Sharpness from Alnico V but maintaining vintage output with that gritty treble bite. Love 'em.

Where the neck joins the body turns out to be one of the best design elements The access is fantastic so much better playing sitting down that a les Paul and standing up the body is so thin and light you can play them for hours

    SGs are under rated. Wanted one since I was 13 (because Angus) and finally got one at 44. It's a shame that they're ONLY associated with AC/DC and playing slide. More brightness and bite, more comfortable, better upper fret access than a Les Paul. You can get a nice sparkly clean sound out of them if your amp isn't dialed into the mud but you almost never hear them played that way. Kinda Gibson's Tele because you really can play anything on it.

    Just wanted to say, I do have that version of the regular standard sg and I believe Gibson states on their website that those are their 490t and 490r pick ups, just if anyone was curious. Iv had the experience after mine hearing the 61 standard to sound a bit dark like I couldn't brighten it up with the tone controls either. Love me an sg, to a nerdy degree lol.

    • @InGrindWeCrust2010
      @InGrindWeCrust2010 3 года назад

      The Standard used to have 500T and 496R ceramics, but that may have changed. '61 reissue had Classic '57s and the Studio, Special, and Classic had 490T and 490R. I thought those were muddy as hell. Apparently you can make them brighter and more full/articulate by swapping in Unarticulated Alnico 5 magnets. Sold my Studio long ago or I'd try it.

    • @InGrindWeCrust2010
      @InGrindWeCrust2010 3 года назад

      @Shaun Verne Sure. They also have a "Classic" model that I believe was the one shown in this video, with the 490T and 490R pickups. It's not that they're dark, they're just not very good with the stock magnets and stock wiring.
      So, next you can consider the different parts of your guitar signal chain: pickups AND wiring, cable, pedals, amp, and speaker...or preamp and IR / computer interface, if that's how you roll. There are a lot of opportunities to darken your tone along the way, so the guitar becomes a bit less important, even if it's a factor. Personally, I think a decent EQ pedal like an MXR or Boss is an essential part of any guitar rig.
      I would say to buy the color you want, and if you just can't make it work with the guitar, you can change the pickups and electronics at that point. It's not an expensive change to a guitar, FWIW.
      There are other SG models to look at, too: Special, Studio, other colors and editions that just came out for a year or two. Personally, I also really like the LTD Viper and Guild S-100 Polara models, which are similar, and you might find some cool options there, too. And you could always start by buying used if you're comfortable with it.

    • @InGrindWeCrust2010
      @InGrindWeCrust2010 3 года назад

      @Shaun Verne All I'm saying is, if there's a color you like, go for that guitar, see how you like it, and worry about changing pickups, electronics, etc. after you play it with your own rig and hear them with your own ears.
      Classic, Studio, and Special with humbuckers all have 490R and 490T or 498T. I don't like them personally and I think the potentiometers Gibson uses with the wiring makes them lack definition. But if you can do simple soldering, you change the pots and wiring and change the magnets in the pickups for like $35, so it's not a huge deal.
      FWIW, even if I could afford one of these T-Top editions, I'd still change the electronics, because I'm fussy. Other people are fine with the stock electronics.

    • @InGrindWeCrust2010
      @InGrindWeCrust2010 3 года назад

      @Shaun Verne not with any guitar...but again, you might like the sound of a guitar stock and not want to change anything. And maybe get an additional, different sounding guitar down the road. My tastes have certainly changed over the years.

    Just to say that T-Type pickups are now the standard fit pickups on ES-335 and ES-335 Figured models in the Gibson range no matter where you buy them from. Maybe the CME version of the pickup has some other tweaks, but I suspect it just turned out nicely in the CME guitars so Gibson decided to fit it to some of the ES models as standard.
    By the way, when travel is allowed again you Anderton’s boys should head to Chicago. CME is epic but when in Chicago make sure you go to a Lou Malnati pizza place (there are several in the city)... they make a great Chicago style pizza - none of this Papa John’s nonsense! 😝

    I'd love to hear Pete play my 1991 TV Yellow Gibson SG Special. I am the original owner, and that thing has the magic. Everybody who plays her, falls under her spell. Although I've been playing guitar for 35 years, I am nowhere near the player Pete is; and would love to hear what tones he could coax out of her.

    If Andertons continues collaborating with CME to bump the custom order size/lower the costs ... How about creating a stronger Gibson headstock? One that players don't fear to drop, kick, ship, or gig with? Lower headstock angle like Epiphone, Scarf joint like Epiphone, a heel-access truss-rod so no wood is removed at the typical break point, and perhaps even a controversial volute. Then prove you made them stronger with Timex-style durability testing in the studio or on-location. Then Pete plays them to prove no loss in awesome tones. Part II: save the environment with more locally sourced and faster growing woods that get the great tones too! Help Gibson design a better guitar for the future. Traditionalists looking back can always buy the weak headstock models they need and experience the shipping drama of broken headstocks when trying to sell them. Good times for all.

    It's great that the SG's are still popular, since they have that classic rock sound, which doesn't seem very popular these days, and is us old 80's guys bread and butter. I've played a few, but can't get to the upper frets because the horn is too small for my hands, same with a 335, so I don't own either.
    Pink is pushing it a bit too:)

    The process Lee is describing is the same as if you are in the UK and buy from the US. I would guess it would be similar buying from EU countries. I bought a guitar from California the other week and had to pay UK VAT plus about 3% or so import duty. It is all smooth and well organised. I'll still support UK shops as a first port of call but it isn't such a big deal if you can only get that 'must have' second hand guitar from abroad.

      I found an early 90's SG in this color about a year ago on reverb, it was love at first sight 😊. I call it tank green, although i think the official name is olive green 😁. Such a pity they put this style of pickguard on this version, It looks beter with a black one i think.

    • @mariodriessen9740
      @mariodriessen9740 3 года назад +1

      @Floris Backx : It's Olive Drab Green. I believe it's the same colour that the US army used for their vehicles and other military stuff. I love it!
      I think the tortoise looks great on it, but I'd probably replace the pickguard for either a chrome one, or a rusty brass or copper one. 😍
