Elizabeth Cotten is my great grandmother. I am Brenda Evans, one of the great grands who she mentioned who added verses to the song Shake Sugaree. I am also the vocalist featured on her album Shake Sugaree. It is so wonderful to read the comments each of you have written. It makes me happy and grateful to know that you appreciate her music. Thank you!
That's awesome! How great that experience had to be. Love her music and sweet personality, so awesome. I heard freight train a few months ago and was in awe. Just found out a few minutes ago she was born in chapel hill, I just left there a few minutes ago literally, it's only 10 miles from me!
Well here I go crying again. I put a comment on another video here in you tube. When I was 12 years old I used to sing Freight Train in my back yard in Syracuse NY. Now years and years later I was sent to her house to accompany her daughter to a doctors appointment. I was so engrossed in all the things she told me about her life that I never told her that I used to sing that song. I didn’t know at that time that it was her song.
I guess it's okay it took me 45 years I find mrs. Cotton and Iwill follow her music until my last breath.🎵 Proof that everybody has a talent and it's up to us to find out which one .....Elizabeth Cotton's talent was god-given. What a beautiful vessel of music she was 🤘

Freight train was the first song I learnt to play
Same here. At thirteen, I saw her on Pete Seeger's PBS show. I was immediately smitten and committed to learning it. Still a wonderful song.
