  • Hi!
    In this video I show my adventure replacing the rechargeable battery in a SimpleHuman soap dispenser we bought in a two pack from Costco. It's not super easy, but it is doable. It'll save you about $60 and there will be one less piece of trash in your local landfill.
    I've been successfully using it for the past couple of weeks with no problem, I'm hoping we can get a couple more years out it. Comment below if this helps you out.

    For anyone trying to repair this for themselves, I feel like the hardest part of this repair is separating the dispenser in the first place, so I really want to stress that you are NOT just trying to get through a glued/bonded seam.
    You must cut through about 1mm of plastic to separate the pieces. The dispenser top connects to the bottom with a tongue-in-groove type joint, so you have to completely cut through the tongue portion of that. So don't worry about heating it up or trying to have it separate cleanly so you can put it back together. It will be permanently damaged in the process and you will have to seal it back together with some other method after replacing the battery (epoxy, CA glue, etc.)
    I didn't understand this from all the videos on this that people have made and it would have helped me to know that.
    Also as someone else mentioned don't go too deep on the corner of the nozzle portion because you could slice into the tube that the soap is pumped through ( 9:07 in this video, the tube with blue soap in it)

    Excellent video!! I wouldn't have been able to unlock the dispenser without your informative detective work. A couple lessons learned: 1.) Try a small exacto blade to cut and shave the plastic away. This is a mechanical removal in order to disassemble the dispenser. 2.) Use caution around the dispenser tip as there is a plastic tube on the left side. The last part that came free was at the end where the soap is dispensed. 3.) Wear gloves.
    I had a cell phone repair kit that had a metal spatula that was very effective in getting the dispenser opened.
    Thanks!😃

    When you removed the original battery I noticed in the video that the wires ( red was on the left of the connectors plastic center indent on the old battery 8:23 ) & ( red was on the right of the connectors plastic center indent on the NEW battery 8:52 ) were of opposite polarity to the old & new battery connectors polarity. Without seeing that you then plugged in the new battery into the circuit board then added the power supply to charge the unit only to discover no charge light and a clicking sound. Maybe it was the protection side of the circuit board clicking because of the reverse polarity.
    The one thing I truly appreciate from this video and your effort to fix what SHOULD BE an easy fix to the end user (especially an occasional necessary battery replacement) , is that these companies that make these products intentionally design ALL their products for short term THROW AWAY and REPLACE with NEW type design. And YET we are told that it is US that is destroying and polluting our planet and we must now pay HIGHER and EXTRA taxes instead of resolving to a more intelligent solution of NOT permitting the designing of short term use THROW AWAY products that could EASILY be LIFE EXTENDED by customer capable battery replacements, better lasting materials or simple software updates that would extend the useful life of a product indefinitely.
    But then again, it is our government that PERMITS and even finances these companies to continue these practices while at the same time telling the people THEY are the problem that MUST PAY for all the problems the GOVERNMENT permits and regulates as GOOD for the ENVIRONMENT. Not to mention that it also wastes more of the limited money that the average person has because everything needs to be replaced every few years!!!
    Sorry for my run-on message, but when I witness your great video showing how difficult it was to disassemble something to perform a POTENTIAL easy fix it reminds me and truly frustrates me to WHY we WASTE so much of our TIME, MONEY and resources on something that could EASILY be FIXED if the policies were implemented to change back to designing everything for only LONG TERM USE.
    Okay I the moron will shut up NOW.
    S.A. Have an awesome 2024 while you still can.

    I just wanna say that I opened that housing by using a sharp knife and a hammer, and a pounded it into the seam all the way around to get it apart. My repair was however, not successful because there was a kink in the line and as I took all of that apart and the housing apart, I realize the collapse of the line was not going to allow any soap through it. Anyway, I didn’t want to post a video because I’m not only a woman, but I’m left-handed and people tend to freak out when they see left-handed people with sharp objects. Thank you for your video.

      @MikeDIY  22 дня назад

      @@melodybaudino8798 was the collapse in the line on the line that pumps the soap through it or something else. I think a link in that line would be ok, but not 100%. Nice job cracking that thing open. That’s also funny about people’s perception of lefties.

    Nice repair video! What do you think about using adhesive silicone instead of epoxy for gluing the top of the unit back to the base? Also do you think its possible to fit a longer battery in the same space?

    • @MikeDIY
      @MikeDIY  9 месяцев назад

      You could probably use silicone, though not 100% sure. Same on the battery, you could fit a larger battery, but not sure how much bigger.

    I ended up using a Dremel with a thin cutting disk. Much much faster. maybe a slightly wider wider gap but we will see. I plan on only epoxying 4-5 spots and marking where they are. Then use gray silicone to seal the rest. That way if you need to open it again, you only have to cut through those 4-5 spots. Will see how it goes.

    My guess is that the top & body of the dispenser were ultrasonically welded. The only way to open it is cut through the fused plastic as you did.

    Hey quick question here. Mine lights up blue for a brief second when plugging the charge but then goes blank. Is it possible for water to get inside or is it just a dead battery? Also please link the battery where you bought it. Thanks

      A typical symptom of a dying battery. Other symptoms: 1) Works for a while, stops, then functions after 1 second of charging. 2) Starts squirting on its own in dribbles. 3) Battery charges quickly, but doesn't last. Two years of service is about all you are going to get out of the battery.

    Many companies depend on product re-purchases. If a product costs $70 and lasts 2 yrs, hopefully the customer will feel the convenience is worth $35 a year. For this reason, product obsolescence is engineered into almost everything.
