If you use notebook, then search and change the video card bios. If you use 95w, change to 115w and then undervolt it. This is free 5 to 8 fps, using the same amount of power. Tested and worked
Cleaning dust is so important really, difference I saw is the capability to run a game at 4k medium instead of 1080p low, just cleaned dust nothing else.
@Razermantis7649 isnt that bad for ur laptop? some ppl i know said if u accidently blow into the fans u can destroy ur motherboard coz the spinning fans generate electricity?
The funniest thing is when you get a new gaming laptop and play a game that is 10+ years old and ran perfectly fine on your old one. New games are rarely as good as the old ones.
The worst thing is playing a retro game(typically 15+ years) and they no longer work on your new system cause of compatibility issues without mods and fixes Or the game's pc port was just bad since launch, looking at you og dead space.
Haha same here! When I got my Asus GL502VT in 2016, I used it to play SimCity 4 (a 2003 game). Then when I replaced it with my current G513RM in late 2023, I’m using it to play Anno 1404 (a 2009 game)!
THIS! I was so happy lenovo had that feature included in their legion series. Especially since I keep my laptop plugged in majority of the time this is a HUGE hack to save your battery that I feel like not many people know/use.
Tip 5 is easily the option everyone should know. People should accept the fact they can lower the settings to get more FPS in modern games. Even on low settings, I think modern games look good.
@21backwards78 progression = move forward (positive) regression = move backward (negative) Windows updates sometimes straight up break your device. Just last month I had one that had my computer greet me with a black screen upon logging in.
I have the asus scar 3/ i7 9750h 45w tdp but burst to 60w/ rtx 2070 mobile 115w burst to 150w/ corsair vengeance 32gb ddr4 2666mhz/ evo 970 1tb nvme ssd/ i play red dead online 4k resolution ultra graphic settings at 60 fps avg.. dlss ultra looks amazing! I say fix the games... Red dead online proves it.. game is a masterpiece and imo still the greatest game ever made.. thx for ur astounding laptop videos.. i am in love w mine 4 years later.. repasting made a world of difference as asus thermal paste sucked..i highly recommend to anyone if they get a product from asus look at their thermal solution before using and repaste/repad as needed.. it was literally powder on the cpu.. i used corsair xtm 70 after cleaning.. what is your opinion anyone on xtm 70?
Hey Jarrod, just noticed that you added audio tracks to your videos with 3 more languages (Hindi, Portuguese and Spanish). I appreciate your efforts and commitment to bring Hindi as the third overall of your first selection of languages (second addition after Portuguese & Spanish from the Framework 16 review video) to have a DUB. If possible, please can you make a video on elaborating the method and procees you used to do dubbing in these 3 languages. It is sincerely appreciated. Thank you.
Hindi is done with eleven labs, it takes my voice and tries to make it sound the same. I pay for this service. The other 2 are provided by RUclips, but don't sound as good, but are free.
@JarrodsTech thanks mate really appreciate your effort to make content accessible to Indians who may find it easier to understand in Hindi (I can understand both so no worries)
My current gaming laptop (Asus ROG GL503VD, i5 7300HQ, 16Gb RAM DC, GTX 1050 4Gb, 512Gb M.2SSD, 1Tb HDD) is turning 6 this year. I am upgrading now but for my first gaming laptop to last that long, it's a testament that it's not just the quality of the laptop but TLC from the user as well. Also know the strengths and weaknesses of your machine and never push it to its limits.
I write these on my MSi GE60 2PL Apache that I bought way back in December 2014. It's still my only computer. I work on it, watch tv shows on it and play games on it. Recently I completed Spider-Man Miles Morales. And Baldur's Gate 3 is fairly playable. Yes, graphics is on the lowest of the low, but still... 10-year old laptop being able to run anything modern deserves some respect.
For me, tip 1 depends on the situation. Sometimes, new updates can cause errors and be more unstable than the old version. For example, I updated to the latest GPU driver last March and couldn’t share my screen via Discord and OBS. I didn’t know where the problem originated until I realized it was due to the update and rolled back the GPU driver.
