Thanks to everyone who has watched this video! Here’s my answers to common FAQ’s about the project:
What color did I use? Espresso
Where can I buy the kit? Online here: shwv.co/~kZX3 or at Lowe’s or Home Depot (be sure to get it tinted in the paint section before you leave!)
What other supplies do you need? Click here for a full list: shwv.co/~/JHqs8G01cUA
How many kits did it take? 1 small kit (but if you paint it a lighter color you will probably need two)
How long did it take to do the project: 4 days, here’s a visual breakdown of the painting schedule that I made for a later video: bit.ly/2ucEbFw
How is it holding up? There was some wear and tear, check it out in this “Cabinet Update” video: ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html
Can you paint it white? Yes, 2 years later I painted it white! See that video here: ruclips.net/video/svJfrtErnIE/видео.html
Post any other questions below, I’m happy to answer them!
💚Ashley
Ashley's Green Life thanks for this video! I have the same oak color cabinets and am looking to go dark like you did! Just curious did you also do the inside of the drawers and cabinets? That was one of my main concerns with taking on this project.
Ashley's Green Life Do they sell the same kit at lowes or Home Depot ? Since the video is 3 years old that's why I'm asking lol
Yes they do, usually found in the paint section. ( :
I did the insides of the cabinets and drawers the second time around when I painted them white, but there usually isn't enough paint with the kits to paint the insides.
If you used Espresso is it suppose to come out like that pretty dark color if you don't use the glaze? Does the glaze make it a bit lighter?
I've just completed my cabinet transformation using this product. First of all, it's a lot of work if you're doing this yourself, the cost is more like $400 if you're planning on replacing the old handles getting more pads and brushes and other supplies. You'll probably want to sand all the doors with a 220 grit sandpaper for best results and not just use the deglosser. You'll probably also want to repaint the interiors of the cabinets as well if you're going to give it a new look. I also changed the cupboard glass which was an old ugly plexiglass to a clear glass. New screws, new handles, TSP cleaner, tact cloth, paint thinner, mask and goggles, latext gloves, masking tape, paint, rollers, drop cloths, lazy susan, my kitchen took 2 kits to complete and left over for the bathroom and rails. All this will run up the cost to like $400 and around 2 weeks realistically but it`s still worth it.
+Rick Deckard Thanks this really helped!
I think this product is meant to save you from buying new cabinets, if you buy new then all you need to do is tint them, won't need this.
Faylicia Kennell I would imagine that the cabinets you buy would be fully finished, probably much easier than to buy unfinished then tint yourself unless it's a specific color. Best of luck!
+Rick Deckard Fully finished would be a solid lacquer or a wiping stain/lacquer sprayed in a shop. Even spraying they are a lot of work when installed.
+Rick Deckard I thought $100 didn't sound realistic. Also, I can see that this is a ton of work. In the beginning she said she had two weeks before she went back to her job so she undertook this project. That's 80 hours at least and she had two helpers. Her cabinets do look very nice though.
Dude nice job, I hope my wife don't find this video because she's going to want me to do it. but really nice made it look really easy
LOL ( :
Danial Fanar lol
Danial Fanar 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I did the exact same thing.. tried painting 1 thing...I walked thru the house & just kept painting.. looks awesome !!!!!! I loved your house...mines not quite that large..love your outcome!!
That's cool! ( :
I just painted all of my kitchen cabinets for less than $100 using Farmhouse Paint. Requires NO sanding and no topcoat. That sold me! Plus their selection of colors was perfect for my kitchen. No odor let me just paint them on a glass table in my kitchen. I used TSP to clean the cabinets first.
I love you! Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm buying a house that hasn't been updated since the 50's and the only reason we could even buy it was because my husband is a disabled vet so he was guaranteed the loan. I'm trying to find inexpensive ways to make it look nicer, especially the kitchen. We're making an island out of an old dresser we bought at a thrift shop and I e been searching for the best and cheapest ways to do the cabinets and the built in. They're beautiful and were built by the last owners grandfather when he built the house so they are sturdy as hell but very outdated look wise and a little beat up from a century of family fun. Also the Krud cleaner I didn't know existed was amazing on the hood over the stove and splash guard looks like new!!! Thank you so much!
there's nothing a fresh coat of paint can't fix!
