It is ridiculous that we have to play these games in order to get someone to look at a job application. This explains so much about why I constantly see people occupying positions for which they are supremely unqualified, while the well-qualified ones are never even called for an interview.

#3 - what I like to do is open a tag cloud generator in two windows side by side. I paste the job description in one and my CV in the other and get a visual indication of how my CV compares to the JD. Then I organically tweak my CV to be a closer match, while avoiding #4 because I agree, keyword stuffing is immediately apparent when you read a resume. Oh and also read the job description carefully. I've seen a particular tool or skill mentioned only once in the JD, but it was emphasized heavily, "Must have x experience to be considered". so while "x" may only show up once, it's clearly important to have that.

How does this work when you are switching careers ? Please please help! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video and for sharing this knowledge!!
Use the skills of your old career and leverage them for the new. If you had roles and tasks that are similar in your new career, rephrase your resume to their terminology. Of course be honest about it. I leveraged my old school telecommunications work experience to a new IT career about 10 years ago doing just that. If you need ideas get with people in the new field you want to break into and pick their brains.
Fake it till you make it! Just lie. What do you have to lose? You'll either get the job or they'll know you're full of it and not hire you in the first place. Pluss, if you get interviews, you'll be wasting their time if you don't get the job, and that may be a small consolation prize.
Thanks a lot for the information, I am trying since long but didn't get any single call, now I will update the CV according to your information and will let others to know if I success, wish me luck
Maybe it depends of the meaning of "objective"? If intended as a short description of the role you had it makes sense to have it but if it is something of more of your own it is perhaps best too keep it narrow to why you find this job description attractive to apply for and not be too elaborate about your own more distant goals?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. However, it is sometimes not feasible to look and pick keywords from every job description because it's a lot competitive while applying jobs, as I'm based in India, and I have to apply 100 jobs at times.
Hi Don, thanks for the great information! What happens when you submit a resume and a cover letter, do they both get scanned equally? I often keep my resume generic, but tailor my cover letter with the specific language for the unique job. Will that get ignored by the ATS?
The one thing that concerns me is that we are also in a world of age discrimination and at 50 yrs old I know i get passed up when i have the attributes. They say leave dates off the resume for education and for jobs, just post the years you worked. However, when you run ATS scans, it complains that you need dates.. Personally, I think these free scans always give negativity because they want your business..
Hi Adam! In my recruiting and coaching experience, you should still list the dates of your employment. Generally, you should focus on the last 10 to 15 years of experience. However, leave the graduation/education dates off your resume unless you are a recent graduate. Hope that helps!
I have a question to you sir. I was worked for 3 and a half years in accounting field. Thereafter I have around 6 years of gap for my studies. What do you think about tables? I find that they organize information easily, but I have heard ATS doesn't pick up information arranged that way. What do you suggest?
Thank you for mentioning that keyword stuffing doesn't work. If it happens to pass through the applicant tracking system, this type of behavior certainly won't fly with the hiring manager!

ATS tools can cost anywhere from several thousand dollars to over 100K. If you can afford one of those it's a good sign you don't need to work. A much cheaper, as in free, way to get an idea of your resume versus the job posting is run both through a tag cloud generator side by side. If I were to copy the job description, word for word, paste it in white on my resume in a corner in very tiny size, would the ATS pick it up, and pass it through? And would they be able to tell what I've done?
Well when they post a job online, anyone in the world can apply for it. That's why there's so many resumes to look through. You're competing against anyone in the world. Since they're the one offering the job, we have to do things their way. Nope, employment is a two way street. Without employees you'd have no employers, because they couldn't find anyone to do the work.