Yes, true. My gaming laptop has a lot of stability issues with the latest Windows 11 24H2 update. Randomly freezing, games crashing, and during normal usage the cursor keeps freezing randomly. Even clean reinstall did not fix it. Rolling back to 23H2 made it work flawlessly again with no issues.
I love this video as I'm a definite fan of making a laptop last as long as possibly can. I don't see electronics as like buy the new phone every year by the new this every year I want mine to last as long as possible because I really feel connected to them. For instance, I literally just upgraded to a new laptop. I gave my old laptop to my son just today. Went from a 1660 TI to a 5070 TI. Haven't installed any games yet but I am wondering what the difference is going to be like it's probably going to be crazy. But I'm not going to lie, that 1660 TI worked me just fine still. I couldn't play certain games that needed ray tracing like Indiana Jones, but I played games like Star wars outlaws and Dune Awakening and helldivers just fine and they looked good still. So people thinking that you always need the biggest stuff is just crazy because the 1660 TI is ancient and it was still doing me pretty well
Go to settings -> system -> storage and delete all temporary files. Thats where stuff really builds up and slows things down. You'll probably gain gigs of space removing that stuff.
I would like to one more that is lowering fps (capping it really decreases the temperature) so if you think you are good with 30fps(that's what most story games require ) then go for it
@JarrodsTech I was just thinking today, it would be fun and entertaining if you made a video about USB-C charging. 60w, 100w, 125w, 160w? Is it safe? How should you configure your settings? What laptops can handle it, which ones should you avoid due to it degrading battery health. You could go down so many paths with it, and I have yet to see a video explain it all.
You can also install Linux (mint for example) for very old laptops when you just use ist for browsing the internet. even some games are running just fine.
Lol! I use the Ghost Spectre W11 with updates stopped until 2077! Drivers? Nvidia is usually crap with their new "game ready" drivers. Just use the one that fits your card and game the best. Making good money, Jarrod? 😋
Do you have any in depth explanation of Graphic drivers, why do we need it, what's the right one (if there is), what are the things we need to know about it. Thanks
Recent Nvidia 50 series driver issues having me questioning the advice to update the GPU drivers immediately. 576.02 broke Nvidia GPU temperature sensing on 40 series laptops like mine, resulting in a constant 2-3 watt power draw when before, it could drop to 0. Incidentally, HP updated its official Intel iGPU and Nvidia dGPU drivers for the first time in 8 months. I'm going to stick with those official HP drivers from here on out until I have a reason to upgrade.
I have an MSI GF63 with i5 gen 10 1650ti and 16gb ddr4 ram. I bought it since late 2021 and because this is my first laptop i wonder how long it will last. So far there's no major issues but im planning to start saving for a new laptop in 2028 after i graduate from college (hopefully 😂😂)
1-Clean your machine, make sure there isn’t any dust anywhere 2-Upgrade hardware if desired 3-Change thermal pastes off CPU/GPU 4-Reset your machine. Backup valuable files and install a fresh windows copy
Mine has still 1650 on it and still kickin. Just clean the dust andp repaste it every year not just the gpu and cpu but also replace the thermal putty on vrams and vrms. What is more impressive is the charging brick no maintenance always on the floor and soaking on heat but still works after 4 years 😂
What i do to preserve the cpu and gpu is limit the fps and undervolt it and where i can use the IGPU on the cpu to preserve the power. My laptop has freesynce so 40 fps for me is fine on story based games.
basically the summary of tip 1 and 4 is get linux if possible, that can literally restore older PCs/laptops to a usable experience (and it won't bloat as quickly as windows)
i have this laptop for a few weeks but 16gb of ram maxes out real quick with like 6 chrome tabs and 8 autocad drawings open XD i can upgrade to 64GB and get a 2TB ssd since the my uni gave me money to spend on my education, so i have to only pay £50 extra and i will be set for years i already do those tips without thinking (having issues updating gpu drivers tho) Edit: wow the nvidia app actually did its job not like the intel gpu app :O
