'does anybody's heart just sink at the sight of a basic even though you kind of know that every now and then you do need a basic' I have never felt so seen in my life
For that blue dress with the missing button, you can move the top button down and either leave it without a top button or add a statement button at the top. It would probably be easier than changing the neckline
rescuing all the stray thrift items 🙏🏻 I tend to feel the same but yes it’s a good reminder that, while saving items from the landfill is great, it’s also ideal for these pieces to be well-worn and loved rather than hiding in a corner of our closet lmao
With so many people flipping thrifted items as a side hustle, unless your taste is so unique or esoteric or whatever, it's likely someone else will buy it.
I appreciate you saying: "just because I get rid of [fan tee shirt] doesn't mean my interest in it is diminished" because I have a ton of fandom tees that I just don't wear but can't bear to get rid of
‘I’m too busy to babysit this dress while I wear it’ was such a mind changing statement for me, like hell yea the dress is the problem not my body, seeing the dress as bad rather than me as bad is the mindset I want to have!
That black dress/gown looks gorgeous on you! I applaud you for wanting to get rid of anything that you won't be wearing in the next few months. BUT! That being said, as someone who works retail, I have seen too many folks panic at trying to find a formal and flattering black dress under a time crunch. Having that in your closet will mean you're always ready for surprise formal events that come up on your calendar quickly and then you won't need to go out and buy one that might not feel as empowering.
I can’t tell you how many times in my 61 yrs of life how many times I’ve been relieved that I did in fact, have a good black dress to wear to a funeral. I usually have at least 1!
You could totally wear that black wrap dress with statement earrings but practical shoes, like birkenstocks, and go for "someones funky aunt reading in her garden" vibes
How you feel about second-hand clothes is how I feel about plants for sale outside supermarkets (dunno if that's a thing over there, though.) Like, I know I have twelve other ferns, but if I see a sickly one outside a store that I know will just be tossed out at the end of the day like garbage, then I'm about to have thirteen ferns.
Keeping some of your most loved pieces by your side while clearing out and putting them on periodically to remind yourself what an actually loved piece feels like is something I have discovered some time ago, and it WORKS LIKE MAGIC. I often get caught up and can't distiguish what isn't my style anymore when clearing out some beloved pieces from the past, and this is always so helpful!
That black dress you feel is too grand is perfect though? Wap on a colourful fabric headband, some statement earrings and either some sandals or some colourful Doc Martens and you’re good to go any day any time
It's weird how we have entirely different tastes, as in I would have done the exact opposite of you on most items, yet every time you made a decision it felt absolutely right. The clothes you loved just gave you such a happy vibe it completely overcame my own fashion ideas.
In the sewing community people often say that their first hobby is sewing and their second and third hobbies are collecting fabric and collecting patterns. It's a truth.
Please, why did you have to remind me of my fabric collection 😲 And then sitting in front of a fabric that you had for 10 years, not able to give it away because surely the perfect pattern or idea will soon cross your mind. Even though this clearly did not happen in the past. 🙇
this really hits the niche of fashion of "unicorn barfed on you" aesthetic, which is my aesthetic in a world of neutrals, beiges and singular pop of colour
"It's illegal to be naked and I do need to consume food". I feel I need this on a jumper. Or several jumpers all slightly different but really the same
My clothing issues include adding every t shirt and jumper I don't wear to my "sleepwear" collection and still not wearing them because they were never comfy and tie dying everything badly and not wanting it anymore but feeling attached because I paid for the dye
Maybe one of the biggest adult lessons of my 30’s has been understanding and accepting that liking a thing (clothes, art, etc), does not mean it’s my style or fits my lifestyle. RIP clubbing dresses, LBD, excessively high heels (so we see a theme?)
Oooh yes! The "might need this for a formal job interview" clothes are the worst! Like, I hate classic button up shirts (esp. in white) and blazers. Why can't I let them go?!? Hope it went better for you!💕
Me, a minimalist who fond of basic clothes and colours, watching Leena getting rid of almost every usual or/and black piece: "So boring, so pathetic, throw it away"
I'm Floridian and your fancy presenter dress is absolutely something you could wear every day where I live. People here wear that kind of thing to art fairs, on dates to restaurants and even grocery shopping. Definitely recommend some flat sandals for super casual looks with fun earrings and maybe bangles
I owned the same red floral skirt! I had completely forgotten about it but seeing Leena reminded me that I wore it on my honeymoon in Italy. We walked around Milan all day in the sun, ate gelato and drank beer. It's our five year anniversary next month :) I hope my skirt brings whoever it went to in a clothing swap as much joy as it brings Leena!