Gorgeous home upgrade!!!!
Thanks so much! I actually just refinished these cabinets and painted them white! I'll be posting that video Sunday if you're interested to see the new look ( :
Wow what an amazing transformation! I absolutely love this. We remodeled our old kitchen with new cabinets when we bought the house. Had I seen this I probably never would have. but I'll will definitely do this to the oak cabinets we have in our garage and a spare cabinet we got for our dog food and supplies. you've got a new subscriber in me! Have a great week!
Aww thanks! Glad to have you. ( :
Wow Ive been wanting do do this to my cabinets for three years and finally am ready! Doing it myself so it's gonna be a big task but this is such great motivation! Thank you so much for sharing!
Hope it turns great! Best of luck! Tag me on Instagram if you want @ashleysgreenlife ( :
how has it held up since you finished it?
Best video ever, I took my 20 year old bathroom vanity from a builders white (Melamine/Fake wood) to Espresso. I watched this quite a few times before doing mine and during (among other videos). Thanks, watching you and your mom really helped me a lot. Especially the part about not being afraid of the top coat. A lot of the reviews on other sites scared me as well but I'm glad you actually showed both of your techniques. I copied your mom using the sponges and it worked perfectly. I did also have the brush on hand just in case and did use it for a clean up of the top coat once. I started in an unseen area of the vanity first and by the second unseen area I had my technique down to move on to the doors. I also added 2 tbsp of water once I poured it out because I read it gives you a little more "work time" which seemed to work because I had no problems with it.
it worked on laminate?
Great color!! Black or dark brown compliments any colors very well...makes the "pop". This is exactly how we are going to upgrade our kitchen. Great job!!!
Great transformation for such a good price!!! We're buying an old farmhouse and this looks way easier to do then what I had planned for the bland kitchen cabinets!!
I have never used this product before but I suggest that you don't want to skimp on the prep work. The deglazer is not a cleaner it removes some of the old polyurethane top coat so that the primer will have good adherence. A good degreaser in the kitchen is really needed. I would suggest a light sanding with 220 grit after you deglaze to assure the product will adhere well and to smooth any imperfections. A very light sanding between coats is not a bad idea just to knock off some of the imperfections and promote better bonding. Lastly I would suggest two coats of polyurethane on the outside of the cabinets and drawers. This will make your finish much more durable and easy to clean. I used a foam roller to get the product on the surface and then layed off with a quality brush in the directoin of the grain to insure a smooth finish. Someone suggested tinting the polyurethane which if supported by the manufacturer would be good but I want a very high gloss look for my kitchen so I left mine clear. If your hardware has old paint, a quick and easy way to restore them like new is to simmer them in a mixture of baking soda and water for about 30 - 60 minutes on the stove. As I enjoy sleeping with my wife, I used an old camping pot. Most of the paint will just fall off but a tooth brush is handy when you're rinsing them in the sink for any small areas or just simmer them for a little longer. Happy restoring
Mitchell Manor or use an old slow cooker.
I did my cabinets with this stain and also all my doors. Only prep I did was clean them. Been about 6 months now and it is all holding up great.
Great video! I appreciate you making this video for all us DIYers!
Thanks so much for doing this video! I bought my first house 5 months ago and thought I would be saving up for years before I could get decent looking kitchen cabinets.
I Loved This!! My husband and I are buying a home soon & realizing reno is basically a must for all the homes we're seeing. It was so encouraging to watch this!
Glad to hear it! Best of luck with your home shopping!
Wow, what a great job. Everything is made to be disposable these days. It's nice to see you take solid oak cabinets and give them new life instead of paying $20000 for "new" cabinets that would start falling apart in 10 years. Green indeed. The effort, energy and cost involved in keeping things "looking updated" is insane. You've def found a way around it. Your hard work has certainly paid off, and nice to see your whole family involved. First video of yours I've watched!
Thank you so much for your kind words! ( :
Enjoyed your information and transformation of your home. Every room and area you tracked looked marvelous!
Thanks so much!
Thank you Ashley! I am about to embark on painting my cabinets. You made it look seamless and pretty easy. Thank you for the hope. Love your upgrades! Beautiful home.
