L56A3 Smartgun
Weyland-Yutani's most recent Smartgun focuses on mobility and reliability over power and tracking capabilities. Still, when you gotta hit the target, use a Smartgun.
The M56 Smartgun was originally developed for the Colonial Marines. A computer-controlled, self aiming, power-assisted "battle harness," there was little for a gunner to do beside repostion the weapon and pull the trigger. Some cynically dubbed the M56 a "manned sentry gun."
Smartgun rigs allowed pinpoint-accurate fire, but limited the gunner's ability to take cover. This was never considered an issue in the Colonial Marines, who doctrinally prefer offensive maneuver to static defense. When advances in smart-targeting tech allowed armor-mounted sensors to wirelessly interface with weapon ballistics computers, the smartgun's liabilities finally outweighed its utility, and procurements ceased.
Weyland Yutani continued to iterate on the design, however, increasing articulation and reducing overall mass of the support rig through the use of nano-manufactured metamaterials. This "L56" variant was adopted for use in the armed forces of the Three World Empire. It is finding its way back into Colonial Marine service, largely through the efforts of experienced noncoms with fond memories of the original.
