- Hikaru Nakamura is a man of many accomplishments.
He drew the chess world’s attention to the United States by winning trophy after trophy throughout his career.
In 2003, he became a record-breaking grand master. He plays one of the most challenging games in the world at breakneck speeds.
And, most recently, Hikaru breathed new life into a game that has existed for nearly 1,500 years, by playing chess with some of the biggest streamers on the planet.
This is the story of Hikaru.

Wow. Thanks for this incredible video! It's mind blowing to look back on everything. You guys really pulled out some OG history and clips here. There's a ton of good and there's a bit of bad. I feel badly that the only clips of the Botez sisters make them seem like enemies. We all got really busy with the chess boom, and we weren't communicating as well as we should have been and there were some small issues. We all realized we just needed to sit down and talk to each other, and our relationship is now stronger than ever. They are doing a great job representing chess on Twitch, and I have nothing but respect for both Alex and Andrea and all they've accomplished.

Somewhere, Hikaru must be whispering: "but the king's gambit is a bad chess opening, why are they using that as title"

Hikaru is 100% the biggest and main reason why chess is becoming more and more popular. If he’s grabbing people like me to pay attention and suddenly find intrigue in learning a game I had absolutely no thought of trying to learn to get good at then there’s probably a million other people who actually know something about chess that Hikaru is really helping grow the game
yo honestly, the team behind these documentaries is fucking wild. These are literally the reason im subbed to this channel I dont even watch Esports

Trueeee
This type of documentary is the type that you can't find on tv.
Except the Mika Daime videos, they are a bunch of simps.
Hikaru is legit, the only reason I'm taking my time to play chess. No matter what other people say, I will always respect and thank him for continuing to not only inspire me to play chess, but also others to do the same.
Imagine playing an ancient game, so big brain, but also so approachable. And not wanting your game to flourish because "you mingle with the masses".
I've not been much in Hikaru's streams, but the clips and highlights show him as such a genuine guy who loves both chess and his community.
That's a guy you wanna hang out with, and play games with, even if he stomps you all the way down to bedrock. He's just a cool dude.
Hikaru's done some odds games and things with interviewers (like the one lady from the news crew they showed) and has thrashed them, without a major piece like the queen. It's kinda fun to watch them freak out at the end when he does.
yo why did they make the botez sisters look so mean, them and hikaru are in good graces
Yeah look at the pinned comment
they are actually pretty mean

After getting into chess Ive loved learning about the game. My top favortite chess players of all time are Bobby, Magnus and Hikaru
I love his presence on creating content online where most chess players don’t give back to the community like that. We do owe a lot to him and all that he does.
He is the man that got me into chess, in my eyes hikaru is greater than other chess players, be it magnus Or any other and it's not only about gameplay, his personality, the way he talks, the way he interacts with his audience is just lovable to me, and of course, his godly skills is just cherry on top.

I've been waiting for this at this channel, finally🤩
Looking from the outside in, it just seems like Hikaru is the villain you don't want to win, but ends up winning. And in my eyes, he doesn't seem like a villain at all.
Awesome video. I loved Queens Gambit, one of my favorite shows in the last year. Of course when I was a child my dad loved chess, so I tried playing. Even came to the school to play against other talented kids, learning I wasn't good at all and stopped playing lol. I do have a love for the game and would have a lot better understanding today than I did as a kid. Thanks for the info, I love learning about people like this.
You know Hikaru made it when he's featured on an esports channel
for me, he made it a long time ago. when he got a title at age 10 then at age 15. sure its mediocre at international level but for us normal guys those recognitions at a local level is huge enough.
no hate. u just make it sound like life is meaningless until only at youtube famous level. 😂
I mean he's already made it when he was a lot younger. But I guess in terms of the internet sides of chess he most definitely did
I guess you could say he made it in terms of fame and succees outside the chess bubble.
Well isn't chess basically an esport now?

@Anna Svidler Hikaru could actually probably win against magnus, he’s done it before.
@Anna Svidler the way you said it would be he hasn’t one against him once as you said “Hikaru can’t win against magnus”
@Anna Svidler Hikaru won full matches and tournaments against Magnus in the past. Yes, Magnus is better in every format (maybe except bullet where it's really close) - but he's definitely beatable.
As for that clip, pre-moving the entire game like that is impossible regardless of who's playing. It being Hikaru vs Magnus with borrowed clips makes it funny (and highlights their not-so-dead-serious rivalry), but it's completely obvious that it's fake.
Whoever thought of that title is a genius, nice job
Dude I watch u alot in the past few years and never knew any of this stuff bro ur a legend
And it is in this video that theScore esports fails to account for agadmator as a major influential force in bringing chess back into the limelight, particularly online
Obviously a lot of people helped in bringing back chess. This is just to center then documentary around the focus point, which is Hikaru.
it is the story of hikaru and what he contributed to, not the whole story of the chess renaissance, that would probably have to be quite a lot longer than 15 minutes

Sucks too because decent was the best comment, not because because Magnus meant Hikaru is only "decent" but to joke about their rivalry. Hikaru (and recently Wesley So) are the only people that really compete with Magnus in speed chess at this point.

as someone who doesn't know chess but got exposed to hikaru through ludwig, say what you want, but hikaru really spreads chess through interacting with big mainstream streamers (like xqc). because he collaborated with big gamer streamers, it brought chess to their viewers (like me) and then all of a sudden, chess gets recommended on youtube and you fall down the chess rabbit hole, whether slightly or deeply. he's a key person in spreading chess, and it works. otherwise my feed wouldn't even have chess on it. plus the fact that he's a gm and continues to blow people's minds really helps. like this dude will explain a position and i'll understand it but also be lost at the same time, it's great. he knows how to be educational and relaxed at the same time, this dude thrives in his niche. it's great to see.
