THIS! I was so happy lenovo had that feature included in their legion series. Especially since I keep my laptop plugged in majority of the time this is a HUGE hack to save your battery that I feel like not many people know/use.
The funniest thing is when you get a new gaming laptop and play a game that is 10+ years old and ran perfectly fine on your old one. New games are rarely as good as the old ones.
The worst thing is playing a retro game(typically 15+ years) and they no longer work on your new system cause of compatibility issues without mods and fixes Or the game's pc port was just bad since launch, looking at you og dead space.
Haha same here! When I got my Asus GL502VT in 2016, I used it to play SimCity 4 (a 2003 game). Then when I replaced it with my current G513RM in late 2023, I’m using it to play Anno 1404 (a 2009 game)!

My 1660Ti Legion 5 is still good for me. I don't play the latest games, I buy the ones that have been out a while now and on sale. And any e-sports game it still handles well.
Same here. I got a 1060 6gb dell g7 with 32gb ram upgraded from 8gb, 2tb storage, 8th gen i7. I can still play a lot of newer games. Cod 3.0, apex, etc etc... Playing older games like destiny 2 on high settings looks beautiful. I WANT to upgrade, but dont really NEED to lol
Same here with my 3050Ti Legion 5. I mostly play older games & e sports titles. It runs games like RDR 2 & God of War fairly well at med-high settings since I get around 60-75 fps & on most esports titles I play are always over 144fps since I play those at lower settings. One thing I've stopped doing that he mentioned was the driver updates, specifically graphics drivers. I recently had a weird issue like 2 months ago when I'd been updating drivers almost as soon as they got released & had some random artifacts showing up on my display after that update(i think it was a January update). I reverted my drivers & the issue went away & after reading through a few threads on different platforms I realised it's not always the best thing to download some of the graphics drivers too soon especially in my case where I don't typically play any of the newer games.
A man of culture! I have the exact one and you'd be surprised how well it still performs with many new games brother. Just needs a few tweaks. I'm currently playing Horizon Forbidden west with 50+ FPS with medium yo high settings. Such a BEASTLY laptop to this day! I'm finally getting ready to upgrade though, picking up the Strix 16 this month. Found one with the 4060 and 13650HX at a decent price.
Same, 1660 Ti, different brand. Just look what's still playable on a Steam Deck. In a way, mass gaming is still back with the venerable 1060 era and the 1660 Ti has more grunt than that. Allegedly things have moved on to 3060, but until mass hits at least 1080p 60fps Ray Tracing Ultra Cyberpunk 2077, the needle has barely moved. I thought we'd at least be 4k 120 fps mid by now. I feel like I'll be dead before that's mass adopted affordable, things are so slow.
Tip #6: Repaste your CPU and GPU if they are throttleing a lot and you dont see the performance which these components usually manage to reach. I had to repaste my Legion 5 2021 last year in summer because the thermal paste was completely dried out. After I repasted it with PTM 7950 it was like 50% faster and not near as loud as before and I also got even higher scores in TimeSpy and Cinebench than after purchase.
@@charno_zhyem its also called "repasting" for PTM, at least thats how everyone is calling it in LaptopWiki Community in Discord and where i found out about PTM 7950. :)
For me, tip 1 depends on the situation. Sometimes, new updates can cause errors and be more unstable than the old version. For example, I updated to the latest GPU driver last March and couldn’t share my screen via Discord and OBS. I didn’t know where the problem originated until I realized it was due to the update and rolled back the GPU driver.
Cleaning dust is so important really, difference I saw is the capability to run a game at 4k medium instead of 1080p low, just cleaned dust nothing else.

My current gaming laptop (Asus ROG GL503VD, i5 7300HQ, 16Gb RAM DC, GTX 1050 4Gb, 512Gb M.2SSD, 1Tb HDD) is turning 6 this year. I am upgrading now but for my first gaming laptop to last that long, it's a testament that it's not just the quality of the laptop but TLC from the user as well. Also know the strengths and weaknesses of your machine and never push it to its limits.