I haven't even noticed the thing with the sheering on the long blue dress. I think that shows that we overthink a lot when in fact ppl don't even notice that much. You look stunning in it 😍
I love that leena's videos cater to the viewers with bad attention spans: the clever zooms, stock video footage, fun images on screen. It makes watching these videos a joy (and most likely ups the viewer retention which the algorithm overlords should love! :D) Also! When she does outfit changes in videos (e.g. The Women's Prize Longlist video) that fit the theme of what she's talking about it bring me so much joy.
For the blouse missing a button- just change all 3 buttons! Gives new life to the blouse also so you’re excited to wear it ☺️ Fab video I feel so inspired
I audibly gasped when I saw the black dress on you. that dress looked stunning and it made you look so classy and sophisticated. I think it would look great with colorful sandals. nothing wrong with looking like you're buying groceries on your way home from an award show. absolutely love you Leena
you know what? i'm gonna go put on a fancy blazer right now because life is too short to "save" fancy clothes for "the right occasion" . and also it might help me focus on work if i feel like an important person rather than an exasperated student stuck at home
I started wearing make up and nice clothes to do my research, take classes, etc. last year, and it helps motivation even if you don't get out of your house for several days (my case since last year bc third world country Covid sucks). Do it! Also care for your clothes! Just frolicking around in socks and heels feels good too 💕
With the black spotty top that has a tight bottom: If you have the time you could unpick/ cut off the bottom and attach elastic the bottom instead! There are plenty of tutorials online with different ways to add elastic to skirts which will work for the bottom of a top. I'm currently going through loads of my old clothes and reworking them so I have cool new items!
Would love to hear some tips about charity shop shopping. I find it super overwhelming and always leave without finding anything - but would love to shop secondhand more often.
Aw that's a good shout - I have a video coming up on depop tips, but maybe after covid I'll do something about encouraging people back in to the charity shops!
Especially in pandemic times but also before I shop almost exclusively on Vinted. It feels like shopping on asos or zalando, in the sense that you can filter by all sorts of categories and hunt for something, or just scroll down the homepage
This has been WONDERFUL I am in the midst of slowly working through my wardrobe and removing the many, many items that no longer fit me. I've been guilty of keeping so much of it, thinking I can tailor it or make something new. But realistically, like you said, much of it is well beyond my seamstress abilities. I'm allowing myself to keep a handful of items I really love that I believe I can revive, and the rest is going back into the world.
I love that you actually got rid of stuff lol I hate watching these and the person says "I never wear this but I'm keeping it." I need to be inspired to take a realistic look at my wardrobe
Good lord, this video has been the most relevant and helpful closet decluttering video I've seen, possibly ever. Many of your thoughts and justifications truly resonate with me and many of the semi-neurotic reasons I hold on to the clothes I never wear lol. Hearing someone else going through the same thought processes and still sucking it up and letting go is liberating. Thank you 💜💜💜
“Is this against everything I believe in?” Literally exactly how I feel about basics. Does my plain black long sleeved top spark any joy? No. Will I eventually need it? Absolutely.
Already that stock footage use at 0:33 is just delighting me haha. Your videos always manage to be equal parts thought-provoking and incredibly entertaining 💫
oh i'm glad you mentioned the fear of needing clothes and somehow not having access to clothes hence stocking up in advance. i feel like while the pandemic has allowed me to streamline certain aspects of life...it's made me worse about clothes because i'm hyperaware of any changes in my body (minor or major) and this in turn causes me to fixate on fit and comfort and presentability. at one point i bought two pairs of the same kind of pant in two different sizes "just in case," even though this was arguably not necessary. i also bought dress pants (??) for whenever we go outside again and need to wear pants that aren't flowy linen or sweatpants. that was six months ago and i have not worn them once. definitely going to go through the closet soon and donate things or give them to friends.
