    裏切り (betray) works perfect for English! Being stabbed in the back means being betrayed.
    大切 (important) is sort of close. If a person gets the biggest cut of something, it can mean that they are the important person in the group that gets it! That's how I remember it.
    親切 (kindness) I remember because of the phrase 'a chip off the old block'. It means the son(or daughter) is just like their parent. A (切) cut piece (the 'chip') of the (親) parent (the 'old block') is the son or daughter. Since the parents(usually) are the 1st people that children learn what kindness is like from their parents example, I use this to remember that 親切 means kindness.

    裏切り reminds me a lot of "backstab" in its meaning!
    "it's a backstab" means "it's a betrayal" in english, too!

    This is interesting as always. I want to supplement that, 切 can go back to the Chinese origins, have other meaning of “close” , so it help to explain 親切。 we also say back stabbing in English mean betraying , exactly the same to 裏切

    I feel like the secondary meaning of 切 (セツ) is somewhat consistent, and only (or mostly, at least) appears in on'yomi words and compounds
    If this "other" セツ roughly meant "kind/gentle/dear" it would explain why 切ない (セツ ・ない) means "miserable, suffocating", and also why 大切 and 親切 mean what they mean
    Ofc this would look either obviously true or false to anyone who knows about the etymology of these terms, but I don't quite know where to look for 😔

    • @Toppogi-kanji
      @Toppogi-kanji  Месяц назад

      Thanks!!!
      You know very well!
      You are almost right in the sense you meant.
      In addition, "切" also means "to approach". (Not so commonly known...)
      So it's possible that that meaning might have something to do with it.

      Oh, it has certainly been a hot topic in Japan recently.
      For my part, I would like them to have some manners, but I think it is also a matter of not knowing the culture and taboos of the country.
      Maybe I will unknowingly come in contact with a taboo when I visit a country somewhere.
