Monia Liter does not seem to have gotten much credit or attention overall - undeservedly so. He had a very small solo-piano output on 78s during the 1930s, all exhibiting remarkable technical acumen at the keyboard. He and Bowlly were longtime compatriots, with Liter serving as Bowlly's accompanist as far back as their unlikely meeting in Singapore in the later 1920s. Liter seems to have gone the route of many prominent 1930s pianists, ending up as a conducting and performing workhorse for things like the BBC and the British film industry. He did publish some solo piano pieces, and some serious concert works later in life. While Bowlly died in the London Blitz, Liter lived until 1988. There are about 6 sides of British Decca 78s with Bowlly and Liter as a piano-and-voice combo. These are generally mic'd up close and personal, and are quite good. All are from 1933-1934, if I recall rightly. These include this very tune, in a slightly different performance. Liter's keyboard work is very INTENSE and punctuated - he seems to come from much the same pianistic tradition as Rachmaninoff and Lyapunov. Given how successful Billy Mayerl, Patricia Rossborough and Raie da Costa were in the UK, I'm surprised Liter didn't have a similar spate of success in the 1930s. He's clearly capable and intuitive enough as a performer in the idiom.
Two great artists - Al Bowlly is a strangely modern singer - that style and voice have not dated - I know a few young people who while it is not their music - appreciate his talent - for all I have said - he is both modern and an icon of the 1930's - a pretty good trick
Oooh, how wonderful it is... no "sharp corners" and such a magical "entry into the scene" - boys running in, a quick tangle of fuss and instant suspension/distancing of the audience - when Al throws a hat at us (throws it into the outside world) - this is such a simple and such an effective gesture.... aaaaaah! - brilliantly. An insanely beautiful scene... You remained young and beautiful, Albert Allick Bowlly, at the age of 43, having left this world. Thank you very much, wonderful Al, for continuing to please and warm with your voice and your songs. 1934... and there's still a year (or so) left before Elvis shows up 😊 • Thanks, thank you, Philippe! 🌿
Very cool! I've been listening to Al Bowlly for years....after discovering him in "The Shining", but this colorized footage just makes it so much cooler. Thanks!

I have to say I am very impress by what you did with the artificial intelligence. You not only gave hommage to al bowlly, you also brought him to life again with such an amazing quality. Of course I watched others of your videos and of course, as a french I watched Claude François and Mike Brant but I have to say even these 70's videos do not have better quality than this one (fortunately as I prefer al bowlly from far). If you can do another miracle and enhance with same quality the other video Al Bowlly appear : "Melancholy Baby" that would be so great because I really think he deserves to be recognized more and he is a little forgotten unfortunately. I know there is another video with color but there is no comparison with your work. Thank you really for what you did
@@thefiyoumovies
