There are officially 193 countries in the world today. Chances are, you don't know all of them, and chances are even better you don't know Timor-Leste (East Timor). A tiny, majority Catholic nation located right in the middle of the majority Muslim Indonesian archipelago, it became the newest country in Asia in 2002. But to get independence, it had to go through some real shiiiii...
I arrived there on the day of a solar eclipse. Outside of the rare Australian who got on the wrong flight to Bali, tourists don't come here. In fact, it's hard to even take out money. This was gonna be a weekend of adventure, and I had no idea what to expect. Enjoy the ride.

My father was Portuguese themself but they like Timor because its very a relax country, and many portuguese generation lived in Timor throughout the wars. he used to be the minister of foreign affairs you stood in front of my dad office. what a small world we lived in. my great grandfather used to fight the Dutch East INDIE those cannon and forts are all to keep the Dutch out.

Go search for a Filipino bangka or paraw canoe. it's the same as the Timorese canoe. The native cultures are very similar (same ethnic and linguistic origin). These are also all shared with Indonesia too. In the end, the differences are purely down to colonizer.. 31:25 Since you thought the only international flight was from Australia and you knew that the Indonesian part of Timor is heavily Catholic, I assumed that you went into East Timor from West Timor (Indonesia), right?
Then you should’ve noticed that the two (East and West Timorese) do share a lot in terms of culture, linguistics, ethnicity, and history. In fact, most native speakers of Tetun can be found in Indonesia, not Timor-Leste. So it’s not true that they’re distinct from the rest of the region, when Indonesia itself is so diverse and includes various ethnicities. It’s just like us in Borneo, where we share the island with Brunei and Malaysia and share a lot of things with the native Borneans on their sides.
Timor Lorosae is a beautiful country, and as a neighbor I wish them nothing but success. Hau hadomi o 🇮🇩 🍻 🇹🇱

I think you like history - two events that occurred in Timor Leste, both shameful for the countries involved. Balibo Five - 1975 when Indonesia was invading Timor the Indonesian military 'excecuted' five journalists - a mix of Australian, NZ and British. If that was not enough the Indonesian military executed another journalist by firing squad who came to Timor to investigate. No one was ever led responsible. 2004 and Australian Secret intelligence bugs listening devices in the Timor PM's office in order to get advantage in negotiations around rich oil and gas fields in the Timor basin. The politician who gave the go ahead to use covert devices was never charged, or even disgraced, and if fact become an adviser to Woodside Petroleum, he is now a very highly paid lobbyist. The whistle blower on the other hand was treated dreadfully. Sorry if this has ruined your day - It is not the doings of the ordinary people of each country.

Is the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro a copy of the one in Lisbon, or vise versa?

That small concrete bridge you walked over is a called the Pig Bridge and those trees along the waterfront used to full of rather nasty monkeys. I spent a few eclipses in Timor and the locals, who have firm animist beliefs alongside Catholicism are very superstitious. Eclipses used to bring about banging on metal power poles, belting of dogs and any other way that was practicable to make enough noise to scare the moon/sun back to shining down on Timor Leste.