Aww so glad to hear it! ( :
Beautiful! I love the banisters of the railing!
Great tip and all the cabinetry looks beautiful.
Thank you!
Wow. That's crazy how different it looks. My house also has the oak looking cabinets and Formica tops. Really wanna update it and the fact that the kit is under $100 makes it even more appealing. Thanks for uploading.
Hope you can give it a try! ( :
Found this vid while looking for ideas to restore my bathroom cabinets. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. My cabinets are the same color as yours (the old ones) and I want the same color that you used. COLOSSAL thanks to you for posting this and being so thorough in your details!
Glad you found it helpful! ( :
So clever....that inexpensive trick changed EVERYTHING!! 😍😍😍 Thanks for the video.
You bet!
Your husband has got to love you. If I suggested my wife to do that she would say "no way". We're going to the cabinet store. It looks fantastic. Best of all you and your helpers did it.. I think if I do it, it's better than new!
LOL, he does! I'm the one usually with the idea so I like to just take charge and get it done. ( :
Looks super good! Crazy how paint transformed the space. Awesome job
I agree!
you guys worked HARD and the results are flawless. I like the touch with the updated silver handles on all the cabinet doors in the house. This is so inspiring! thanks for sharing!
You bet! Glad you enjoyed it! ( : Yes, hard work but so worth it!
Great job!!! it looks amazing, and I love how you did the rest of the house because it ties in everything. It new and fresh and most importantly green! great example of how there is no excuse to getting what you want, or making a home beautiful.
Glad you like it! ( :
Love the color! I want to do mine that color as well! Looks beautiful!
I'm not impressed often but I love this! Great color. Dark and sophisticated! But not depressing. Love it! Great job! Btw love the advice about the corner pieces. Omg and I can't forget the affordibilty! 😍😍😍😍
Thanks! Yes I love the affordability too!
I love your cabinets! Rustoleum cabinet transformations is an awesome product. We finished our bathroom in Espresso w/the glaze and it looks great. We are working on the kitchen now instead of buying new cabinets. What a huge cost saver!
Glad you are having great results with them too! ( : I love the money saving part as well!
OMG! It came out beautiful....looks very updated now luv it
Thank you!
Great video. I started small and tackled the kids bathroom vanity last winter. Took my time and topped it off with a new granite countertop. The $2k I saved on the custom cabinet went into the granite, under mount sink and hardware. The bathroom looks amazing. Fooled the granite guy. He thought the cabinet was new. It's been a year and it looks just a good as the day I completed it. Patience and time is the key.
Thanks for sharing! Loved your project idea. Very cool ( :
This would be amazing for flipping houses on the cheap. completely changes the entire look!
+SQ8warrior Yep! ( :
what a brilliant result for the smallest amount spent - so smart - your kitchen and other areas look brand new - well done
Thanks!
Wow, looks amazing! Just made it look more modern
Great job, Ashley. Rustoleum should seriously pay you a million dollars. Your video was better than any advertisement I've ever seen for their company. :)
+Terri Chappell (GVRCNP) Aww thanks! Glad to hear it's helping other people save money instead of having to replace old cabinets. ( :
I was looking into this kit so thank you for the helpful video.
And what color is that you chose?
Espresso ( : Glad you found the video helpful!
Great job Ashley! And showing the before and after pictures, simultaneously was very helpful!
Glad to hear it!
You're right .... it looks terrific! I've wondered about this product and so glad to see it really works. Thanks for the video!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! ( :
Love It Wonderful job! I'm going g to do this for my cabinets...
Cool! Hope it turns out great!
That turned out amazing! I really like the Cherry tone you painted half of the one cabinet door with, thanks for showing that.
Sure!
I absolutely LOVE this! I renovating this old home I purchased & the cabinets are outdated but I didn't want to throw them out.
thanks for sharing your experience :)!
+Alexandra Figueroa You bet! ( :
Beautiful!!! It looks like a new kitchen and bathrooms. I love that Dark color. My kitchen is that light oak and I hate it. Idk if I have the courage to do this project. But again it looks beautiful!
