able to be launched because they scrape the side of the ship, whereas the boats on the lower side are accessible. It really comes in handy when you need to move quickly.

Secondary was the ammunition blowing up. Also the smoke stacks blast out because captain told them to let off all steam so the boilers didn’t explode.
Unlike the titanic which went down 12.5k feet deep. This ship only fell 300ft in depth. Also the rear never went vertical on Lusitania. It only went up, leveled off and dropped down
Only 6 life boats in total made it to save people

    • @thejagotishow
      @thejagotishow 2 года назад

U-20 was the U-boat which sunk the ship. That morning due to fog Lusitania had to slow down normally she could outrun a U-Boat. She was looking for old head of Kinsale so she could turn south along the Irish coast. She happened to pass right in front of U-20 which had been watching her and was about to leave because the Lusitania was speeding up with the fog gone. The secondary explosion was from the small arms ammunition the Lusitania. She sunk fast because her steam pressure dropped she could not close her doors and her stearing was broken. Also Lifeboats could not be launch because they also couldn't slow down fast enough.

I know no one is going to see this but lusitania was stuck on starboard side. 30 seconds later another explosion can be heard from the cargo holds of the ship because lusitania was carrying munitions. The ship almost instantly began to list at 10° on starboard. The ship sank in only 18 minutes bringing 1196 lives with it, with coast guard ships only coming after 4 hours. Some stores when the ship sank are gruesome like when an officer was telling people that they couldn't lower lifeboat number 2 when the release pin was hit. The lifeboat swung inward crushing around 50 people to death. Another lifeboats release pin was hit killing another 50 before sliding down down the deck, dragging the gruesome array of dead and injured people down the deck before getting caught on the bridge wing. Another story consists of a man jumping off the stern of the ship when he hit the propeller and sawed off his leg.

Olympic class liners used 2 reciprocating engines and a low pressure turbine (3 screws).
Lusitania class used 4 high pressure turbines connected to 4 screws. So it's obvius they needed more boilers and so 4 funnels.
However on Olympic class liners, the 4th funnel was not fake. It was used for ventilation of the kitchen and ventilation of boiler rooms.
Now as we all know, Lusitania class liners where more focused on speed. They easily did 25 knots averge crossing. Mauretania record crossing had an averge speed of 26.5 knots. However Olympic class liners while slower than the 2 speedemons where really fast, especially considering their massive size. Olympic class liners where capable of 22+ knots averge speed crossing. Olympic even reached 24 knots on a single day run. They where fast giants.

This event enraged the U.S, but the Lusitania sank in 1915 and American troops first set foot on the western front in 1918. So it wasn't as pivotal an event as school textbooks like to make out. The Zimmerman telegram was the defining moment in the U.S entering the war.

Jesus, that's terrifying. There were lots of people trapped in the ship when it went down, and it took something like three hours for rescue to come to the lifeboats. The rescuers didn't want to rush into an area with U Boats, lol. Otherwise they might get sunk, too.

It's customary to go to full stop, or coast (depending on situation, ie. if possible to stop) to slow the intake of water (the faster, the more water being pushed into opening)

I’m from cork (Ireland) and I’m near where it happened. It went down in 20 minutes only 11 miles from the coast and led to the death of 1250 people of the 1900 passengers (who were all civilians) only 6 of the 48 life boats were launched. It’s really sad and was totally unprovoked. Although it did have ammunition on board it was a cruise liner as well. There you go. A quick history lesson

Actually the Lusitinia sunk in 18 minutes plus it was a auxliry ship so it serve multiple purpose the time of the sinking it was carry tons of artillery shells without the fuses and tons of small calibur rounds for small arms plus it was carry suspecious cargo that was highy questionable plus when the Lusitinia near Ireland Churchill and the British admiraty knew there was a German UBoat in the area but chose to do nothing despite there was British ship in the area that could offer Lusitinia protection cause Churchill wanted to happen it will in away force USA to enter the war.

The sounds of splashing are boats falling into the water. The Evacuation was so rushed do to the speed and angle of the sinking they lowered them immediately without the captain's orders, Turner did not gave the order to do so until after he saw water reaching the top decks. In one instance, a man jumping onto one of the boats while been lowered away, broke it off the ropes, dropping the people into the sea.
On the port side, do to the angle, some of the boat slide over the deck, crushing many people onto the deck house, and not many where launched, do a few did broke off while trying to lower away.
