It all depends on how much he wants. This is eerily similar to St. Louis's situation, and they let him walk. This Tampa team needs to reload and can't afford to give Stammer a big contract if it means scuttling changes to get the last few players needed to get this team back to the playoffs; don't want to end up like the Leafs with too much cap space eaten at the top and nothing left for the bottom.....

I graduated high school June 1st of 2004 and 6 days later I was outside the arena with thousands of fans watching game 7 against Calgary on the parking deck wall via a projector. It was awesome. Took a while to get back to the finals and even longer to win again but the core of Hedman, Stamkos, Kucherov, and Vasi have been so much fun to watch the last 10 years. Absolutely. The rules as is are intended to reduce grey areas in interpretation of the rules. You can't be on top of the goalie or making contact in the blue paint and expect your goal to count.
If the rules are changed to make goalies have to fight more for space and positioning in the crease then teams will do their best to take advantage of that and you'll get a lot more situations where it comes down to a ref's interpretation of the rules. Rules in sports are always best when they are black and white, it's when grey areas get introduced to rules that you end up with controversial situations where one night the goal counts and on another it doesn't.
Tampa just needed to stay out of the blue paint on those goals and it's possible at least one goes in and potentially changes the outcome of the game.

For the two disallowed goals which are very questionable to me, it leaves a sour taste even though Florida was the better team in this series and deserved to go through.
As for the future, Tampa in last year playoffs and in this year was forming new defensemen younger who were a lot less experienced and it showed in terms of the amount of turnovers. That being said, Lilleberg (23), Crozier (24), Perbix (25) and Raddysh (28) have all learn to play better hockey and reacted well under pressure so no matter what happens with Dumba and De Haan, Tampa's future on the short term is set at the defense and we can expect these guys to get more responsible as they get more ice time and learn. A year without any new acquisition at the defense and without too much injuries in which these guys could just play together and learn from Hedman Sergachev and Cernak would help and would stabilize the defensive play. The transition following the departures of Bogosian, McDonagh, Cole and Rutta took time but I feel like will be completed next year until Hedman leaves which is not for now.
On the offensive side on the other hand, this is where the Lightning have to make the transition. Point, Kucherov, Cirelli, Hagel, Paul are staying no matter what. Stamkos I think will finish his career in Tampa. It's the other 6 for the next 3-4 years which is concerning. If Duclair wants to stay, Tampa would keep him. But the thing I'm still not seeing is which young players can replace in the lineups the Killorn, Palat, Perry, Maroon and Bellemare that played a great role in the Lightning two stanley cups. Motte is playing great, Glendening why not. But where are the youngers guys on which you're counting, they're lacking. Tampa will have to adjust its offense in the next 2 years, hopefully, after this reset, they might be a bit competitive. They're clearly going for the Boston method and not for the total rebuild. The thing is that the Atlantic division will just become more and more competitive. Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa, Montreal. A lot of young good teams with a bright future in front of them. You look at the other teams, Boston, Toronto and Florida which are all playing exceptional hockey, you have to expect Tampa to be out of the playoffs in no time if some younger players don't come around helping Tampa score some more goals

As a bolts fan of 22 years (that I am old enough to remember), I really feel like Kucherov might have cost this team at least a game 6 if not maybe even a game 7. It felt throughout this series, but especially in game 5, that Kucherov's "decision" to chase 100 assists* may have had an impact on his goal scoring. Several times especially in game 5 he had rush opportunities that old Kuch would've blasted at the net but instead he would spin, hesitate, force a pass, and then turn the puck over. The few times he did actually shoot he missed excellent shots from the slot and down low in the circle which has always been his sweet spot. It looked like that choice* to focus on assists may have at least made it easier for FLA to blanket him and led to him getting frustrating much easier and ultimately having a goalless series. I also feel like Kucherov's antics both after the cup wins and the whole all-star competition, did paint the TBL organization in a bit of a negative light. All of that being said, I do think Stamkos returns on a very team-friendly deal so he can stay in Tampa until retirement. However, purely based on value to the organization and leadership, if Tampa can't find a way to resign Stamkos I'd rather sell off Kucherov and then look for some better fwd and def depth to make Stamkos' return worthwhile. Likely an unpopular opinion, but Kuch does have a 10-team no trade and considering his antics and behavior I really wouldn't be surprised if he waived it anyway. He is seemingly more focused on stardom than winning as a team.
** chasing 100 assists: The stat line eludes it is at least a possibility... before February he would frequently have multi-goal and multi-assist games and averaged around 6.5 SOG per game. After Februrary his goal scoring dropped to single goal games and only recorded a single multi-goal game (2 goals) after he added a hat trick in mid January. His SOG also dropped, averaging around 3 SOG with numerous single shot games in that post-January stretch. Meanwhile, his assist production obviously skyrocketed with 19 multi-assist games in the last 40 games, when he only had 9 in the first half of the season.
TLDR- The stats would show Kucherov focused on assists in the 2nd half of the season, sacrificing his shot in the process which MAY have made it easier for FLA to hold him goalless in the series and led to lots of frustrations and missed shots from the lightning's top producer. IMO someone so focused on their own stardom has no space to call themselves a leader in this organization.