I say fix the games... Red dead online proves it.. game is a masterpiece and imo still the greatest game ever made.. thx for ur astounding laptop videos.. i am in love w mine 4 years later.. repasting made a world of difference as asus thermal paste sucked..i highly recommend to anyone if they get a product from asus look at their thermal solution before using and repaste/repad as needed.. it was literally powder on the cpu.. i used corsair xtm 70 after cleaning.. what is your opinion anyone on xtm 70?
People just be turning off their computers and consoles while their game is running and their system is burning hot. You gotta close out the game and let your PC sit for a few minutes so it can cool itself. It will last way longer.
@skyscall yeah that guy is way off about heat being the issue there. It's the storage drive corruption you start getting high chances of having if power is abruptly removed from the system while it runs tasks.
Tip 5 is easily the option everyone should know. People should accept the fact they can lower the settings to get more FPS in modern games. Even on low settings, I think modern games look good.
I would like to one more that is lowering fps (capping it really decreases the temperature) so if you think you are good with 30fps(that's what most story games require ) then go for it
I write these on my MSi GE60 2PL Apache that I bought way back in December 2014. It's still my only computer. I work on it, watch tv shows on it and play games on it. Recently I completed Spider-Man Miles Morales. And Baldur's Gate 3 is fairly playable. Yes, graphics is on the lowest of the low, but still... 10-year old laptop being able to run anything modern deserves some respect.
To everyone suggesting repasting: I highly recommend installing the Honeywell PTM7950 pads instead. Paste lasts couple of months, a year max, the pads last 5 years. I installed my pads literally yesterday and my temps dropped by +20c, and that is before they "settled" (they gain maximum efficiency after a couple of cycles). Warning: the installation is a bit finnicky, so buy a bigger size just in case you screw up the first couple of times you try to cut it and apply it.
Good thermal pastes usually can last a few years, even. Some of them do cure way too fast. But yes, have handled 7950, can confirm they're really painful
@JarrodsTech I was just thinking today, it would be fun and entertaining if you made a video about USB-C charging. 60w, 100w, 125w, 160w? Is it safe? How should you configure your settings? What laptops can handle it, which ones should you avoid due to it degrading battery health. You could go down so many paths with it, and I have yet to see a video explain it all.
I have a Lenovo Z50-75 that still works and is sparkly clean inside (I run some old programs that are incompatible with newer windows versions on it when I need it), Have a four year old Legion 5 (2020), which I repasted with liquid metal and still rocks. Had the battery always at 60% charge, because most of the time it was docked. After 4 years it has only 52 cycles and 99% of life left. Gave it to my son. And bought the Strix G16 With the 13980HX and 4080 as a workstation/gaming laptop. Quite happy with that thing, that has desktop performance. Great for my work. So if you care for your things, they will serve you a long time.
What i do to preserve the cpu and gpu is limit the fps and undervolt it and where i can use the IGPU on the cpu to preserve the power. My laptop has freesynce so 40 fps for me is fine on story based games.
My last laptop a Dell XPS M1530 died at the mark of only 5 years in 2013 playing Starcraft 2 on a different screen via HD I cable and over supportive books (to always provide fresh air) keeping the temps below 80 degrees (Intel core 2 duo T8300 + Nvidia GT 8600M with 4gb of ram). Had fewer changes of thermal compound, and still died not sending anymore any video output signal. Was a 1000€ of the time (2008) literally useless. Use to clean it and maintenance the fans a lot. We don't make enough attention to the minimum expectation life of this products. It's just a bad joke @jarrodsTech please make more studies about units lasting best
Are rest of the specs a 1:1 match? You are not purchasing just the processor, Lenovo might have cut corners slightly here and there. 13th and 14th gen - there's hardly any difference. Also consider that 14900 HX is not comparable to 13900HX, it's more of a 13980 hx competition or upgrade.
I compared both in my area. Looks like they forgot to update the 13th gen pricing. They are charging more for 4070, same ssd, same ram on gen8 vs gen9. No, its like saying blowing air at a fan will damage a fan - the air will just go with the flow of the moving fans in your laptop. If your laptop's fan are not moving then that is a different story! For example when I clean my laptop fans I make sure to secure the fan in place with a tooth pick then shoot air into it to clear dust.
@@gc4924 hello thanks I just didn’t want to damage anything. I only run my cooing pad at about 3 quarter capacity and I can play for 2 to 3 hours and the gpu goes no higher than 60 so it really works well.
Hey, I saw some of your recent videos. They’re good but I’m still very confused. My budget is $4,000 or under and I don know what to get. All of the seem bad, I had my eye on the Lenovo i7 before your video. What is a good pc at that price point? Any advice would be appreciated.
I would also recommend to run it with as low power limits and temps as you can. Lots of recent laptops simply die because their power delivery components overheat. Running you cpu/gpu at 85-90C is not good as well. It is way harder to find a working 5-10yo gaming laptop with high-end cpu/gpu because of that. Don't waste power, limit fps if you don't need it to render at 200 fps, boost fan and etc.

