@@jarrodbright5231 Forgot to give the item a turn limit, or cursed it so it shatters after they leave the current dungeon. That's how you learn as a dungeon master.
Xenk was a Lawful Good Paladin. He assisted the group long enough to retrieve what they needed by battling evil forces, but because the group was going on a theft mission, he could not in good conscience assist them with their primary mission of stealing the tablet.
Exactly - and that's a great reason for the NPC not to continue travelling with the party after he has helped them recover the magical item they aren't high enough level to get themselves.
Even then this one differs after the first pounding, in tone from the Avengers. Chris says he thinks Sofina has had enough, and then Doric double handedly pounds her against the ground, roars in Sofina's face, and throws her against a tower wall. Then she changes back and quietly rejoins the group. I appreciated that scene.

I've only been playing 5e for a couple years but I can honestly say of all the magical items I've read about or seen in-game, I can't recall seeing a single item having a level requirement to attune to it.
The closest thing to a level requirement I can recall is the Wand of Orcus where if you try to attune to it, you need to pass a DC 17 constitution saving throw. Even if you make the save, you still take 10d6 necrotic damage (minimum 10 damage) which could outright kill a level 3 or lower character if max damage is rolled. On a fail you straight up die and become a zombie.
There are a handful of very powerful objects that needs extra steps to attune, like a chaos weapon for example. But a DM can freely create whatever object he/she likes with extra difficoulties to attune.
You have the plot did Dungeons & Dragons all wrong. What you don't understand is that in the movie there is a group of people playing the game controlling the characters. The fact that the wizard couldn't attune to the helmet wasn't due to his level it was because the dungeon master didn't want him to. See the party was supposed to focus on the tournament and not the vault. The helmet not a tuning was a hint from the DM to stop focusing on the vault. The paladin was brought in to walk the characters through getting the helmet through this insanely high area because they wanted the item to get to the vault. When the players set the trap on the bridge the DM had to come up with an idea on the spot to get them through it so he came up with a hither thither staff and he got the idea because he was playing portal. The fact that the paladin could kill almost everything inside the dungeon and the players couldn't was to make them run away. And the fact that the players couldn't use the staff properly to get into the vault was another clue to the DM to stop trying to get into the vault. Finally the DM just had to say rocks fall the tentacles and kidnapped them all and put them in the tournament which was supposed to be the main focus of the whole campaign to begin with.
I have played D&D since the late 70's and worked with TSR on four D&D video games. I thought this movie was entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. The owlbear thing didn't bother me. It's a home brew exception that the DM made when the player rolled their character. Happens all the time. I would have like to see more bard magic. But Valor Bards are kind of boring. And the Wild Magic Sorcerer is not able to attune to the helmet but can cast reverse gravity ( a 7th level spell). I loved the depiction of Neverwinter, although I am partial to Waterdeep. I would have like to see at least one reference to Tomb of Horrors - but that is a Greyhawk realm.
Yeah, when I was watching the movie I was saying "why isn't the bard casting spells? Is he really a bard and not just a rogue who performs?". Later in the movie I saw the Major Image spell & I was like "finally... he casts a spell," but then I saw Simon dismiss it & that meant that the bard cast nothing. He did dole out some Bardic Inspiration & did an Inspiring Speech though.
Though looking at it I sort of understand they wanted to keep everything distinct for the uninitiated. If everyone is casting spells the general public is pretty dumb and won’t understand that more than one person can cast spells. Doric is the shape changer. Holga is the beat things up one. Simon is the magic user. I don’t like the choice but I understand the reason why. First get people hooked in then introduce more complex things like more than one person casting spells. The general public has a very low INT. An individual is more intelligent.
@@targetdreamer257 yep, the bard character had to play the role of being a "real" connection to the audience. If everyone was fantasy like, the entire thing would feel like a big well made cutscence from a game.
What about Shrek easter egg? The scene where that fat dragon is chasing them, its clearly a reference to similar scene in Shrek 1, where shrek and donkey are running from lady dragon across a rope/wooden bridge. Similar music, identic angles. It was hella funny.
Did u not know what happened with the helmet, u said he leveled up but not only did he do nothing that would have earned him a level up like be in any fight, but the reason he was able to attune was because he did something different and belived in himself, punching his ancestor did not require a level up to do, its more like he just beat a puzzle if anything by doing something different as the DM made it a character driven choice to help with character development for Simon
It is wise to leave a character behind the glass cannons, since attacks can occur from behind! I played the "Son of a Lich" Perkin Tam, son of Sazz Tam! Feed a Mimic enough and it can join the party, but must keep it well fed!
I'd hoped to see one of those "Monster Manual" trolls...tall and lanky...scary AF. Regenerate limbs, so you need a "sword of wounding" or fire to kill them. I'm channeling my 12yo self right now.
Simon thought it was Elminster, but it was someone taking on his form, which I think reflects his inner doubts. Once Simon was able to muster the courage to fight back against them, he turned into a copy of Simon to show that he finally overcame his self-doubt and could attune to the helmet.
