I'm Turkish and I would have never expected to see a Saz on Graham Norton! That's wild. Fun fact, the stringed instrument you hear on the Witcher OST is a saz. The bit he played at the start reminded me of the Witcher
I just sub to your channel, for some reason, i never knew that BBC has a youtube channel 😅, while i was in the UK i've always love watching it. Now i really miss the UK and hoping to go back soon. 🇬🇧🇬🇧
That instrument has more in common with an Irish bouzouki than a Turkish saz. It has no quartertone frets, and the shape and size of the body are very different.
I was going to say... It might be similar but it doesn't particularly look like the traditional saz... I'm saying that as a saz owner & player myself.. it sounds similar but doesn't have the same shape so would need to look at the strings & examine it closely to ascertain its exact identity... ✌️
I too have never seen a saz like that, but it's Bill Bailey and he knows music inside out, so I'm shutting up even though I'm somewhat of a Turk. It does sort of sound like one though.
Fun Fact Atlantic Records was owned by Ahmet Ertegün who was Turkish Led Zeppelin and many Rock groups and Jazz groups inspired from traditional Turkish Folk music and there is a whole genre called Turkish Anatolian Folk Rock aka Turkish Psychedelic Rock. Türkiye has 81 cities and some of these cities have thousands of folk songs each Turkish music is an ocean if you dive in to you will never regret.
@@blorkpovud1576 Irish Baglama? This is the first time I've heard of this. Bağlama is a Turk instrument and it's a Turkic word. It means to ''tie''. It probably has to do with tying strings. Anyway i first heard of Irish Baglama from you and I was surprised that our culture has spread to Ireland! Because when it comes to Turkish music, most westerners think of Arabic melodies. Thank you for teaching me this even if unintentionally :D Greetings from Turkey and have a nice day.
This instrument is not a saz. The fret system of a bağlama or saz is different and includes microtones. The instrument here resembles a Greek bouzouki more.
This is not a Turkish instrument, it is more like the Arabic instrument Bızık, but its neck is like a guitar and Bızık synthesis, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Turkish instrument Saz (bağlama). By the way, I play saz and my knowledge in this field is not bad👍🏻
This is not Turkish, it´s confirmed by the top musicians in Middle East that this is a Kurdish instrument. Just like everything else, the Turks claim ownership over cultural traditions and artificats that belongs to other ethnicities
Please share your sources for your claim, and who these top ME musicians are. To my knowledge the saz is a further development of Turkic instruments from Central Asia.
Then why do the Kurds of Iran lack the saz a.k.a. bağlama? Why do they play the tanbur/tembur instead? Why do only the Kurds of the former Ottoman territories play the saz? That's because they learned it from Turks. Turkish saz/bağlama and Turkish çöğür are related to the lutes of other Turkic peoples i.e. Tuvan tovshuur, Kyrgyz komuz, Kazakh dombra, Crimean Tatar saz, Azerbaijani qopuz/gopuz, Turkmen dutar, Uzbek dutar, Uyghur dutar.

I can hear it. Yes, it's different from a piano rendition as you've possibly heard from Sir Elton, but it would also sound different on a six-string steel guitar, or a marimba, or a saxophone.
Bill Bailey is a national treasure.
💯
The wonderful Bill Bailey 🧿I am Turkish and this is such a wonderful occasion! Amazing❤
WOW is there no end to Bill Baileys talent. Candle in the Wind on an instrument that only has x3 strings!

elinde saz degilki, saza benzer birsey

He is AMAZING! I saw him on his "En Route to Normal" Tour in 2021 and he was supremely talented, both in stand-up comedy and music! 👏🏻
I got the chills. Bill Baileys don't come along very often.
I love this instrumental of this song . More musicians should use this Saz instrument. It's a cool sound 😎 Thanks Bill 😘
Turkish Saz!! Beautiful sound.
Without question THE most talented person on the TV and stage the UK has ever seen. Lord Bailey.
Bill is such a legend! I loved it
the first riffs were such a banger
I can't stop replaying 0:28 help
Love Bill Bailey, extraordinary talent

He is amazingly brilliant
Not too bad... all instruments considered! 😅 as Bill once said at his show.
Great performance by all means. Keep on playin'. 🇬🇧🇹🇷
Brilliant. Love your subversion of that classic Bailey comic reference!😂
Good reference drop.

Like Bill I also sport a 'Skullet' (bald headed Mullet).
Beautiful!!🙂
Just wonderful

What is the song he played at the beginning? I love it so much!
probably improvised
Not a traditional saz but sounds beautiful.
It is a Turkish saz. But it must have been built on a specific order. Traditional Turkish saz doesn't look like that in phenotype.
It's his own version though, he invented that one
I was wondering that. Reminded me more of an Irish Baglama.
It's a Paul Hathway model - flat back and quite different from the usual type.

Bill should be knighted!!!! all hail Sir Bill Bailey!
What's the first song?
WHERE ARE MY MICROTONES?
Is there nothing that Bill Bailey cannot play???
It looks more like an Irish Bazouki that a Turkish Saz
How did he tune the strings on this saz?

actually that's not a saz, there's no quarter note, it is more a greek or irish bouzouki with very thin neck like a saz
It seems his Saz modified. Because it doesnt sound like a Saz completly.
Bill Bailey should of cast as Tom Bombadil
It’s a variation of the Irish bouzouki
This does not sound like a saz.
he did not bring didgeridoo with him ? oh crikey

This saz was made by Paul hathway. Pretty no?
It's not a saz ☺️
It's a bozuk ("modified") saz which Greek bouzouki and Syrian buzuq were descended from.
Robinson Timothy Hall Michelle Jones Maria
This does not look and sound like saz.
Sure, He is very talented man. but its not saz. İt sounds very similar, but its not saz.
Looks more like a three course bouzouki. Having no quarter notes either.
Why call it a turkish saz?
its not a saz. idk wtf that is. that thing is an abomination.
This not saz 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Doesn't sound anything like candle in the wind
I can hear it. Yes, it's different from a piano rendition as you've possibly heard from Sir Elton, but it would also sound different on a six-string steel guitar, or a marimba, or a saxophone.
You need your ears cleaning. I am about as musical as a brick but I heard it.
I like Bill but eww.
What, do you hate the sound of the instrument?
Horrible
OK, and your next single is coming out when?
