STORYLINE:
Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf stepped down from his powerful post as Pakistan's military commander on Wednesday, a day before he was to be sworn in as a civilian president as part of his long-delayed pledge not to hold both jobs.
During a change of command in the garrison town of Rawalpindi near the capital, Islamabad, Musharraf relinquished his post by handing over his ceremonial baton to his successor, General Ashfaq Kayani.
In an emotional final speech to the troops Musharraf said they were the "saviours of Pakistan."
"I will be no more in uniform but this army will always remain in my heart and mind and I will always think about you," Musharraf said.
Musharraf's retirement from the military has been a key opposition demand and the move may help defuse a possible boycott of parliamentary elections in January by parties opposed to his rule.
Since seizing power in a coup in 1999, Musharraf has served as president while retaining his post as head of the armed forces.
The move, which ended his more than 40 years in the army, casts him into uncertain waters, with rivals snapping at his heels and the militants he has sworn to fight after the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States contesting ever more of his country's territory along the Afghan border.
Musharraf had promised to give up his army role at the end of 2004.
But he reneged on that pledge, saying the country still needed strong leadership in the face of Islamic extremism.
He has given it up now, in line with the constitution, only after securing a fresh term as president.
He was re-elected by Parliament in October, but his confirmation was held up by the Supreme Court following complaints that a military man could not constitutionally serve as an elected head-of-state.
Musharraf reacted by proclaiming a state of emergency on November 3, sacking the chief justice and other independent judges and replacing them with his appointees.
The reconstituted top court then approved his election.
Officials have indicated that the emergency could be lifted soon after Musharraf takes the presidential oath, but have not set a firm date.
The hour-long ceremony was held on a field hockey field next to the military complex headquarters.

He might have been a dictator, but it was Pervez Musharraf who allowed the establishment of a free, fair, and transparent media. He is the only leader, who allowed local governments to have financial and administrative autonomy, something which our current, so called "democratic" political parties, are not very fond of. There was so much more that could have been achieved.. For example, the construction of Kala Bagh Dam project; something only a dictator could have managed to achieve. However, he chose the path of appeasement, instead of boldness.
Still, he's much better than the rest of the leaders that we have currently, even Imran Khan, I'd say. The only problem with Musharraf, is that he will always be considered a 'Dictator', despite entering the political arena. His party is basically a one man show. Thus, it is highly unlikely that he will come to power again through the electoral process. He had his chance, and he blew it up the moment he give up his powers to Kiyani. He should have never done that.
time has proved that Mushraf is the best ruler ever. All of his decsions proved right. He is the first one who kicked corrupt judges out and he made sure merit in Pakistan. TOOK 3 years extension and remained Chief for 6 YEARS, during all these years, people whose turn was to become Chief or have higher ranks, missed opportunities because this man stopped the flow of promotions. When an interior minister complaint about how bad a road with bridge his brother, who was given contract has made, HE replied "so next time do not give him contract", this was a cold threat. HE TOOK REGULAR money from Future Concern Associate, a fraud visa and human trafflicking illegal business operating from Lahore Cantonement, the area which comes under ARMY, SO he had army protection. Thousands of Pakistanis especially poor lost money to this con firm, poor people lost houses, they had kept as collateral to take money, all people were desperate to leave Pakistan. As CNN correspondent asked then Prime Minister Gilani that most Pakistanis want to leave PAKISTAN, HE rather being ashamed said to .uitter surprise of CNN correspondent" let them" , SO MUCH for government head🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. WHY governments are formed, IF they have no concern for PEOPLE, same is army. Not one Chief has come, who had knowledge and was sincere with Pakistan. The GENERALS, politìcians, Bureacrats, judiciary and their accomplice in other organisation loot and plunder people of COUNTRY, who cannot have enough money to marry off their daughters, as in this country it is parent responsibility. They cannot make two room small house, as unlike.in West, their is no conception of mortgages. We ask, HOW these people.of most poor country and corrupt human resource buy houses , farms and flats worth millions? Something terribly wrong, WHICH ARMY generals as have learned of comfalouge and concealment have concealed many secrets well. This is cesspit of corruption and life of common man is hell, every new day is worst than yesterday