Thanks! I was just so tired of the oak that it motivated me to do the project lol! ( :
i remember wen i was a college freshmen n my mom left to vacation n i was home bored i painted all the cabinets . then i realised i hated ths wall so i painted it too. then i realise i hated some of her decor n i toss them n did some DIY decor. she was surprised how diff our kitchen n living room look n i paid literally nothing because the paint had been in the shed forever waiting to be used.
Lol she is borderline a hoarder wen it comes to decors so yes she did mind. If u know any caribbean person u will know they keep a ton of unnecessary junk in their house.
Trishana rowz lol so tru
What a loving daughter you are!
Umm, are you and I related? Lolz...
Can I adopt you? Haha
Excellent transformation and money saver. You guys are super smart! Thanks for sharing re-awakening my creative side.
This was JUST what I was praying I would find on youtube today. I've been desperately wanting to redo our cabinets, but we have no way to part with the cash to have new ones put in. This will save us so much money and time and it'll make a huge difference to our kitchen. You have no idea. Thank you for doing this and sharing it with everyone!
You bet! So glad you found it helpful! Best of luck on your kitchen project. ( :
beautiful
Thanks!
Wow under 100 bucks. Looks GREAT! I will be purchasing this product. Thanks Ashley!
Wow. What a change! It did change the atmosphere!
( :
What a wonderful updated look...great work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! ( :
I did my cabinets too. Great job.
+Cyn'sEmptyNest Thanks! ( :
+AshleysGreenLife please help me and let me know if your cabinets are still good. I'm planning to paint mine next month
What you have to remember about this product is make sure you get your bond coat tinted, before leaving the store.
+Mike Smith Yes very true!
+AshleysGreenLife what tint did you pick, the black or one up from that? (kona) I'm afraid the straight black will be too dark.
***** I picked the rust color. it came out nice.
+AshleysGreenLife could you have left the doors on or would it have been more difficult
Bajaheat I left then on. I just used painters tape for the stuff I did not want to be ruined by the rust o magic.
This is amazing!! You're house looks so pretty and more modern
Thanks!
Wow! Such a simple thing made the kitchen really some back to life. The bathrooms turned out really great too. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks! I agree it did give it a whole new look.
Thanks for posting this! You have inspired me to FINALLY tackle my ugly kitchen cabinets :-) My kitchen is about the same size; how long do you think it would take ONE person to do it?
+Jennifer Pecore three days
I would suggest anyone contemplating using this stuff to take a good look at a sample before doing it.
very pretty!! Your fabric choice for the small bit of color in the cafe curtain is spot on!
Thanks so much!
Awesome job!!! I'm so glad that you also included in the video your bathroom cabinets and stair railings...I'm actually considering painting my stair rail as well.
Thanks for this video.😁
Go for it!
Nice job ,lots of work, not everybody has the patience, good think I do
I love the cabinets! Maybe if you don't like the counter tops you can use granite contact paper. Its a pretty easy life hack! ❤❤
And stick on mosaic tiles would look awesome. Look into it if you can, its cheap and very effective, I think you'll love them.
Yes I was about to try that this summer but my white countertops were actually textured so it wouldn't work ) : Ended up just replacing them with a laminate that looks like marble but for a fraction of the cost and I'm really happy with how it turned out!
please do a video on your countertops!! :)
Ibym
I’ve been stalking the stonecoat counter epoxy. Immediately thought about that with these beautiful cabinets!
Looks wonderful! All of it.. You all did a great job you have a great family
Aww thanks so much!
I just moved into my new condo. And I want to to my kitchen cabinets over , this looks easy enough to do for a weekend Diy project. Now I want to do the bathroom as well, lol . Thanks for sharing everything looks amazing!! 👍🏾👍🏾
You bet! Hope it can help you!
completely off topic ... you have ALOT of bananas
We freeze them and make smoothies ( :
Love it. That mid-western oak cabinet look is not for me either!
Agreed. ( :
I love it! It changed everything and I am sure will increase the value of your home. I close on my home in a few weeks and plan to redo my cabinets as well!
Hope it turns out great!
The transformation was great to watch. And this is a good video for those under a budget to keep.
Looks great. Has it held up well?
