What a beautiful bowl. Wow! I’m glad to know that you are a perfectionist. You will never let a piece go even with the tiniest flaw. Anyone who gets anything made by you will know that it is perfect.
Jim, that is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us. Glad you guys had a good time. I’m sure you thought about your next projects, I’m ready. I wouldn’t hate it if you put one up every day.
Such a beautiful bowl made even more so with your hard work and perseverance. I'm one of your non-turning viewers and I really appreciated how you thoughtfully expounded for those of us who do not turn (3:43). Thanks a bunch.
Wowza! That is amazingly beautiful! The wood has beautiful grains that glow like gold! I love that bark on the edge of that gorgeous wood! Fantastic job! And, thanks for adding some color to your masterpiece!
What an absolutely beautiful looking bowl. You workmanship is awesome. The minimal bits of resin really set it off. The natural edge looks real nice. I look forward to your videos each week and enjoy learning from your turning. Have been playing with the idea of videoing my turning. Every time I go to get my go pro my son has flogged it to video his underwater diving. I enjoy listening to the voice over with you explaining what is happening. Keep it up.
You did it again one great looking bowl. Highly shiny finishes show all flaws. When you show it to the camera one can’t see any flaws. Either sanding, tool or finish flaw. Your an expert at shiny finishes. That’s impressive to me. I have used Osmo and I like it. I have not tried gloss yet or the Hampshire wax. Some day.
Amazing piece, Jim. If I didn't have a big, bushy beard, I'd have had to wear a bib while watching this video because of the drool. That wood is soooooo gorgeous. I'm a big fan of yellow birch anyway but that burl was spectacular. I make canes and walking sticks and absolutely LOVE yellow birch. When the finish hits the bark, it just glows. (In fact, if you find yourself not feeling rugged enough to turn a yellow birch burl in the future, I'd be more than happy to take it off your hands. LOL A lot of mighty fine handle material there.)
Wow! What a beauty that birch burl bowl is. Fantastic job and details on how you did it too. As far as gloss finishes go for me, I rarely use them on highly figured wood. I prefer a more almost matte finish. I apply maybe 5 coats though so it has depth. I prefer to let the wood speak for itself and sometimes the shine steals the thunder. The other issue with high gloss, for some people, is that it takes on so many surrounding reflections. So if the bowl is in a busy room, it's full of reflections and you can hardly see the wood. No matter the finish, that burl figure is awesome. Great job, Jim! Oh, and those 3M Scotch-Brite pads are so valuable for finishing. I keep plenty of them on hand.
@@SpragueWoodturning That's your signature then. Can't go wrong either way. Variety is the spice of life. How dull a world it would be if everything looked the same. The more books I read about the art of bowl turning, the less I agree with the content. Do it this way and not that way? Art is very specific to the individual and that's the way it should be. I always cringe when I see people start turning bowls from store-bought blanks. I personally love to design the bowl, etc. around each log. I love that part of the process and can't imagine it the other way.
I've got a birch burl in my "stash" but I've been reluctant to turn it because I've never turned one before. I might have to dig it out and have a second look at it now that I've seen this! Thanks Jim!
I love when an older video pops up. I feel like I'm getting a special bonus. Love the grain and the finish.❤
Awesome! Thank you!