My 1660Ti Legion 5 is still good for me. I don't play the latest games, I buy the ones that have been out a while now and on sale. And any e-sports game it still handles well.
Same here. I got a 1060 6gb dell g7 with 32gb ram upgraded from 8gb, 2tb storage, 8th gen i7. I can still play a lot of newer games. Cod 3.0, apex, etc etc... Playing older games like destiny 2 on high settings looks beautiful. I WANT to upgrade, but dont really NEED to lol
Same here with my 3050Ti Legion 5. I mostly play older games & e sports titles. It runs games like RDR 2 & God of War fairly well at med-high settings since I get around 60-75 fps & on most esports titles I play are always over 144fps since I play those at lower settings. One thing I've stopped doing that he mentioned was the driver updates, specifically graphics drivers. I recently had a weird issue like 2 months ago when I'd been updating drivers almost as soon as they got released & had some random artifacts showing up on my display after that update(i think it was a January update). I reverted my drivers & the issue went away & after reading through a few threads on different platforms I realised it's not always the best thing to download some of the graphics drivers too soon especially in my case where I don't typically play any of the newer games.
A man of culture! I have the exact one and you'd be surprised how well it still performs with many new games brother. Just needs a few tweaks. I'm currently playing Horizon Forbidden west with 50+ FPS with medium yo high settings. Such a BEASTLY laptop to this day! I'm finally getting ready to upgrade though, picking up the Strix 16 this month. Found one with the 4060 and 13650HX at a decent price.
Same, 1660 Ti, different brand. Just look what's still playable on a Steam Deck. In a way, mass gaming is still back with the venerable 1060 era and the 1660 Ti has more grunt than that. Allegedly things have moved on to 3060, but until mass hits at least 1080p 60fps Ray Tracing Ultra Cyberpunk 2077, the needle has barely moved. I thought we'd at least be 4k 120 fps mid by now. I feel like I'll be dead before that's mass adopted affordable, things are so slow.
I wanna know what's it like to reinstall windows on a modern laptop as I have never tried it, like some modern laptops have some specific features, some internal apps that it comes with that allows controlling our laptop further like changing RGB, overclocking etc etc, they also sometimes have some custom group policy settings and all... After reinstalling windows how do we get these back again?
My MSI GT60 is more than 10 years old. 2013. GTX 780M Survived windows 8 to 8.1 to 10 different major updates. A world tour on plane, trips on motorcycle and some party. Upgraded ssd's then ram with a total of 3 ssd and 1 hdd witch all working fine. But it seems i've been victim of programed obsolescence with the GPU die same year of the end of Nvidia Driver support in 2019. Only 6 years after buy and driver support. How strangely coincidental it is. Never less. Suceed to have some time on the integrated Intel graphic. Witch was able to Run Battelfront 2 in Multiplayer with some tweaks below minimum settings. Amazed "spare wheel" then i bought aliexpress a gpu then new compatible battery in 2020 just before covid started. Now in 2024 it runs fine and i did the second repast CPU and GPU. Ssd is at 84% life. For the dust you have to live in a clean regulated vaccumed place, far from carpet base floor and your fan wont get as dirty as you may think. I just cleaned mine twice in 10 years and it wasn't really dusty. I will do a video on my chanel
3:26 as a guy who got 3050 in 2022, my expectations didn't have the chance to go over 4GB 😂😂 though the card lacks memory its performance is actually great and with enough research i can even run both horizon and Odyssey with 63-58fps medium low settings
My last laptop a Dell XPS M1530 died at the mark of only 5 years in 2013 playing Starcraft 2 on a different screen via HD I cable and over supportive books (to always provide fresh air) keeping the temps below 80 degrees (Intel core 2 duo T8300 + Nvidia GT 8600M with 4gb of ram). Had fewer changes of thermal compound, and still died not sending anymore any video output signal. Was a 1000€ of the time (2008) literally useless. Use to clean it and maintenance the fans a lot. We don't make enough attention to the minimum expectation life of this products. It's just a bad joke @jarrodsTech please make more studies about units lasting best