Thanks! Here's an update video I recently did that shows how the cabinets have held up: ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html
Ohdarn l
Awesome video! How are they holding up?
Here's an update on the cabinets if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html ( :
You did a wonderful job! It is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
That's awesome! Looks amazing, it really adds that modern value to the home. Great work
Thanks!
Btw Leave white on stairs don't listen to that mean over opinionated person it looks good makes it pop :)
Eva lopez, yes. The white and dark wood is so popular right now!
oh a drill is involved IMA need a man on deck lol
Or you can just use a screwdriver to remove them the old fashion way.
wow! Everything you updated looks awesome.
Thanks I agree, such an update!
It turned out BEAUTIFUL - Nice work! And you saved a ton of money 💰
I'm curious as to the durability over time of the Rustoleum product to recommend to clients who choose the DIY route. My go to for solid colour changes to cabinetry is clean and do a sand as required, then spray one coat of Inslx STIX bonding primer, then a 220 sand, then first coat of Benjamin Moore Advance Pearl Waterbourne/Alkyd, then after a minimum of 4 hours, another sand with 220 and then the final spray.
Thanks for sharing your method. Here's a recent video I did with an update on the cabinets: ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html Good to know there's other cabinet painting options out there.
wow you eat a lot of bananas
patissanchez she probably does smoothies
This is amazing!!!!! Your video helped me transform my home. THANK YOU!
Yay! You bet.
Great job! It is definitely time consuming but well worth it. I painted my cabinets & replaced the handles to give my kitchen an update & it was rewarding to see the end result. Thanks for sharing, your kitchen looks awesome!
Thanks!
Looks good. WHY ALL THE BANANAS THOUGH?!
+Adam Maciejewski lol thats only 2 smoothies for me.. I have 10 a day for breakfast^^
I noticed one of the cabinets in they're house said ALL VEGAN. vegans eat a lot of bananas lol
lolololololololololol
Maybe she likes how they feel.
lahkidd thats wrong bruh
I'm doing this and I'm gonna add those fake marble things to do my counter tops with I think it'll look grate and their only like 1$ a peace
And try those stick on tiles on ur splashbacks, they're cheap and look amazing.
Tell me more
It's kind of life hard paper you put over your counters it's like 1$ per roll
It won't let me post the link but if you go to my channel there's a play list called random shit and you there's a video on it and one for marble floor her name is Marie Jay
I just did those for my backsplash and I'll be posting a video about them soon! I used: www.thesmarttiles.com/en_us/
Very Nice! I like how the color looks, and spray painting the hinges made a huge difference. I liked the toilet paper holder update too. Thanks for your video.
You're welcome! Thanks for your kind words about it.
just fabulous.. every piece improved by a gazillion percent.. from country to elegant with just paint.. i'm not much of a wood color lover and am thinking about doing some acrylic fluid art pouring treatment on my cabinet doors.. thanks for sharing your home and fabulous project.. a very enjoyable video that got me inspired..
Glad to hear it inspired you! I love how paint can change the look completely!
how long did the whole process take ?
a month
:)
3-4 days
Please give an update.... I'm super curious if you're still recommending this product. You've got to be experiencing the wear, scratches and nicks in it by now. The cabinet handles, the edge of your countertop, your railings, I'm sure all look horrible at this point. This product is not long lasting, just a quick fix if you're getting ready to sell.
This is a great product. Just make sure you have it tinted to your desired color. There is a dark kit and a light kit. I did mine several years ago and they still look great. I may have put an extra protective coat on as a precaution...don't remember
Cabinet update is up! ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html
LOOKS FREAKING AWESOME
The best I've seen ! What an amazing job ! Loved that it turned into a family project 👌🏾
Thanks! ( : Yep love that we all had a part in it!
girl those drapes above the sink tho
It's funny, I actually like the updated ones, to each their own ( ;
I like the updated ones too! Love the pattern and colors; looks great with your dark cabinets :)
I liked the results but sorry I do not believe there was enough paint to do it all etc for under $100. Honestly, do not believe that it cost less then $100.
Wife is doing our bathroom for under 17 bucks
I am thinking the same thing too. I'd love to try this in my kitchen, bathrooms and banister. Will one kit really do all of that?
