I live in New York City and commute to work on bike sometimes not always but it’s crazy how there are so many parking lots for cars but there is not a single parking lot for bikes like the one you show in this video, many people don’t commute to work on bikes because many are not allow to bring their bikes to work and fear that if they leave the bike outside it might get stolen and I’m one of them.
I live in New York City as well and bike only during the summers (I'm on transit otherwise). Our cycling infrastructure is nowhere near as safe as this. The percentage of possible trips that are fully separated from motor vehicles is negligible. I believe this is the biggest reason people aren't out cycling. Then there's our administration with the police ticketing cyclists even if they're following the law, but little attention is paid to the myriad of ways drivers routinely make unsafe decisions, whether that's parking on the doorzone bike lanes or skipping a red light.
When I was in the USA, I noticed that most Americans prefer to be lazy. I stayed ad a camp and all Europeans bought a bike to travel to town. The Americans took a cap and as they couldn't get one, they stayed ad the camp. I talked with people in New York about the infrastructure and even some people on bikes, did not like it as the roads for cars became narrower and that people that don't live in the city, are not allowed to drive there car into the city. They couldn't understand that the city could look way better with less cars and more green and space for bikes and predestinations. Even as a predestion, you aren't save everywhere. Most reasons I got that bikes don't work in the USA where. : We have hills. Distances are to long. It's dangerous. I don't like to bike. Hills are there but not that you can't ride a bike plus most places where I went, it was flat and good to ride your bike. The distance depends by person but most found 15 to 30 minits bike ride to long. Also people in the city found it to far to travel in there own city. Dangerous I can understand. The infrastructure is a joke and not only for bikes. It's just insane how many people die in a car crash or get injured. I don't like to bike where surten people. Not to be insulting but the fat ones don't like to bike but I think that they don't like to move ad all. But the ones that think that they are important, didn't also like to bike. I think because they think that it's for the poor people. To get more people on bikes will work with a better infrastructure, but not only that. Education is needed and would lower the amount of accidents already in the USA. I have seen what you need to get your drives licence and it was easy. You can't expect that people can drive as they pass for that. Also most people including cops, don't know traffic rules. It seems that nobody cares. People on bikes can also prevent a lot of accidents. They must choose there roads where to ride better. I have seen people ride there bikes where it's not allowed for bikes in my country because it's to dangerous. They ride in the middle of the road, blocking it for cars what makes that they don't like people on bikes and pass very close and fast. Ditch the helmet. This looks strange, but people in the USA that ride without a helmet have way less accidents. This because people without a helmet take less risks and cars keep way more distance from people without a helmet than with a helmet. Also a bike helmet will not save you from an accident with a car because they aren't designed for that. So change infrastructure, improve the education for you driven e license and make the level of the exam higher. Here children learn traffic rules ad a young age and learn how to ride there bike in traffic.
emiel1976ep that’s true, the problem is also in the government, cars help the economy a lot in the U.S so the government will not want to reduce cars. It’s sad but true, our government is not really focus on people or the environment , they only care about money. The Netherlands government is more friendly towards its citizens.
Great overview of all your fine work from this last year. Now I want to see the Antwerp Velo shared bikes episode. I lived in Antwerp for a year and was really impressed by the number of people using it and how much more convenient it is than the dutch OV-fiets system. With ov fiets the bike still only gets used max 5% of the time when you rent it and bring it home within 24hours. Lisbon introduced it last year and I really enjoyed seeing it there, as I wasn't a lonesome cyclist there anymore. Now Im back in NL after 4 years there :-), Holland is a true cycling paradise! But still there's a lot to improve!
I'm curious about the Antwerp Velo shared bikes; have seen them on my visits there but never used one. In which ways are these more convenient than the OV Fiets? I suppose the Antwerp bikes are scattered throughout the city, so you are not confined to the original location. Can you just leave the shared bike wherever there's a free space available at the docking station? Are these also just single speed bikes?
@@tetrabeetle8630 The Velo's have 'idiot proof' hub-gears, somewhere between 3 and 7. And yes, you can leave them at any free docking station. There are many docking stations (evenly) scattered throughout the city so not only at train stations. The trucks managing the docking stations ride around all the time so its rather rare to find an empty or a full dock (both bad). Price is muchhhhh lower than OV fiets, 50 euro's per year including free rides up to 30 minutes. You can swap bikes as often as you wish to ride around the whole day without extra cost. The whole system is more efficient than OV fiets because there's this incentive to not keep the bike for more than 30 minutes, so the system needs far less bikes. With OV fiets people can keep a bike for 24h for same cost of €2,50. Most don't actually ride it more than 60 minutes during the time of rental, so it misses the opportunity to rent out the same bike easily more than 10 times more on the same day! Today there's the new trend of dockless bike sharing. In theory that's very nice but in practice the companies don't seem to care too much about managing the thing. In Lisbon I saw that the management of the system was imperfect which really made that some people got fed up with the system. So many empty or full docking stations, broken bikes and a non-responsive helpdesk. But many people kept using the system, as public transport and driving (ridiculous traffic and fortunately not enough parking place for all those suburbians) are as unreliable in Lisbon haha.
@@TemwaJ Thanks for the extensive details! It definitely sounds like a very nice system in Antwerp. Can tourists also use these as well? I would love to explore Antwerp by bike next time, even if the infrastructure is not quite up to par with what the Dutch have. I guess the OV fiets is also not really a true bike-sharing system like what many cities around the world have, but rather a national system provided at many train stations. I do use it quite often on my meetings since I'm always returning to the station anyway. At 3.85 Euros per rental, it's definitely not the cheapest although they did eliminate the 10 Euro annual subscription. There's certainly room for improvement, and I wonder if it would ever be possible to make the OV fiets more like a bike-sharing system (many docking stations) at least in the larger cities. But it's not meant for tourists and the vast majority of Dutch people either have their own bikes or can rent these with their personal ov chipkaart, so I'm doubtful this will ever be worthwhile for NS. For my specific uses, it's been quite nice. Although once I was at the Hengelo station (unmanned) and even though there were clearly 15 bikes remaining, the computer kept telling me there were none. Apparently people had taken all the keys to "reserve" them, which was quite annoying.
@@tetrabeetle8630 €4 a day, €10 per week. www.velo-antwerpen.be/. Yes, the locals always get better deals ;-). I used ov-fiets in the past, it's very convenient and quick indeed to get a bike at a train station where you arrive anyway elsewhere in the country.
