This video is such a life saver!!!! I worked on my ‘19 Forester front differential last weekend and stripped the upper fill bolt; so devastated and came across this video!! I was able to fill the front via the overflow port; I bought few bags of Amsoil 75w90 which came in easy pour bag; I just held the bag opening against and overflow port and kept squeezing the bag...oil went in fine and I was so relieved!!!!

I figured this out also. After stripping the allen head in the fill plug. I used a funnel tie wrapped high in the right strut spring base. Overfilled it to 1.75 liters and let it all including the funnel and hose contents run into a clean empty pan. Measured that and it was right on the calculations of a proper fill. Dame concept in closed german and other transmissions. Great video.

The fill plug is indeed tight and very difficult to remove esp. if you use a socket extension - the extension would flex too much. Just use a hex socket and a ratchet - pull the ratchet from underneath the car. Mine came off quite easily, no stripping. 2017 Impreza @45K miles.

2018 Outback. After 3 hours of pounding the fill plug and spraying it, I was able to break it open using a short extension with the 8 mm socket pulling straight down on the ratchet handle between the case and the catalytic converter I tried long extensions, but that was too wobbly and I feared stripping the plug. I was able to use the fill plug hole and the same size hose from the top to fill the case. I put anti-seize on the fill plug washer before I put it back in. There's no way air can be coming out of the same overfill hole you're pumping fluid from like you stated. I think you're able to pump that gear oil in through the overfill hole because there's a differential breather port that allows air to escape as you pump in the fluid.

@@drumandlife1004 hey. You get the 3/8 id transfer pump and you also buy 1 to 2 feet long 1/2 inch ID tube and a 1/2 inch clamp. Then you insert the 1/2 in ID tube into the 3/8 inch tube pump and you use the clamp to tight it. That is how I have done mine.

Agreed. On the new Outback, the fill hole is accessed through the top of the engine bay. There is a black plug connected to a black hose. It has a rubber o-ring and pulls right out and you fill there. The hole on the bottom where he filled it is supposed to be open when filling from top and the excess drains from there. Idk why he prefers to do it this way when filling from the top is so much easier.

If you do fill from side, and as this video correctly shows, really there is no reason to, the overflow or the under hood pipe is fine, make CERTAIN you are on passenger side. There is a fill plug on drivers side that is for your CVT and you will destroy your cvt if you drive it with any gear oil in it.

If you do towing, hauling and you do a lot of driving replace your front and rear diff yearly. If you don't do any of the above replace them every 2 years or 30k miles. Front diff only cost you $25 and rear one will cost you $13 if you do it yourself. Always change your fluid earlier than manufacturer recommendation, then you can't go wrong. Also use Amsoil long life gear oil.

Fair warning about over tightening, over torquing the plugs! You are dealing with steel plugs and an aluminum case. Many have stripped the differential or CVT threads. I almost did trying to torque the front differential overflow tube plug to spec. Not worth it. Tighten enough and call it good.

@@rickt2419 Yo do not need to on these subarus. There is a separate overflow and separate dipstick level check port (in engine bay) either of which can be used to fill instead of side fill plug. 90% of DIY owners and probably 75% of shops will not touch that side fill plug.
the caveat about using overflow plug, and how it works being at bottom of diff case, sit that inide the diff that overflow is connected to a tube that rises to half the height of the axle boot. so if you use the overflow to fill you need to have a thin tube on your pump, and after some comes out, you need to wait to see if more burps and than see if it takes any more and repeat. You can do same with overflow open and fill from hood front diff dip stick tube. Given where the officials fill plug is most home mechanics are better off and can do a perfectly good job filing from one of the two alternates.