Debi Mitchell even if its 200-400, it's much better than the cost of replacing them all
The kit costs less than $80 and if you already own the brushes what else would you need to buy except maybe some tape and drop cloths. And the metallic spray for the hardware
I needed 2 large kits. Still worth it.
Thank you so much for this video. I am in the process of remodeling my apartment and the kitchen is my next step and Ive been stressing over the estimates ive been getting dor the remodeling until I seen this video. So helpful and so affordable! Thank you again! You home looks perfect with you remodeling!!!
Aww thanks! Hope it can help you out with your remodeling!
The kitchen came up looking great. It was the banisters that surprised me though. WOW absolutely wonderful.
Thanks!
I did this to my cabinets...painted them black. Never again! At first they looked real nice like the ones in this video... then over time with grease grime and dirt they look horrible. Constant cleaning and wiping to get grime and dust off.To make matters worse the paint comes off with continual wiping. So after 3 years we added another coat with gloss to give it a fresh look and it just gave it a cheap painted look with thick portions of paint seeping into beveled corners. So now we are selling our home and after 6 years with black cabinets, we are having to strip cabinets down to original wood because surprise surprise 90 percent of buyers dont like painted cabinets and black or dark ones even less. A wood stain is fine but painting it is a no no. Oh and if u think painting was a pain...wait until you have to strip them.
+LadyOrion2012 Did you use this specific Rustoleum kit?
+AshleysGreenLife it's been a year now, can you update us on how your cabinets looks right now? Have you had any issues?
Here's an update on the cabinets and how I've touched them up to look nice and new ( : ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html
I used this product, followed directions exactly. Looked amazing for about 9 months. Unfortunately, now I am having them professionally redone. This product easily scratches, where fingernails touch grabbing the knobs, and also many nicks. Due to the process you cannot retouch spots. I DO NOT recommend this product.
+Reining Chicka You really need to sand down the cabinets for the bond coat to adhere to the wood.
+Brandon Holliman you are rigth
Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I was frustrated with the scratches and how it wore away in certain areas, but I was able to touch up mine and it's looking pretty good now. I learned some lessons along the way and am thinking that a second coat of the final top coat in the high traffic areas may have helped decreased the problem, just a thought. ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html Hope your cabinets are doing good now!
Do I need to sand the cabinets before cleaning?
Looks so modern!! Very nice!!! I love the color!,,
Thank you!
First of all, everything turned out amazing. But I just have to commend you on your amount of patience and determination. I always get super hyped about starting a project and by the time I've taped everything off I'm pretty much burned out and ready to move on to something else. Kudos to you!
+Mohamed Tork Thanks! It helped to have my husband and mom, they took over when I was burned out. ( :
Hard to believe people want to get rid of the oak look. Crazy.
Oak is incredibly dated. I have oak cabinets, and they're bloody awful!
How do you figure? All the million dollar homes use oak and expensive woods. Nobody has painted trim in a multi million dollar house. I shouldnt say nobody, but its rare. Painting your trim is something you do if you have beat up looking wood in a old house, or trying to have a good look for cheap in a new home.badgirl780
+TheMovieEditor Its dated looking. Even mansions can look dated also. Anyway, its a preference of visual asthetics. I think dark brown or white look great. Oak colored furniture feels old.
I agree with most others, the Golden Oak is SO dated looking..... Love love the look of the Espresso or Black...... Every high end house I have been in has THIS look .... With dark granite countertops too !!!!! Not sure I have the time or energy to put into this project tho !!!! Wish I did!!! It's beautiful!!!
+TheMovieEditor
I love oak but that finish treatment is really outdated. a dark Stain or ammonia treatment for the oak is what's in at the moment. most people want the look of an exotic wood and oak is all too common of a hardwod.
That guy has a prison tattoo.
No he definently does not.
Tattoos show creativity!
So what if it was? Who are you to judge?
Judging is human nature WE all judge.
Wooow what a difference it makes with the dark finish. Your kitchen went from OK to freaking awesome.
Thanks! ( :
You did great! Your updates with the new paint made a big difference! :)
Thanks! I just updated them again and painted them white, will post the video this coming Sunday!