No chance expressing how much I love the fact that you kept the playing dress up dress 🥰 we used to have a very old chest with stuff like this. I kept an elegant purse of my grandma.
I know this was posted more than a year ago but top tip on missing buttons for clothes you really love otherwise: just buy new buttons and switch out all of them on your dress. You can keep the existing buttons in a little jar for future sewing projects!
‘Mustard is not a depleting resource’ 😂 I need to think more like you, I’ve definitely got so many clothes that I just like the colour of or the idea of but never ever wear
An idea with fancy clothes is to wear them for sit down videos. That way you get to feel pretty and dressed up but still comfortable. So many of your dresses had really cute top halves!
for the dress at 27:10, have you thought of taking off the top button and reattaching it where the middle one was if you can't find the third button? i did this to a pajama top a while ago and it stopped me from getting rid of it : )
Dress at 27:27, take the top button and sew it where the second is supposed to be! I've lost a few central buttons and found repurposing the top button (which I rarely use anyway) has been a life saver.
14:30 I HAVE A CURSED SKIRT LIKE THIS 😂 I've been planning to switch the snaps to real buttons..... We'll see if I even get around to it haha. I need a declutter video like this for my sewing pile 😅
I laughed when you put on the black basic and was bemoning it sparking no joy, because i looooovvvvvveeeee a nice fitting black long sleeved shirt so much I would wear it in every outfit. :D
You look soooo good in the black dress up or down dress 20 mins in! If you could replicate the style and use it's pattern pattern to sew out of a different material, it would be so worth trying in a vibrant and happy print like you usually wear.
I also pretty much exclusively shop second hand and I felt like you were speaking directly to/about me with the scarcity mindset/sentimentality behind "saving" really cool pieces from thrift shops... I acquire and keep too much because I want to save and love everything forever! ...When you popped the Angels and Airwaves tee on and talked about not needing to wear the thing in order to keep loving it- I NEEDED TO HEAR THAT SO MUCH!
This was by far my favorite "declutter" video 😂 so funny! As for the sparkly top if you want to make it an "everyday" top go for it, but I believe in keeping special occasion clothes if you have the space and occasion for it.
That black fancy dress is AMAZING! I wish I had one in every color cause I'd wear them every day, no joke. It looks so comfy, you look happy and comfortable in it and that's all that really matters. I too have a black dress that I bought for a "special" occasion and now it's been to a funeral, a black tie wedding and just a nicer night out, but you know what? I really enjoy your little philosophy about making fancy things more every day, so screw it, it's gonna go into normal rotation! Honestly, i feel as if a lot of my things are going to see more day light because of your video. Thank you.
Which piece of clothing would you rob from me if you could?! Oh and here's that skillshare link again if you'd like it - don't sleep on it, only the first 1000 people to use the link will get a free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership, and when they're gone, they're gone! skl.sh/leenanorms05211
I would steal that Tate Britain top with the painting on the pocket also the vintage white blouse at 31:30. I will have to put on facebook notifications to look out for your giveaways.
I’m a new viewer and working backwards through your videos and noticed something fun. The robe-like dress, with spliced black/white leopard and reddish orange floral is pretty similar in construction to the Maya Ruffle dress from Daisy DIY that you’ve made. Love to see that you’ve been able to recreate a style that you love.
Don’t worry Leena, you’ll come across as friendly and fun whatever you wear ( but do hang on to the boiler suit... and your grandma’s gorgeous red dress). Also, you are the most quotable you-tuber! And I plan to steal your one liners unapologetically, starting with “I cannot babysit this dress while I wear it”.
That black dress with the sleeves and v-neck is gorgeous. You could wear that with a fun coloured top underneath. That blue dress though. Wow. 💖 And that amazing white shirt you are giving away. I do like delicate details. I like small flower prints too, but I refuse to wear skirts that aren't at least below the knee. This is inspiration to go de litter my winter wardrobe. I'm also over 30. I haven't changed sizes since college, but things I was OK wearing at 21 just isn't me anymore. And that's OK.
