    Thanks to everyone who has watched this video! Here’s my answers to common FAQ’s about the project:
    What color did I use? Espresso
    Where can I buy the kit? Online here: shwv.co/~kZX3 or at Lowe’s or Home Depot (be sure to get it tinted in the paint section before you leave!)
    What other supplies do you need? Click here for a full list: shwv.co/~/JHqs8G01cUA
    How many kits did it take? 1 small kit (but if you paint it a lighter color you will probably need two)
    How long did it take to do the project: 4 days, here’s a visual breakdown of the painting schedule that I made for a later video: bit.ly/2ucEbFw
    How is it holding up? There was some wear and tear, check it out in this “Cabinet Update” video: ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html
    Can you paint it white? Yes, 2 years later I painted it white! See that video here: ruclips.net/video/svJfrtErnIE/видео.html
    Post any other questions below, I’m happy to answer them!

      Ashley's Green Life thanks for this video! I have the same oak color cabinets and am looking to go dark like you did! Just curious did you also do the inside of the drawers and cabinets? That was one of my main concerns with taking on this project.

      Ashley's Green Life Do they sell the same kit at lowes or Home Depot ? Since the video is 3 years old that's why I'm asking lol

      Yes they do, usually found in the paint section. ( :

      I did the insides of the cabinets and drawers the second time around when I painted them white, but there usually isn't enough paint with the kits to paint the insides.

      If you used Espresso is it suppose to come out like that pretty dark color if you don't use the glaze? Does the glaze make it a bit lighter?

    I've just completed my cabinet transformation using this product. First of all, it's a lot of work if you're doing this yourself, the cost is more like $400 if you're planning on replacing the old handles getting more pads and brushes and other supplies. You'll probably want to sand all the doors with a 220 grit sandpaper for best results and not just use the deglosser. You'll probably also want to repaint the interiors of the cabinets as well if you're going to give it a new look. I also changed the cupboard glass which was an old ugly plexiglass to a clear glass. New screws, new handles, TSP cleaner, tact cloth, paint thinner, mask and goggles, latext gloves, masking tape, paint, rollers, drop cloths, lazy susan, my kitchen took 2 kits to complete and left over for the bathroom and rails. All this will run up the cost to like $400 and around 2 weeks realistically but it`s still worth it.

      I think this product is meant to save you from buying new cabinets, if you buy new then all you need to do is tint them, won't need this.

    • @rickdeckard9810
      @rickdeckard9810 8 лет назад

      Faylicia Kennell I would imagine that the cabinets you buy would be fully finished, probably much easier than to buy unfinished then tint yourself unless it's a specific color. Best of luck!

    • @wallnutspainting2811
      @wallnutspainting2811 8 лет назад

      +Rick Deckard Fully finished would be a solid lacquer or a wiping stain/lacquer sprayed in a shop. Even spraying they are a lot of work when installed.

    • @tracybrown4941
      @tracybrown4941 8 лет назад +5

      +Rick Deckard I thought $100 didn't sound realistic. Also, I can see that this is a ton of work. In the beginning she said she had two weeks before she went back to her job so she undertook this project. That's 80 hours at least and she had two helpers. Her cabinets do look very nice though.

    I just painted all of my kitchen cabinets for less than $100 using Farmhouse Paint. Requires NO sanding and no topcoat. That sold me! Plus their selection of colors was perfect for my kitchen. No odor let me just paint them on a glass table in my kitchen. I used TSP to clean the cabinets first.

    I love you! Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm buying a house that hasn't been updated since the 50's and the only reason we could even buy it was because my husband is a disabled vet so he was guaranteed the loan. I'm trying to find inexpensive ways to make it look nicer, especially the kitchen. We're making an island out of an old dresser we bought at a thrift shop and I e been searching for the best and cheapest ways to do the cabinets and the built in. They're beautiful and were built by the last owners grandfather when he built the house so they are sturdy as hell but very outdated look wise and a little beat up from a century of family fun. Also the Krud cleaner I didn't know existed was amazing on the hood over the stove and splash guard looks like new!!! Thank you so much!

    Best video ever, I took my 20 year old bathroom vanity from a builders white (Melamine/Fake wood) to Espresso. I watched this quite a few times before doing mine and during (among other videos). Thanks, watching you and your mom really helped me a lot. Especially the part about not being afraid of the top coat. A lot of the reviews on other sites scared me as well but I'm glad you actually showed both of your techniques. I copied your mom using the sponges and it worked perfectly. I did also have the brush on hand just in case and did use it for a clean up of the top coat once. I started in an unseen area of the vanity first and by the second unseen area I had my technique down to move on to the doors. I also added 2 tbsp of water once I poured it out because I read it gives you a little more "work time" which seemed to work because I had no problems with it.

