  • Mullet fishing 12/27/2011 off Anna Maria Island, Florida. We were cast netting roe mullet about 1 mile offshore. There were about 5 huge schools.
    There are two types of roe mullet, red (eggs) and white (sperm). We sorted through and released the white roe mullet. The red roe mullet are sold to East Asian buyers. The back of the boat is filled with red roe mullet.
    We landed approx. 3,000 pounds of red roe mullet on this day.

    This video brought back memories of day I use to go mullet fishing before the net ban here in North Florida. I would go with several friends and we used a Airboat and search for a run of mullet then circle them with a long gill net and catch 100-200 .lbs every run. We used them for Church Fish Fry fundraiser and always sold out!

    mike and mac: hmmm...your sarcasm underwhelms me-lol...in defense of mullet: moved to bradenton, fl from santa barbara 9 yrs ago....ate all the fish that i caught off santa barbara--loved it...love all seafood.....then, discovered smoked and fried mullet in cortez, fl (star fish co.)....smoked mullet, hush puppies and cheese grits washed down with a cold beer on a hot summer day (or warm winter day)....yummmmmmmmm!!

    That's awesome! What folks don't understand is banning gill nets is what saved the mullet. A cast net is just a drop in the bucket.

    nothing wrong with this video. I’ve been vegetarian for five years, and I’m enthralled by videos like these because It feeds the population. I don’t eat meat because I don’t agree with the industry’s practices, but I’ve never had many problems with the fish industry. they throw the white out and keep the red to stabilize the population. One day I wish for a more sustainable future where we can be able to feed ourselves like this. I respect fisherman because these are one of the few practices where you go out into nature and hunt yourself, while cows, pigs, and chickens are domesticated and bred in captivity. Not much hunting going on lately, but I like fishing.

    Man i tell ya what..after reading some of these comments im now feeling so bad that my child has to be brought up in such a screwed up world...you see a net full of fish and you think its the end of the world yet you goto the store and buy cow meat by the pounds..mullet is a fish that is on every continent in the world..it is one of the best sources of omega 3s there is..the eggs are delicasies in the asian and south american markets..the majority of them are smoked or fried..most of the time if someone says a fish is a sopefish or real fishy its because theres so many that those who want them can easily get them..and using castnets sucks..when we throw a net we take every size mullet thats there..so it causes unwanted death to males as well as smaller females..using gillnets is the best source of management there is ...as its catching only the older females and letting all the other sizes swim thru...those who have negitive comments please unless you know what your talking about please just save it..and those that think that us commercial fisherman do so well please come join us for a day and see how much fun it is when mullet is only caught for 6 weeks a year..and unless you have other sources of income what you do in 6 weeks is the decision on wether your family eats all year...so cut us some slack and just say hey its not for me but thought id say cool video..or just goto whatever turns you on and watch it...ive never understood why people go to a video and just say the most ignorant ass comments...but then again thats why im not the one doing it...

      Never Mind im gonna try and explain myself a little better...First of all these are black mullet. none of which go from hear to the carolinas. Second, i wish I could only work 6 weeks out of the year. What your seeing happens 3 to 4 times a year. in that day the average boat catches 4 to 6k pounds. Now of those usually only half is females. so thats now 2500# the year of this video i believe the price was .70 a pound for the females and i dont think they even bought the males. so if 1400$ is what you consider a good living then good for you. Now please dont try and act like this is easy work..most of the guys only do this during the season and then go back to there jobs..myself i fished 21 years year round..And im more of a conservationist than you will ever be. most full time guys are very deendent upon the sea for our lively hood so when im guessing some sporty with a hat from the cca decides yall know what fish numbers are because you took a gillnet taken from us and took a sample..well your way isnt worth a shit..if it was jewfish would be off any list, as there killing every reef there is..Now if you want to question my intelligence with a comment thats fine..i have a double Bachelor's degree from the u of Missouri in Economics and Biology. I also am a ATP rated pilot with my private,ifr, commercial, multi and atp with a cfi, ii, and mei instructor adds..With over 4200 hours of flite time. I made 10 times more flying than i ever have fishing but I dont get motivated by money. However, of by chance you want to come out and let me fly you around our state ill be glad to show you what people with more smart than sence is doing to our waters dumping the everglades down south, or oilwells that they couldnt seem to screw a lid on..To this day theres fish that have a oily film on them...one look at that and i promice you the few mullet caught by us isnt worth talking about..if every human alive eat mullet daily you wouldnt put a dent in the mullet population....

