You mentioned the other two husbands were not that bad so I found a list of what they did. You missed some of it while talking. Here’s a deeper look at what each husband did wrong, beyond leaving his wife:
    1. Aaron (Brenda's Husband)
    Infidelity:
Aaron cheats on Brenda with a younger woman, Shelly, which shatters Brenda’s trust and emotional well-being.
    Financial Mistreatment:
Despite Brenda’s significant role in helping Aaron build his successful electronics store, he is dismissive of her contributions, treating her as though she was of no importance to his success.
    Gaslighting and Blaming:
Aaron continuously belittles Brenda, making her feel insecure about her weight and appearance. Instead of supporting her emotionally, he contributes to her insecurities and essentially blames her for why the relationship didn’t work.
    Greed and Stinginess:
Aaron fights Brenda during the divorce settlement, trying to minimize the financial support he gives her, despite the fact that he’s living a lavish lifestyle with his new, younger girlfriend.
    2. Bill (Elise's Husband)
    Emotional Neglect:
Bill married Elise when she was a young, beautiful movie star and expected her to always be a glamorous trophy wife. As she aged, he emotionally abandoned her and was unsupportive when her career began to falter.
    Superficiality and Objectification:
Bill leaves Elise for a younger actress, which shows that he values women primarily for their physical appearance and status. His superficial treatment of Elise, ignoring her emotional needs, led to her deep insecurities about aging and her career.
    Deception and Manipulation:
Bill manipulates Elise financially. While Elise battles her insecurities and undergoes cosmetic surgeries to maintain her image, Bill is seeing a younger woman behind her back, making Elise’s efforts to win his affection futile.
    Financial Abuse:
Bill tries to keep Elise from getting a fair share of their joint assets, despite her sacrifices during their marriage. He devalues her contributions and dismisses her emotional investment in their relationship.
    3. Morton (Annie's Husband)
    Emotional Abuse:
Morton undermines Annie’s self-esteem throughout their marriage, leading her to feel inadequate and dependent on him. He was critical of her for years, contributing to her feelings of insecurity.
    Infidelity:
Morton leaves Annie for their therapist, which adds an extra layer of betrayal. As her therapist, the woman knew about Annie’s personal struggles and used that information to manipulate the situation in her favor.
    Manipulation:
Morton emotionally manipulates Annie into taking the blame for their failed marriage, causing her to internalize feelings of inadequacy. He gaslights her by making her believe she was the problem in their marriage, instead of acknowledging his role.
    Exploitation of Annie’s Vulnerability:
By dating their therapist, Morton exploits Annie’s trust. He also pressures Annie to quickly finalize their divorce on unfavorable terms to Annie, showing a lack of respect or consideration for her well-being.

Just speaking of the Bette Midler/Dan Hedaya relationship, I remember all of what you mentioned, but I still don’t feel the “punishment fits the crime.” I would argue that the filmmakers also don’t feel that he was all that bad since they have them stay together in the end. You wouldn’t want one of your main characters to end up with someone horrible.

So when I was in film school, this is one of the films we talked about, and the entire class for that block, all we talked about is everything you said. Basically how frankly it wasn't that bad and that the women were actually the villains. But why did this work to make people not realize this and to be blinded by it, because they set up the 60s aspect, and the lightheartedness of it, and the faces of these famous people, and that's why you don't realize. And that's why people with charisma can get away with anything.

You said it is unfair to make the daughter choose sides. I guess you missed the scene in the kitchen where the daughter hates her father and thinks he is a terrible person and wants her mother to stop being a doormat for him.

You mean the famous scene where the daughter comes out as a lesbian to little fanfare? We saw it. We LOVED that scene. And you're right. If you feel like a doormat to your ex, go ahead and weaponize your kid, I guess.

Wait, why do you think they Victor Garber's character's girlfriend wasn't a minor? I don't remember the movie ever saying she wasn't actually a minor, she definitely was

Haha, I say this without meaning to be mean, but I don't think this can be called a reaction, you missed important moments by not stopping talking; and the biggest crime for me was the final part; you weren't even watching the scene. 😢

So the whole thing is... we didn't miss any moments. Doesn't everybody do two things when watching movies? Aren't you on your phone the whole time? At least we're talking about the movie and not looking at cat videos.