We are all hoping he stays in tampa cause the guy is the heart and soul of that franchise who single handedly revived them when he first got there in 2008 and quickly established himself as one of the most electrifying goal scorers all time and one of the best captains all time who essentially turned them into a dynasty between 2015-2022 with 2 cups and 4 cup finals and presidents trophy. He's a guy who deserves to play whole career with just 1 team. Stamkos had 40 and 41 this year in 79 games. Hes still a #1 center and he should get 8mil minimum. One of the most underrated #1 picks of the 2000s. 60 goals, above a ppg in his career. 5 cup finals. 2 cup wins. Really lucky to watch that guy play.

    • @ethanparker7900

actually 4 cup finals not 5 although I firmly believe if they had won game 7 of the conference final in 2016 instead of pittsburgh to make it 5 cup finals, they prolly would've won the cup and then it'd be 3 cups. And i would say maybe $6.5-7 million cause ofc he's getting up there in age but is still producing. He frankly should've been the Ted Lindsay Award in 2012 over Malkin. I agree on Malkin getting the Hart trophy after crosby missed most of the 11-12 season absolutely I was very glad he got that award but Stamkos should've had the Ted Lindsay after putting up 60 goals on a mediocre team in my honest opinion. Guy yah is the 2nd best goal scorer of his generation and I would say top 20 goal scorer all time and top 100 player all around all time with a 60 goal season and with a career average of around 40-45. Quite impressive even after a couple significant injuries along the way

    3 options here:
    - Stamkos gets all $ but won’t have a cup winning team.
    - Stamkos get turned down and is traded.
    - Stamkos takes a pay hit but has a better team to hopefully win the Cup.

He's not leaving Tampa. Infact I would expect him and Hedman to get extensions through at least 28 - 29. They are clearing retained trade salary and a bunch of LTIR this summer. I'd expect Conor Sheary to be bough out as he was a horrible fit. Maybe they move Cernak and retain some salary since he's been injured and ineffective. Depending on how the Crunch do this post season we could see a 2015 youth movement type of team to give the Bolts some speed. In such a case they can likely be relevant for 4 more years at least. They start to get more draft active in 2026... if no more picks get traded... which should help with a rebuild scenario by 29-30. Then the opportunity opens up for Point, Kucherov, and Sergachev to take the reigns with the hope they resign soon after.
Definatly a path forward here and ownership understands part of filling the building each year is having a playoff or cup capable team. If it takes buyouts or salary retention they will make it work.

I think the reason goalie interference has to be called as such, is that if there's a certain level of contact a goalie is expected to fight through, It would be hard to determine how much. It would end up being rather subjective ( more so than it already is) and we need to remember that Goalies are a non-contact position, they cannot be expected to engage in any sort of contact. " Fighting through a screen" means what exactly? Retreating deeper into the crease? Goalies aren't focused on their positioning on another player, they're focuses on the puck.

They're entering a decline phase that all championship teams eventually go through. The Lightning will probably still be good enough to make the playoffs in the next few seasons and may even win a series, but it's only going to get harder for them to contend for a Cup as other teams continue to improve and as their star players age out of their careers.