      nevermind just curious if you have a job that pays you to watch utube all day and type a bunch of shit that didnt makebthe first lick of since.. I dont know the first person who comes to florida to catch finger mullet to smuggle back to the carolinas..They have there own mullet..And lastly a mullet isnt a fish...it has a gizzard...have a great day and hope you load your boat down with whatever brings you excitement...best of luck

    • @jimallen136
      @jimallen136 7 лет назад +1

      Never Mind ...First it is not a chicken, it has a gizzard therefore it could be considered a bird. Next Rick Scott and the rest of the folks including yourself that troll through utube videos just to make comments that are worthless doesnt mean there from missouri. I had a full ride scholarship offer to every Div 1 university in the country. I chose there to continue a family heritage of Mizzou grads. As for the rest of the snide remarks about myself or my education please save them for someone that gives a shit. Just curious as to why your even on this video anyways. Did you come to utube in hopes of learning how to catch mullet, or throw a castnet. If so maybe just say "hey guys if a man wanted to catch 500# of mullet what do i need. i promice you that you would get a responce. However, to act like we are killing off a species lile a mullet is just lack of any true knowledge. BTW my crew and I had 17000 in 4 days this week..so dont know if that makes you cry and want a hug but I slept well knowing thanks to the fine sea around me thT I wont have to worry about my families next meals or bills. But i did the rite thing and I didnt use these awefull castnets..I used 800 yadds of 4 5/8 100 mesh gillnet ..it was a site wosh you could have seen it...just like the googans that use circle hooks and caught everyone i had rite up bebind there eyeballs...

    Hawaiians have been fish-farming mullet for over a thousand years, and mullet ('Anae, 'Ama'ama) are considered a delicacy. Steamed mullet, and fried mullet are delicious. The eggs when salted and dried are called "Bottarga Di Muggine" in Italy, and grated over pasta dishes for extra flavor, and sells for over $100 a pound.
    Tilapia are considered trash-fish here in Hawai'i but enjoyed by millions on the mainland US. It all depends on your point of view.

    • @johnsims9907
      @johnsims9907 9 лет назад +2

      ***** Whoever prepared your tilapia didn't know what they were doing. They eat plants and have a lot of bacteria in their stomachs. If their stomach is punctured during cleaning the meat goes bad. If cleaned properly the fish tastes great.

    I personally fish for mullet and it's funny to see people trying to act like a know-it-all when they have no idea what they are talking about. For everyone thinking that it's illegal or they are throwing dead fish back, the fish are alive and it's called commercial fishing, the bag limit is not 100 fish. And no, the red row doesn't go for 8 dollars. All I know is that when we sell the fish, red roe is around a dollar per pound.

    • @jimallen136
      @jimallen136 8 лет назад +1

I know. .. cause I fished these waters for over 12 yrs. .. every year... commercially... it's an honest buisness. .. highly regulated by local wildlife officers. .. FWC..... Mullet have lately been used in restaurants in the US., They always had a bad rep as a trash bait fish, scaley, ugly.... and not fit for eating. That is VERY wrong. They can also be very sustainable in farming and feeding them as well. IT is done a lot in Spain.

    Mullet are vegatarians, so hook and line is not an option. Only way to catch them is to cast net. All I can say is this is how my family does Christmas. Hubby struck that last night with an equal 400 pounds of white. Late start this year in my neck of Florida....

    If you have had a smoked mullet ..you would not call it garbage fish.
    Small ones are delicious fried. Southern tradition.

    Strange how people are concerned about a sustainable fishery that is healthy and going on about the last tree cut etc. I guess you live in a cave and don't drive a car or eat any type of plant or animal to survive. But yet somehow you watched this video meaning that you used electricity and a device that was created from mining and raping of the earth you speak of.
    Sorry but until you stop leaving footprints on this earth quit watching the fishing videos we love and bitching about how someone else makes a living.

      canonphoto Not to mention your internet payment is contributing to digging up trees, laying wires, tons of fuel, trucks, chemicals you name it.
      You should probably cancel your internet.

    It's a lot of work.noone wants the white row so it takes a lot more cast.i had 2600 in 4 throws and almost half went back in the water because they were white row.they need to let the fisherman use the straight net at least then the smaller ones can go through the net.that was pretty stupid to ban the nets.the only thing you were allowed to catch before the ban was mullet / jack's . All the other fish like redfish / trout ect you could only catch a couple months out of the year. The fisherman got their livelihood striped away from them.
