my biggest issue is that the show is just gag driven now, it's plotless and the only thing an episode consists of is gag after gag
old episodes had gags too but what made them so memorable was the character dialogue, gags were memorable but the characters drove the story and their writing was funny, even season 4 understood this

Spongebob is actually doing great compared to other long-lasting shows, it got better animation, most of it's old writers came back, they are now exploring new stories with older characters. As opposed to the Simpsons which only exists to be Disney's advertising agency and cheap celebrity guest star fodder or South Park which never grew out of the culture war stuff.

It was actually normal for kids shows to have pretty attractive female characters, mainly because boys liked them and looked up to those characters. The only reason they don't now is because feminazis infitrated the entertainment industry and demanded that all female characters be stripped of their attractive form and made more generic and ugly. Try watching 90s cartoons like Dexter's Lab and the Powerpuff Girls. You'll understand what I mean. I haven't seen the recent episodes, but the lack of dialogue reminds me of the group exercise we had in theatre back in high school where we had to act out scenes using "Oh" as the only word allowed in the dialogue.
Why would you want them to tone down the expressions? Just so Spongebob can look like just another bland animated sitcom with no soul put into it? Would you rather the artists just trace model sheets over and over again like they do on stuff like Bojack Horseman?