That perfect tank top really is my ideal top. The basics may be boring but theyre useful for making stuff like the green sparkly tank look more everyday wear
LEENA the dress at 27:10 - I have some easier ideas than sewing it into a v-neck - ONE: move the top button down to the location of the missing middle button. It doesn't need to button all the way to the top. TWO: buy 3 buttons from a thrift store or a craft store or ebay and just replace all 3 buttons. it is very easy and doesn't require a machine. you've got this!
This is so incredibly helpful! I have no clue why RUclips recommended this video to me, but I'm in the process of moving out of college (ie uni) and I've accumulated too many clothes to tote across the country. I was finding it really hard to get rid of things that I'd had fun college memories in, but now I feel very motivated. Thank you!!

As a lawyer I cant tell you how much I appreciated you explaining that you bought a dress covered in crabs in order to look formal.
😂😂😂
I also sewed some blouses when i began to work. One has foxes on it, the other one is also very colorful :D
I'm just imagining a lawyer striding into a courtroom with a suit covered in tiger faces like "and what?"
"I am too busy to babysit this dress while I wear it" OH FUCK
THAT'S INCREDIBLY RELATABLE
WHY DO I OWN CLOTHES THAT NEED SUPERVISION
haha exactly my sentiment - we're not about that supervision life!
DUDE. This is a revelation 🙌
Best thing I ever did is get rid of clothes I need to supervise. I no longer own button down shirts or wrap skirts for this reason.
"because this isn't in style, it can never go out of style" ICONIC words to live by
my issue with clothes i no longer wear, is that instead getting rid of them I tend to hoard them as pyjamas so the clutter never really disappears
Same. I’m 33 and I have T-shirts from when I was 15 that I keep as possible jammies but have never actually worn them
Same here! Or clothes to paint in when I inevitably move house.
Yes!! I have a whole drawer of pj's just because I don't want to just throw things out...
"a dominant hobbit" -- an aesthetic we all need to cultivate.
haha, there's definitely a capsule wardrobe in that !
I snorted when she said that, so good :D
Literally my aim in life :,)
"Clothes...I can't just give them up, it's illegal to be naked". The level of casualness that this was said with made me chuckle.
"I'll give MYSELF compliments - in a different t-shirt"
Now that's the energy I need to be bringing into this new era of unlockdown.
'does anybody's heart just sink at the sight of a basic even though you kind of know that every now and then you do need a basic' I have never felt so seen in my life
saaame
It's like eating your veg, sometimes you got to guzzle some broccili
this is very funny because basics are my absolute favourite and i love to wear them, and i also really love broccoli
My god yes my “basics” are literally any garment in a solid colour because I can’t stand any actual basic colours/cuts
@@clairextreme You are one of the special kind then :)
For that blue dress with the missing button, you can move the top button down and either leave it without a top button or add a statement button at the top. It would probably be easier than changing the neckline
She could also just change all 3 buttons. I don't think it will be that hard to find a style she likes.

Hey tiff! Fancy meeting you here. ❤️
I feel the same feeling for clothes and stuffed animals😂
With so many people flipping thrifted items as a side hustle, unless your taste is so unique or esoteric or whatever, it's likely someone else will buy it.
Amen! There's a fine line between rescue and hoarding, and I am constantly falling off that tightrope! :)
UGHHHHH so true! I feel guilt at re-donating cool thrift items that I NEVER wear. I just donated a bunch to a fund raiser yard sale though!
I appreciate you saying: "just because I get rid of [fan tee shirt] doesn't mean my interest in it is diminished" because I have a ton of fandom tees that I just don't wear but can't bear to get rid of
Same here! I'm planning to make a quilt from them. So hopefully I can re-use and still enjoy them that way.

You could totally wear that black wrap dress with statement earrings but practical shoes, like birkenstocks, and go for "someones funky aunt reading in her garden" vibes
You've just created a new section of my wardrobe.

How you feel about second-hand clothes is how I feel about plants for sale outside supermarkets (dunno if that's a thing over there, though.) The Rita Skeeter skirt is such a CLASSIC. Had forgotten about the red floral skirt, but glad it's found a nice home. :D

i LOVE that leenas idea of "looking formal" for business situations is wearing a dress that has yellow tigers all over it :D :D
You being sad about having to keep basics is honestly so relatable
I think it's fine if you have certain items you only wear for some occasions (like the glitter top),as long as you do wear it for the occasions.

