My mother was born in Popoli and came to England when she was 20 to work with her sisters in Holborn at the hospital.
We try and get back every 2 years as we have family in Tocco da Casauria.
Popoli is the birthplace of the Vespa and the bar in piazza pays homage to that with a vibrant Vespa club. It's also where the Pescara river starts it's journey towards the coast. It produces hydro electric power from great pipes which descend from the mountains and has a vibrant market as do most medium towns. It's also the gateway for travellers going the mountain route to Caserta or Napoli.

Thank you so much for all the interesting information! I didn’t know about the hydroelectric pipes. I watched a lovely film about the origins of the Vespa - Enrico Piaggio: un sogno Italiano - have you seen it by any chance? I’ve yet to visit Tocco da Casauria - do you have any recommendations?

@@MyLittleItalianHomestead Tocco has a winery called Terzini which produces the famous Montepulciano and the Tiburtina is littered with vines growing on the hills. Its also famous for Centerba a very strong liquor which some people put in cakes for flavouring or in espresso coffee for a pick me up. The town was a rich town in its days gone by because the whole region around there is full of Olive trees. Close by is a town called Salle which used to boast the highest bridge in Italy over the river Orta. The backdrop is the Maiella and Morone mountains which in spring are full of hang gliders and mountain bikers exploring the Maiella park reserve.
I haven't seen the film but as I have 2 motorbikes and a vespa I will put that on my watch list.

Tocco has the famous Terzini winery where the famous Montepulciano is made. The Tiburtina road has many vines on the hills which go into making these wines. Tocco itself used to be a rich average size town as most of the agriculture was to do with olive oil production and the lanscape is full of Olive trees.. It also famous for Centerbe a very strong liquor which can be used for flavouring cakes or adding to your espresso. Not far away is a town called Salle which used to boast the highest bridge in Italy over the river Orta. The Maiella and Morone mountains can be seen which in spring fill with mountain bike trekkers and hang gliders jumping from the mountains. The Maiella park offers many trails and still has the wolf and wild bears.
I haven't seen the film yet you mention but its on my list as I have 2 motorbikes one of which is a Vespa.

I think the idea of having a dinner with snacks in your cozy hotel room was an excellent one. Restaurants are way more expensive and healthy snack in the right place are just a perfect choice. Popoli looks like a lovely town to visit. I wish I could show my British boyfriend the beautiful mountains, hills, countryside and medieval towns of my beautiful central Italy.

Would you like to move back one day? It was lovely to stay in the hotel room but we did read in the room instructions later that eating in the room is not allowed - oops 🤭!

WOW. Spectacular mountains, valleys and towns seemingly at every turn. Great choice of hotel with the indulgent view from the bathtub perched by the windowsill. The atmospheric vibes from the stone oozing its history and culture must create unique sensations at the wonder of it all. Magnificent 🌹😊Thanks for showcasing the beauty of your Abruzzo region 🥰🌟

May I ask where your favorite restaurant is near here that you mentioned in the video? I assume in Popoli? We booked this B&B after watching your video. Will be there in March for 2 nights. Thank you!

    • @MyLittleItalianHomestead

Oh wow, that’s lovely to hear! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. The restaurant we love is called Lo Zio Barrett is Bussi sul Tirino - it’s a heavily meat-based menu so might not be any good if you’re vegetarian. We unfortunately didn’t get the chance to explore the village where the b&b is because we had to get back for work but I did read there are some underground caves where they sometimes hold concerts and exhibitions so it might be worth checking if there is something on while you’re there 😊
