    Jack sounds fascinating to me. I was that “good girl” attracted to “bad boys” in my teen years, so I get how she might have been attracted to him, aside from the lack of confidence. 😈 I might give that one a try. So many interesting elements going on here. 😁

    Interesting reviews! I think the first time the "different generation perspective" hit me was when I read Julie & Julia and realized I thought the main character was really whining/complaining a lot, only to see that younger readers tended to really identify with her. Peace!

    • @AJDunnReads
      @AJDunnReads 2 года назад +1

      She WAS whining and complaining a lot, which she fully acknowledged. 🤣 She also fully acknowledged that she was an ungrateful b*tch. That's why I liked it. 🤣

      I think we all should identify with this. In life if you look closely in all mirrors we all whine and complain if we look closely. With age and self growth some of us work on this in life. Others never change.

    Great reviews, AJ! I own Gilead so I really need to start this series. As you know, I read Normal People as well and it's interesting that you talk about the millennial perspective because there was something I couldn't put my finger on that kind of bugged me about it, and that might be it! The relationship was so unhealthy and yet they needed each other too but couldn't see that it was ok to just be together. I thought it was very sad. 😊💙

      Thanks, Deb. I'd say _Normal People_ is an easy pass if you're not interested. Of course, I had to read _Jack_ since I liked the other books in the series so much. Not sorry I read it, but I think I liked his character as more of a periphery role.

      @@AJDunnReads Jack I know was the end of a series. I couldn’t understand why books that are in the end or middle of a book series would be on the Booktube Prize. Since I read nonfiction I didn’t have to worry about it! Of course, the nonfiction readers had to read Red Comet by Heather Clark. I adored it. It is my favorite nonfiction book of the year. My favorite fiction book was Things in Jars by Jess Kidd. I love her writing style.

    Really liked these reviews. My favorite of the three Gilead novels that I have read is Lila. Jack features a bit in the others, and I never liked him. I never could understand why his father favored him. The daughter who comes home seemed just too unassertive. So even before reading Jack I can see why you'd wonder what Delia sees in him. I don't think my dislike stems from him simply not being a "good" person, I think it might be more that Robinson is not as compelling at depicting moral ambiguity. Not sure about this, and I guess I will have to read it to explore this idea further. I might try Normal People, you made it sound quite interesting. Drinking is a BIG part of British culture, in a slightly different way than German culture, where controlled but sustained drinking is completely socially acceptable. Even "day drinking" e.g. you'll see people having a drink with their lunch. (They sell beer at McDonalds and in the student cafeterias).

    Love others like you want to be loved regardless of religion or heritage.
    No one has to hide anymore and no one should have ever had to but history is important. Only if we learn from it.
