OMG, NO WAY you are in my country LOL I wish I was there with you I can tell you more interesting stories. My father was Portuguese themself but they like Timor because its very a relax country, and many portuguese generation lived in Timor throughout the wars. he used to be the minister of foreign affairs you stood in front of my dad office. what a small world we lived in. my great grandfather used to fight the Dutch East INDIE those cannon and forts are all to keep the Dutch out.

I am German currently live in Timor-Leste, and can say you just hit a very calm holiday to display Dili - it actually is a vibrant city. Timor-Leste has some of the most beautiful diving spots, the corrals here are filled with marine life. All kinds of whales passing the shore including Blue whales. Being a young and independent nation is a fragile endeavor and I sincerely hope the best for this country and it's people. They truly want to look forward and overcome the violent past. If you come here, pay some respect.

I just watched the recent Pope Francis mass in Dili which 3/4 of Timor Leste's population attended. Whilst many readings were in Tetum, the formalities of mass and Bible readings were all in European Portuguese. So I assume most of the country understand Portuguese even if they don't speak it.

@@steveboy7302 I can see you know nothing about either country. both are Austronesians ethnically. Both speak Austronesian languages. Many cultural similarities from before colonization. You average day to day life for the average Filipino and Timorese are exactly the same. The surroundings and environment and local tech ologies are shared because they share the same origin. Go search for a Filipino bangka or paraw canoe. it's the same as the Timorese canoe. The native cultures are very similar (same ethnic and linguistic origin). These are also all shared with Indonesia too. In the end, the differences are purely down to colonizer.. And whether one is Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or full on follows the ancestral Austronesian belief systems shared by them all. At a base level, all 3 groups are very similar.

31:25 Since you thought the only international flight was from Australia and you knew that the Indonesian part of Timor is heavily Catholic, I assumed that you went into East Timor from West Timor (Indonesia), right?
Then you should’ve noticed that the two (East and West Timorese) do share a lot in terms of culture, linguistics, ethnicity, and history. In fact, most native speakers of Tetun can be found in Indonesia, not Timor-Leste. So it’s not true that they’re distinct from the rest of the region, when Indonesia itself is so diverse and includes various ethnicities. It’s just like us in Borneo, where we share the island with Brunei and Malaysia and share a lot of things with the native Borneans on their sides.
Timor Lorosae is a beautiful country, and as a neighbor I wish them nothing but success. Hau hadomi o 🇮🇩 🍻 🇹🇱