In 5e the Owlbear is impossible. However, in the Pathfinder setting, a Druid can turn into an Owlbear at level 10. The Wyld Shape Ability uses the mechanics of the Beast Shape Spell. At Level 10 Druids can use Beast Shape 4 and turn into a Large Magical Beast. The Owlbear in Pathfinder is classified as a Large Magical Beast [not a Monstrosity], so it is completely within the rules. w00t!!
they talk about the 80s DnD cartoon and dont talk about how they were in the arena .... they are another team to the right of the main characters when the scene starts
Yup the producers were total DnD nerds putting so much fan service in this flick. I look forward to a "D&D: Homeland" series, honoring our favorite Drow weaponsmaster.
And the displacer beast does not project and image of itself. It has an aura around it that makes it harder to hit. There is a chance that your attack will miss even if you roll enough to hit.
Mordenkainen is supposed to originate from the Greyhawk realm, which is D&D's first realm, before Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. Ah, Dragonlance, it would be good to see a live action version of that Saga. Instead of the Nine Hells, it would be to the Abyss with you. I believe the Gelatinous Cube was inspired by The Blob in the 50's, because their properties are so similar. Of course, the remake of the Blob is far more terrifying. And Intellect Devourer do not seek the most intelligent party members, but rather the lowest intelligent party members. They enter their heads, consume their brains, and possess members by replacing themselves in place of a brain. They know this because the tankiest of the party members are usually low in intelligence.
15:05 Ummm, for a druid she sure didn't use any druid spells but she sure was able to shapeshift, almost like her character was a "shifter" rather than a druid.

was this written by AI? Nat20 and Nat1 does neither of those things. the only thing similar to this statement is that a Critical hit (nat 20) will bypass AC. if a character has -1 dex modifier and rolls a Dex Save, (set to 20) a Nat 20 means you still fail.
Nat 20 / Nat 1 also works for Death saves as well as attack rolls in 5E. It's quite possible that the writer's knowledge of the natural 20 / natural 1 rule is from playing early access of Baldur's Gate 3 where it does in fact do what the video says it does.

Simon failing to attune until reaching higher level is not an easter egg. There are no level requirements for attunement in 5e. It's just a made up thing for the movie. Nothing wrong with that, but please don't claim it's some sort of easter egg for the D&D game.

I know right. All he does is whack people over the head with his lute.
That bugged me too until Simon admitted the reverse gravity was a wild magic effect, not an intended spell.
RULE OF COOL! DM allowed the Owlbear!
I loved the reference to the cartoon D&D characters.
Ah, the DnD cartoon, a standard isekai fantasy cartoon before it was cool.
He could have leveled up and put the Attribute Increase all into CHA.
@@jerryharris876 true but then how does charisma help punch his ancestor in the face and also go threw character development
Icewind Dale is also the setting D&D's The Icewind Dale trilogy, which centers around one of the most famous characters in D&D, Drizzt Do'Urden.
Dungeons and dragons was one of best recent movies. They perfectly mixed fantasy and comedy.
I'm channeling my 12yo self right now.
there is just so much material in D&D, if we get the same directors/writers we can have a hundred movies like this
For me, I really love the Volothamp easter egg
I didn't see the Rug of Smothering, only Transmute Rock, that Sofina was casting.
Three words: Drizzt Do'Urden
Please!!
Go talk to Salvatore about the rights then
That's two. Do'Urden is a surname and hence only 1 word.
I absolutely love the shit out of this film and was so happy with all the little references (even though I apparently didn't get all of them) 😉
That wasn't Elminster. That was an older simon.
Simon thought it was Elminster, but it was someone taking on his form, which I think reflects his inner doubts. Once Simon was able to muster the courage to fight back against them, he turned into a copy of Simon to show that he finally overcame his self-doubt and could attune to the helmet.
@@DangerousArmyGuy no, he just called him an ancestor if i recall correctly.
The Owlbear in Pathfinder is classified as a Large Magical Beast [not a Monstrosity], so it is completely within the rules. w00t!!
and thats why Pathfinder is better
Loved the movie.
*EDIT:* the Jurassic Park homage at 11:24 also pays homage to the Hobbit Trilogy (Bilbo running away from Smaug).
they talk about the 80s DnD cartoon and dont talk about how they were in the arena .... they are another team to the right of the main characters when the scene starts
Yup the producers were total DnD nerds putting so much fan service in this flick.
I look forward to a "D&D: Homeland" series, honoring our favorite Drow weaponsmaster.
@@garypotter5569 lol Drizzt's daddy
I believe Joe Manganiello is working on a Dragonlance TV series with some Hasbro money backing the project.
15:05 Ummm, for a druid she sure didn't use any druid spells but she sure was able to shapeshift, almost like her character was a "shifter" rather than a druid.
all these references, even draging ocean eleven's into this, but not one word about guardians of the galaxy. this film basically shares the same story beats and characters dna with the 1st guardians. love both films btw.
Take a shot every time the narrator says dungeon, or dragon
You will wake up in the hospital
A fantasy movie that doesn't make die hard fans the biggest villains? Wow! That's refreshing!