My laptop is turning 6 years old and the battery lasted me 3 1/2 hours long on power saving mode. I think my advise is to keep your laptop plugged in unless using the battery is necessary. Modern laptops nowadays are smart to direct power directly to the system without touching the battery. I occasionally use the battery to keep the power cycled.

Forza Horizon 5 is a well optimized title that can even run on 10 year old potatoes. Bet you won't say the same result for actual heavy titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Starfield or Cyberpunk 2077. That 4th gen CPU is prehistoric in 2024 tbh.

Anyone had same problem or know the solution for this?
Test if the same thing happens to en external plugged monitor. If the monitor is going black the same way, it’s a problem with your GPU and maybe a clean driver install will help. If the monitor works totally fine, the problem is probably with your laptop screen itself or the connection to the screen.

@@nee172hello, legion y540 user here.. Undervolt is really worth it (if your system capable). My 9750h at full load was reached 95'C limit. After undervolting the cache -125mV and 225mV core, it only reach 83'C at full load. And got better benchmark score. Sadly no, Vantage cannot do undervolt, only power limit and fan profile (only with preset provided by lenovo of course). For undervolt you need Intel XTU or Throttlestop. And another sadly, from i understand, most 12th and 13th gen intel laptop cannot be undervolted except HX series (and K series for desktop). But you still can do thermal management using Throttlestop by limiting its power or clock speed. For example i have 4 profile in throttlestop. Each profile has different clock speed limit. From max clock speed (4.0ghz) to slow clock speed (3.4ghz) for quiet working. Also most laptop shared heatpipe between cpu and gpu. Reducing cpu heat potentially reducing gpu heat and vice versa. You can tweak both to create good balance. You dont always need max cpu clock for good fps, it's depend on the games. Most of the time i only use 3.4 or 3.7Ghz clock limit for gaming. Another thing you can do is to undervolt your gpu using msi afterburner. And using frame limiter (i prefer RTSS). For more these kind of knowledge i suggest reading throttlesop threads in TPU forum (i swear this is not ads😅, i don't even have account there). The creator of throttlestop, 'unclewebb', loves to spread his amazing knowledge there..
I still have my Triton 500 with the 2060 in it, still kicking and hooked up to my LG TV. I can still play most everything at 4k, 1440p, or very few needing to go down to 1080p. No need to upgrade yet!

PTM 7950 is amazing man
Your comment cuts off before you explain that you "repasted" with Honeywell pads. I would not consider this repasting, those are thermal pads
@@charno_zhyem First try then comment. Honeywell PTM 7950 is EXCELLENT

@@charno_zhyem its also called "repaste" for PTM, at least everyone in LaptopWiki Community in dc names it like it where i found out about it.

