How to upgrade the PS4 with a SSD - HyperX

- This guide will walk you through replacing the hard drive in your PS4 with a faster SSD, allowing for faster loading times. In order to replace the drive you’ll need the following tools:
• An SSD
• Small Screwdriver
• USB Flash Drive to install the OS from
• External hard drive for backup of existing game data (optional)
• A USB SATA enclosure for the hard drive, included with HyperX SSD bundle kits (optional)
Installation steps:
1. If this is not a brand new PS4 and you have saved games on it that you want to keep, back up your data first. You will need an external hard drive that’s big enough to hold all of your data. You can connect it using the USB SATA enclosure included with HyperX SSD bundle kits.
2. Slide open your case, unscrew the hard drive and replace it with the HyperX SSD.
3. On a computer go to www.playstatio... and download the PS4 system software under the “Perform a new installation of the system software” heading.
4. Copy the installer PS4UPDATE.PUP to a USB drive. Place it in a folder titled UPDATE which is in a folder called PS4 (PS4\UPDATE\PS4UPDATE.PUP)
5. Eject the USB drive, connect it to your PS4, and install it to the new SSD.
6. Restore all your old games and files from the hard drive in the external enclosure you back up the data to in step 1.
Cool, now that I know this I just need to buy a PS4 and a SSD.

If you’re doing this in 2020 you can backup n restore all you saved data to ps plus if you’re a member. and you can re-download you’re games from your Library once you sing in. Saved me 8 hours and $80 on an external hard drive

Wait, maybe I’m asking a dumb question but, but since you have a SSD now and don’t need to buy the external drive how do you acquire the latest update part?
Live To learn I don’t know what you mean by update part. If you’re asking how to keep your ps4 up to date, you just simply do what you did before ssd. Just keep it on auto update. And your ps4 will automatically downloads the latest software when available.

Great video guys, you missed out the section where you spend 30 minutes looking for a screwdriver, the 10 seconds in which you accuse your wife of misplacing it and the week you have been sleeping on the couch since you found it in the shed, the first place she told you to look when you embarked on this project. @@uwushortsxd for gaming there's hardly any difference. Modern games cannot make use of Nvme yet. Maybe in 2025 they'll be a thing, but for now SATA III SSDs are fast enough

You need the 'PS4 Consoles reinstallation file' and NOT 'PS4 console update file'.
This caught me out, hope it doesn't catch you too!
NOTE TO EVERYONE when you first plug in the External HDD DO NOT format it as "Extended HDD" if you do by mistake go to System>Devices>USB HDD select the External HDD your wanting to use and press Options on control and format it as exFATT (i think thats what it says) then proceed to to System>Back up & Restore then you'll be able to backup data on the External HDD

Random - he is talking about the speed, Sony said that the PS5 would be much faster, they tested losing some sort of program on the ps5 and it took 0.8 seconds while they used the same program on the PS4 it took 8 seconds. In conclusion the ps5 is 10X faster than the PS4
The ps4 is bottle necked even with an ssd, they will load faster with a ssd, but it is a very minimal increase in speed. I put a ssd in mine and was disappointed.

Before upgrading to SSD, you must backup your savefiles and data.
Small details: your new HDD or SSD needs to be FAT32. Your external storage device (Pendrive) you update the system from also and not supposed to be bigger capacity than a certain size: First I tried 128 GB pendrive but my PS4 did'nt see it. Than I tried 4 gig pendrive and all went like charm.

Great video but you forgot to mention that you have to Format your flash drive to be FAT32 before creating the PS4 and UPDATE folder. It wouldn’t detect my flash drive until I did this.
I'd like to thank you for showing me step by step how to upgrade to a ssd hard drive.youve helped cut.down on my loading screens by more than half. Just upgraded to the Crucial MX500 for $90 compared to the $150 Samsung 860 Evo for same size buy the speeds are benchmarks as 4x faster from other comments I've seen with images.

You dont really need to back everything up to be honest
If you have ps plus, just back up all your game saves to the cloud (USB stick if no ps plus) and then install ssd. You can redownload all discs and games anyway

I play PC for gaming. But I also grew up on consoles I still got love for them just not for what they have become when it comes to straight gaming. But I will say can't wait til next gen consoles to come when the jail breakers put in work. Then can mod the PS4 to add to my 3tb modded original Xbox, 4tb Wii, 13tb ps3. Still need to JTAG the 360.

Hi Folks. I did exactly what you said in the video, step by step. With the Playstation 4 console turned off, and the new SSD hard drive installed, I inserted the jump drive with the latest .pup file inserted into the USB slot. I held down the power button on the console for 7 seconds and heard the beep. Then the screen came on in SAFE MODE and asking me to 'Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 using the USB cable and then press the PS Button'. When I do this and press the PS button, the controller flashes twice and stays off and nothing happens on the screen. Cant get past this. The SSD drive I used has a windows operating system installed on it. Will the PS4 console format this to FAT32 automatically or do I have to format it manually first before physically installing it in the console ?? I'm at a loss here. HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

It only works to a certain firmware version. Like with the ps3. It matters what firmware it had when produced too.

Also I upgraded My PS4 with a sandisk 1 TB SSD and it is really fast so recommended to upgrade

I was going to do this back in 2016 but they only had 240gb ssd’s. Now that they are available and more affordable for a 1tb. It’s time.

Correct. You get almost no gains over a 7200 RPM HDD or a SSHD. You're spending way more per GB to get the same gains.

I don't think you would really see much performance gain since the PS4 only uses SATA2, Plus a 2TB SSD would cost you the price of an additional PS4 pro.

SSD gives a massive gain to any sata2 PC and device. Max transfer speed isn't the biggest reason why SSDs are so fast.
I bought a 2T for 100$. Plus, you can alway remove it and use it else were.

exclusives, I'm pretty much "forced" to buy a ps4 because there are just too many games coming I'm not willing to miss out on.
Because a ps4 is much easier to play than pc. I find it a chore to turn on my pc and play a game. Thats why i play my ps4 more.

With consoles I just feel like im restricted you can't really customize your console all that much.

Zeppo i do play pc from time to time but ps4 more. i realise i can do so much more with a pc but i like things simple. its easier to just jump on and invite my friends to a party and play. and if i want to listen to music i can use spotify on my phone and tell it to connect to my ps4 without having to actually do anything with my controller btw. its all just preference at the end of the day.

I should've thought of that back in the late 2010s. I have the standard PS4 since Christmas 2015. If I should've known about Solid State Drives at the time, I've would've bought a 1TB Solid State Drive because I would run out of room on the standard 500GB hard drive years later.

Sony should have gave ps4 a Huge hard drive not 500GB that was way too small and even 1TB isn't big enough. Sony made the gamers pay the money for bigger storage! Sony knew from the start games would take up at least a hundred GB like Red dead redemption 2. Sony conned the ps4 gamers and Microsoft too.

To avoid all of this back and forth why not just remove the PS4 HDD, plug it into a Windows PC and just clone that HDD to a new SSD using Acronis??? It would be a one step process and once that's done you just put in the new SSD into your PS4!

This is ultimately pointless and a waste of money, the PS4 has a SATA2 port, which can't take advantage of an SSD. Save your money and buy an SSHD instead.