    I have never used this product before but I suggest that you don't want to skimp on the prep work. The deglazer is not a cleaner it removes some of the old polyurethane top coat so that the primer will have good adherence. A good degreaser in the kitchen is really needed. I would suggest a light sanding with 220 grit after you deglaze to assure the product will adhere well and to smooth any imperfections. A very light sanding between coats is not a bad idea just to knock off some of the imperfections and promote better bonding. Lastly I would suggest two coats of polyurethane on the outside of the cabinets and drawers. This will make your finish much more durable and easy to clean. I used a foam roller to get the product on the surface and then layed off with a quality brush in the directoin of the grain to insure a smooth finish. Someone suggested tinting the polyurethane which if supported by the manufacturer would be good but I want a very high gloss look for my kitchen so I left mine clear. If your hardware has old paint, a quick and easy way to restore them like new is to simmer them in a mixture of baking soda and water for about 30 - 60 minutes on the stove. As I enjoy sleeping with my wife, I used an old camping pot. Most of the paint will just fall off but a tooth brush is handy when you're rinsing them in the sink for any small areas or just simmer them for a little longer. Happy restoring

    Wow, what a great job. Everything is made to be disposable these days. It's nice to see you take solid oak cabinets and give them new life instead of paying $20000 for "new" cabinets that would start falling apart in 10 years. Green indeed. The effort, energy and cost involved in keeping things "looking updated" is insane. You've def found a way around it. Your hard work has certainly paid off, and nice to see your whole family involved. First video of yours I've watched!

    Great video. I started small and tackled the kids bathroom vanity last winter. Took my time and topped it off with a new granite countertop. The $2k I saved on the custom cabinet went into the granite, under mount sink and hardware. The bathroom looks amazing. Fooled the granite guy. He thought the cabinet was new. It's been a year and it looks just a good as the day I completed it. Patience and time is the key.

      Yes I was about to try that this summer but my white countertops were actually textured so it wouldn't work ) : Ended up just replacing them with a laminate that looks like marble but for a fraction of the cost and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

    I'm curious as to the durability over time of the Rustoleum product to recommend to clients who choose the DIY route. My go to for solid colour changes to cabinetry is clean and do a sand as required, then spray one coat of Inslx STIX bonding primer, then a 220 sand, then first coat of Benjamin Moore Advance Pearl Waterbourne/Alkyd, then after a minimum of 4 hours, another sand with 220 and then the final spray.

    Please give an update.... I'm super curious if you're still recommending this product. You've got to be experiencing the wear, scratches and nicks in it by now. The cabinet handles, the edge of your countertop, your railings, I'm sure all look horrible at this point. This product is not long lasting, just a quick fix if you're getting ready to sell.

      This is a great product. Just make sure you have it tinted to your desired color. There is a dark kit and a light kit. I did mine several years ago and they still look great. I may have put an extra protective coat on as a precaution...don't remember

    I did this to my cabinets...painted them black. Never again! At first they looked real nice like the ones in this video... then over time with grease grime and dirt they look horrible. Constant cleaning and wiping to get grime and dust off.To make matters worse the paint comes off with continual wiping. So after 3 years we added another coat with gloss to give it a fresh look and it just gave it a cheap painted look with thick portions of paint seeping into beveled corners. So now we are selling our home and after 6 years with black cabinets, we are having to strip cabinets down to original wood because surprise surprise 90 percent of buyers dont like painted cabinets and black or dark ones even less. A wood stain is fine but painting it is a no no. Oh and if u think painting was a pain...wait until you have to strip them.

    I used this product, followed directions exactly. Looked amazing for about 9 months. Unfortunately, now I am having them professionally redone. This product easily scratches, where fingernails touch grabbing the knobs, and also many nicks. Due to the process you cannot retouch spots. I DO NOT recommend this product.

      Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I was frustrated with the scratches and how it wore away in certain areas, but I was able to touch up mine and it's looking pretty good now. I learned some lessons along the way and am thinking that a second coat of the final top coat in the high traffic areas may have helped decreased the problem, just a thought. ruclips.net/video/co1nj9LY6OY/видео.html Hope your cabinets are doing good now!

      How do you figure? All the million dollar homes use oak and expensive woods. Nobody has painted trim in a multi million dollar house. I shouldnt say nobody, but its rare. Painting your trim is something you do if you have beat up looking wood in a old house, or trying to have a good look for cheap in a new home.badgirl780

      I love oak but that finish treatment is really outdated. a dark Stain or ammonia treatment for the oak is what's in at the moment. most people want the look of an exotic wood and oak is all too common of a hardwod.