People just be turning off their computers and consoles while their game is running and their system is burning hot. You gotta close out the game and let your PC sit for a few minutes so it can cool itself. It will last way longer.
So, like a turbo timer?
Not true. If you turn off a machine, it begins cooling down, because it obviously isn't running anything anymore.
Next video can you talk about refurbished gaming laptops. The pros, cons & whether it's worth buying?
I would like to one more that is lowering fps (capping it really decreases the temperature) so if you think you are good with 30fps(that's what most story games require ) then go for it
I write these on my MSi GE60 2PL Apache that I bought way back in December 2014. It's still my only computer. I work on it, watch tv shows on it and play games on it. Recently I completed Spider-Man Miles Morales. And Baldur's Gate 3 is fairly playable. Yes, graphics is on the lowest of the low, but still... 10-year old laptop being able to run anything modern deserves some respect.

Depending on your laptops brand, some laptops have the option to stop charging at 60 or 80 percent. Asus has it. Idk about other brands

@Jorrods, Which laptop do you use for personal use? Maybe you should do a video on that.

Except, the gaming industry won't let you keep your rig THAT long. System requirements is skyrocketing like crazy 😅

Hey quick question, I'm getting Lenovo Legion pro 5i with i9-14900hx cheaper than i9-13900hx any reason for the 14th gen being cheaper??
Are rest of the specs a 1:1 match? You are not purchasing just the processor, Lenovo might have cut corners slightly here and there. 13th and 14th gen - there's hardly any difference. Also consider that 14900 HX is not comparable to 13900HX, it's more of a 13980 hx competition or upgrade.
I compared both in my area. Looks like they forgot to update the 13th gen pricing. They are charging more for 4070, same ssd, same ram on gen8 vs gen9. I configured a i9 14900hx, 32gb, 1tb SSD, 4zone RGB, 4070 and 240hz 100% sRGB display vs Ryzen 7 7745HX, 32gb ram, 1tb SSD, 4zone RGB, 4070, 240 hz 100% sRGB display.

Hello I purchased a legion 5 in 2021 after seeing your review. Absolutely love it. Recently bought a laptop cooler iets 500 works fantastic but someone has told me that it could damage the laptop fans have you heard anything could it be true? Would forcing air through it put load on the fans?
No, its like saying blowing air at a fan will damage a fan - the air will just go with the flow of the moving fans in your laptop. If your laptop's fan are not moving then that is a different story! For example when I clean my laptop fans I make sure to secure the fan in place with a tooth pick then shoot air into it to clear dust.
@@gc4924 hello thanks I just didn’t want to damage anything. I only run my cooing pad at about 3 quarter capacity and I can play for 2 to 3 hours and the gpu goes no higher than 60 so it really works well.

I think no. 6 would be cooling. A dedicated cooling fan can really increase the lifespan of your motherboard and fans.
undervolting would do better than that, directly reducing head and load on the motherboard without losing any performance.

I think stay away from the Zephyrus line; although the RAM is upgradable, half of it is soldered onto the board. Do your research.
Secret Tip: undervolt ur cpu / gpu if possible or lower wattage for not getting higher temperature that exceed 80°C
shouldn't be a secret though, more people need to talk about it
I would also recommend to run it with as low power limits and temps as you can.

Test if the same thing happens to en external plugged monitor. If the monitor is going black the same way, it’s a problem with your GPU and maybe a clean driver install will help. If the monitor works totally fine, the problem is probably with your laptop screen itself or the connection to the screen.

Ai audio track for hindi???????
i just realize you look like Paul Gilbert
Portuguese speaker here, the voice is so fast and high pitch its hard to keep up.
I still have my Triton 500 with the 2060 in it, still kicking and hooked up to my LG TV. I can still play most everything at 4k, 1440p, or very few needing to go down to 1080p. No need to upgrade yet!