I have to admit I missed the Easter egg throwback to the 80s cartoon series characters, I should have caught that.
In the 2000 movie they say honor amongst thieves a lot.
Take a shot everytime "Dungeons and dragons honor among thieves" is mentioned
A druid able to wildshape into an owlbear is most likely a nod to the shifter class from 3rd edition.
Or the Shifter race in 5e.
If I’m not wrong in Baldur’s gate druids can transform into owlbears
I want the next movie to have a party of a Monk, Ranger, Artificer and Warlock.
There is No Next Movie.
@@richardtracy8242 not yet
Not Ever.
D&D Bombed at the Boxoffice.
@@richardtracy8242 so did the first movie in 2000 but it had 3 sequels on SYFY.
No way they'll keep wasting money on Future D&D films.
Zenk definitely feels way more like a player who joined the group for a few sessions before realizing the scheduling just couldn't allow for him to continue with the group.
If Honor Among Thieves REALLY wanted to throw in an Easter Egg they should have had a heavily scarred man show up for a few moments to do random shit to help the party before disappearing. This film was so fun.
They missed Dragonlance’s Flint FireForge who is dwarf in the maze.
Some... interesting interpretations....
I loved the rolly poley dragon
Anyone thinking the druid can't change into an Owlbear is clearly Lawful Good. Not Lawful Evil.
Not even going to mention the striking resemblance of Doric to Critical Roll’s Keyleth?
What videogame is shown in the themberchaud part, at minute 11:37?
what a bummer !! when Baldur's Gate game is mentionned, we see images of BG3. The third is breaking away from the first two games, and I much more enjoy these two. And thw frist two embodiment way more D&D in my opinion.
The portals were cool
Never trust Volo. If you accept a quest from Volo, then prepare to lose a couple of teammates.
Okay hear me out. The next film we get Dany Devito.
Just saw just now 😊
The, uh...the name of the movie is also a not very subtle reference to the 2000 movie. "Honor among thieves" is a repeated line in the latter
I don’t think that old guy was Elminster he didn’t have his pointy hat and Simon said his grandfather was dead (Elminster is alive) I thought it was another family member in between them in the linage
Elminster has been dead at times as well. I do think that was Elminster.
I believe it was an older version of Simon. To attune to the helm he was really fighting his own lack of confidence.
@@wendell52003 thats what I thought too. Since he literally morphs from the old guy to himself and is like,.."It's about time".
This guy wasn't elminster at all.
He is a descendant of Elminster, we don't know how many greats in between them.
So the poor dragon succumbed to the Covid 20 (tons) give the thic boi a break
This is your daily reminder about the OGL fiasco.
Rolling A twenty does NOT automatically succeed in a task.
No mention of Menzoberanzan and the Drow in the intellect devourer scene😢
was this written by AI? Nat20 and Nat1 does neither of those things. the only thing similar to this statement is that a Critical hit (nat 20) will bypass AC. if a character has -1 dex modifier and rolls a Dex Save, (set to 20) a Nat 20 means you still fail.
Nat 20 / Nat 1 also works for Death saves as well as attack rolls in 5E.
It's quite possible that the writer's knowledge of the natural 20 / natural 1 rule is from playing early access of Baldur's Gate 3 where it does in fact do what the video says it does.
Is no one going to point out that the intellect devourers didn't notice the party because no one is intelligence based?
I think you missed one I feel the castle is modelled after Disney’s castle and I think the fireworks were added to portray this. although it is a paramount movie.
rocket after peter's losers speech: "okay im standing now. happy? bunch of idiots standing in a circle."
simon after ed's losers speech: "i want to sit down, but theres no more space."
jurassic park? monthy python and ocean's eleven?? u missed the biggest one. this film is basically guardians of galaxy redux. same story beats, same tone and style.
Ehrmantraut plays D&D?! Which movie features this? I dont know it
Podría ser el segundo grupo en el laberinto una referencia a los juegos de recreativa de Capcom????
Also druids, sorcerers and bards are all spell casters
Aren't the Nine Hells ripped straight from Dante's Inferno?
Helmet of disjunction? There's a spell called Mordenkainen's Disjunction.
Definitely Xenk is DMPC* for a one session (remember the paladin from Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising by ZOE entertainment). Look at Forge or Kira - they are real NPCs, not the Xenk.
*Dungeon Master's Player Character
I LOVED the Gamers 2!!
Simon failing to attune until reaching higher level is not an easter egg. There are no level requirements for attunement in 5e. It's just a made up thing for the movie. Nothing wrong with that, but please don't claim it's some sort of easter egg for the D&D game.
Would those giant hands in the final battle count as Bigby's Hand spells?
Sofina is using Bigby's, Simon is using Maximilian’s Earthen Grasp.
Id rather considered Xenk as "that guy" Who showed up in one or two sessions, then never again
Good movie
So I was gonna bail on the video once I got to the first "easter-egg" that's not actually an easter-egg (as 99% of these videos dont seem to understand what an easter egg is) but instead I'm just gonna dip out here. There is NO level requirement to attune to magical items in D&D 5e. Get a damn writer that at least knows the rules.