@Eenbeenmaster I made a couple of videos and scheduled them while away on a trip to Japan for 2 weeks :)

My laptop has a 1060 and it's still rocking!
W
How did you make it last longer?
@hiromis3623 regular maintenance, and I assume that I cannot play the latest games there are still a lot of great older games!
@hiromis3623 most likely max ram and storage and thorough cleaning every 2yrs
Cleaning dust is so important really, difference I saw is the capability to run a game at 4k medium instead of 1080p low, just cleaned dust nothing else.
How does dust get inside?
This is the only thing ive never doner cause i dont know how to do it, should i take it to a professional?
@r4m0m777 can of compressed air easy at home fix
@Razermantis7649 isnt that bad for ur laptop? some ppl i know said if u accidently blow into the fans u can destroy ur motherboard coz the spinning fans generate electricity?
This is such a big fat load of BULLSHIT. Cleaning dust does help, but no way in hell is it making a difference of 1080p low to 4k medium

@zeifelI’m gonna be using my 2023 Legion 5i Pro to play Age of Empires 2💀
This is true.
Hah, except some new games like zero dawn or control. I use my 2022 laptop to play the tomb raider triology from like 1996 😂
Tip #6:
Cap the battery to 70-80% charge to preserve the life of your battery. Especially if you keep your laptop plugged in all the time.
THIS! I was so happy lenovo had that feature included in their legion series. Especially since I keep my laptop plugged in majority of the time this is a HUGE hack to save your battery that I feel like not many people know/use.
I can't do that with my Hp Victus
Asus has it as well, great feature
how
@soyrizzo seems it doesn't come standard in every laptop. Which one do you have?
Tip 5 is easily the option everyone should know. People should accept the fact they can lower the settings to get more FPS in modern games. Even on low settings, I think modern games look good.
Don't forget that sometimes updates introduce regressions instead
specially windows ones
What does regression mean
@21backwards78 what used to be working is broken
Decrease performance @21backwards78
@21backwards78 progression = move forward (positive)
regression = move backward (negative)
Windows updates sometimes straight up break your device. Just last month I had one that had my computer greet me with a black screen upon logging in.

Next video can you talk about refurbished gaming laptops. The pros, cons & whether it's worth buying?
I write these on my MSi GE60 2PL Apache that I bought way back in December 2014. It's still my only computer. I work on it, watch tv shows on it and play games on it. Recently I completed Spider-Man Miles Morales. And Baldur's Gate 3 is fairly playable. Always smart cap FPS to not overload laptop. It will run quieter, cooler and longer.
Rolling back to 23H2 made it work flawlessly again with no issues.

new laptop means binging your videos i guess
My Predator PH317-54VH with 240Hz display still rocks.

Secret Tip: undervolt ur cpu / gpu if possible or lower wattage for not getting higher temperature that exceed 80°C
waiting for your review on MSI Stealth 16 AI Studio!
Hi Jarrod, awsome content as always. 😊
Will there be a review about the lenovo legion 5i (2024) soon?

Undervolting and Overclocking If you know how to do it right is all you need. Rest regular maintenance is good enough

Very fun to watch in hindi 😂
i have this laptop for a few weeks but 16gb of ram maxes out real quick with like 6 chrome tabs and 8 autocad drawings open XD
i can upgrade to 64GB and get a 2TB ssd since the my uni gave me money to spend on my education, so i have to only pay £50 extra and i will be set for years
i already do those tips without thinking (having issues updating gpu drivers tho)
Edit: wow the nvidia app actually did its job not like the intel gpu app :O

@kiekeyz what price did you find it for?
I don't even have a laptop!
Great
- Get a laptop cooling pad
- Undervolt the CPU/GPU
Please compare 13700hx vs 13900hx vs 14700hx vs 14900hx
Is 5 years on the same windows installation a long time?
you can just install windows new but keeping all your files, I do this every year, its feature inside windows it self, you dot need to
You told in ine of the video to run games while on wall charger.
How will i disable my battery then?
Depending on your laptops brand, some laptops have the option to stop charging at 60 or 80 percent. Asus has it. Idk about other brands
Updating software made my laptop slower. OEMs do planned obsolescence.
😂😂 its 🤣🤣 just 😂😂 title
By reinstall windows he means factory reset right?
Hi. I'm from Philippines. And I wanna buy a gaming laptop. Because its so hard to find high end gamig laptop here.
Wow his AI voice in Spanish sounds interesting 😮
I think no. 6 would be cooling. A dedicated cooling fan can really increase the lifespan of your motherboard and fans.
Anyone know how to limit the charging to 80 percent want to save the battery, I have MSI center on the PC and window 11 please help 😅
will switching to linux will increase the lifespan ?
6. Watercool it ✌️