Me watching you keeping your grandma's dress while wearing my grandma's dress from her 20's.
"I feel like I'm about to mount Richard Gere" is not a vibe any of my clothes give off, damn it...
20:04 looove the green jumpsuit!!! so much better than baby blue
Dyeing the jumpsuit green turned out AMAZING! My jaw dropped!

No chance expressing how much I love the fact that you kept the playing dress up dress 🥰 we used to have a very old chest with stuff like this. I kept an elegant purse of my grandma.
all your clothes are pretty, but the shirt-dress with books all over has to be one of my favourites, it looks so lovely on you too
I know this was posted more than a year ago but top tip on missing buttons for clothes you really love otherwise: just buy new buttons and switch out all of them on your dress. You can keep the existing buttons in a little jar for future sewing projects!
‘Mustard is not a depleting resource’ 😂 I need to think more like you, I’ve definitely got so many clothes that I just like the colour of or the idea of but never ever wear
I used to wear a Lucy and yak tie dye boilersuit when I was a teaching assistant- I can confirm they’re great for working in a school
An idea with fancy clothes is to wear them for sit down videos. That way you get to feel pretty and dressed up but still comfortable. So many of your dresses had really cute top halves!
That book dress is glorious. So outside my comfort zone but I kind of want it.

I just LOVE that no matter what the video is about you will have me genuinely laughing out loud absolute latest by the one minute mark. THANK YOU
for the dress at 27:10, have you thought of taking off the top button and reattaching it where the middle one was if you can't find the third button? i did this to a pajama top a while ago and it stopped me from getting rid of it : )
Genius!
oh that's a good shout! Or maybe just getting 3 new buttons that match from somewhere?! I'll improvise
the dying of that dress is so great! love going through clothes in this way so thanks for sharing your process!
“I’m British so I need a lot of jumpers”
/shows exactly two jumpers
I laughed in Canadian
that blue velvet dress is stunning !!!!!
Dress at 27:27, take the top button and sew it where the second is supposed to be!
I've lost a few central buttons and found repurposing the top button (which I rarely use anyway) has been a life saver.
I'm starting a petition for the redistribution of your awesomeness. One person just can't be allowed to have so much of it, it's barbaric.
14:30 I HAVE A CURSED SKIRT LIKE THIS 😂 I've been planning to switch the snaps to real buttons..... We'll see if I even get around to it haha. I need a declutter video like this for my sewing pile 😅
that blue velvet dress! It looks bloody brill on you and is so lovely!
I laughed when you put on the black basic and was bemoning it sparking no joy, because i looooovvvvvveeeee a nice fitting black long sleeved shirt so much I would wear it in every outfit. :D
Roll up them sleeves Leena!! Turn that baby from an awkward sleeve to a perfect sleeve x
"because this isn't in style it can never go out of style" is something I live by
This was by far my favorite "declutter" video 😂 so funny!
I am the Teddy Roosevelt fangirl you summoned!
@@danidelconte omg, drop me a line on Patreon, I'll send it to you RIGHT away!
I would steal teddy Roosevelt bc i love his arena quote that Brene brown uses as inspiration 💜
green leather skirt , i didn't know i needed to feel like rita skeeter until today
That newly green jumpsuit is divine!! This vid is motivating me to go through my closet too (thank you!)
So true!! I decide the occasion! So I wear whatever I want and don't care if people think I'm 'overdressed'
Aberystwyth is a beautiful place, and a fantastic uni! Can confirm, I spent 4 years there! And the clothing is always surprisingly good quality.
Yessssss my favourite Leena video returns! I rewatch the old Chuck Out Your Clothes With Me whenever I get existential about clothes.
TINKERBELL LEENA!!!
That black dress with the sleeves and v-neck is gorgeous. You could wear that with a fun coloured top underneath.
That blue dress though. Wow. 💖
And that amazing white shirt you are giving away.
I find myself rooting for clothes and then you get rid of the items then I’m heartbroken. Thank god I’m in the gumption club :)
Thank you!!
My pleasure!
Thank you for validating my sage green leather blazer I can't part with -- in the most eloquent way! Yay for dominant hobbits!!
