What bothers me a lot about this expansion is the fact that tiles, for example room tiles say dwarfs on them and everything in the base game is themed around dwarfs, then you play trolls and they sleep in cozy little dwarf rooms with cute little furniture growing pumpkins and building stables and such. Then we have elves building quarry, parlors and rooms with cave in the title, in the trees. Some of that is fixed by replacing some of the tiles that make less thematic sense but only 4 of them each race so everything is pretty much still about dwarfs. I know its not really meant to change everything about the game, its just to give some variety, but the theme does not hit home somehow. Some of the races fit really well, the other dwarfs for sure, the humans.. eeeeeh ok. The Hobbits I feel fit in really well, but they were not a part of the expansion, rather a promotional item, It has probably been said a million times but they really should have been in the box and one of the edgy looking elf or human variants should have been a promo, but hey, that's just me rambling and there were probably well thought and logical marketing reasons for the decisions. I like Caverna a lot, But I'm not liking forgotten folk as much as I wanted or hoped to. It adds to the fiddliness of the setup, It will make whatever inserts you have for the base game obsolete, Its not as thematic as I hoped it to be. I don't want to bash it completely thought. It does give the game variety. Even if the paths to victory feels a bit fixed for each race, you still get 8 of them. I like most of the artwork, trolls are spot on, goblins, regular humans, silicoids and mountain dwarves are very good. I don't care for the artwork of the other (edgier) races and although I love the hobbits as a playable race and the functions of them I hate the artwork for them. I'm picky and pretty new to Caverna, so maybe since I am still discovering the inns and outs of the core game It is to early for me to be adding this so soon, I can see how this can however breath some fresh on a vetaran Caverna player who might be all dwarfed out.
Haha thats some serious thematic thoughts there, while I kinda agree I do like the game regardless and for me Caverna base game had gotten a bit samey and I dont like how it in difference of Agricola doesnt had variantion in cards/buildings from game to game, so now Its way better imo. :)
Ok, all of this looks awesome and I must get it for sure, but noticed some expansion stuff is sounding a bit more at the dark fantasy side of things. Trolls eat anything and they eat bones too, so they get more food from animals. There are bone carver and candle maker(from the fat of animals you slaughter I guess?) as new rooms. And dark elves' goblins are slaves I think since you get them from expeditions and they are weaker than normal workers.
Office room: twin tiles may overhang: every time you do so: +2 Gold.
Thanks! I dont think I ever used that... :)
Well, Legolas comes from the Elvenking's Halls in the Woodland Realm which itself is a cave system.
Good info there, Im sure the movies did miss some details.. :D

Yeah, way more thematic than I expected...and darker, but seems great! :D
Kinda sad to see that a game I'd always praised for having sturdy, wooden tokens went for cardboard for the expansion...
Agree, but I guess it works fine, at least it isnt those thin cardboard pieces!
