Awesome project wood!! The way you treat it (Stain ,fire treat, oil) it gives a fantastic look to any project!! I really like black walnut n black oak for projects..( furniture , arrows, frames for art, artful shelving) and more!! ........... 👍🐺🧙♂️🦊👍 .....
Very pretty grain on the Black Oak. Em, you are correct, the Black is in the Red Oak family but still a good source for strength and beauty! White Oak seems to be the best!
Very pretty grain structure, Black oak is an interesting tree being as it grows up and down the east coast and far inland. In the south most of the Black Oaks grow up but not very much out limb wise it has a lot of tannin in its sap and is referred to as, 'well lets put it this way Cats Litter Box without litter Oak" it may not do that up northern states don't know for sure. when they make acorns they are big but bitter tasting. If there are White Oak acorns around nearby animals will pass over them until there is nothing else left then they will eat them. Ya'll do excellent work and the lumber will make some very nice projects. 🤠
Thanks Jade and Emerald for another excellent video. The patterns in the black oak are beautiful would make good looking dressers and tables. I hope you both have a fabulous day.
I have milled a little California Black Oak. It was before I got my WM LT40, so I used my Alaskan mill. It wasn't fun. I even bought a new ripping chain for my saw just for those few logs. It didn't help a bit. California Black Oak is considered low grade oak, not for furniture quality work. It is very porous and coarse grained. There used to be a mill near Redding California back in the 1980s called CalOak. It milled black oak for "filler" wood. Furniture manufacturers would buy it and use it in specific places in furniture that did not show. The furniture piece would have either white oak or red oak in all the visible places and then black oak in the rest. This way, the manufacturer could sell the piece as "solid oak" or "made of 100% oak." They would also make oak plywood with a veneer of white or red oak and core laminates of black oak.
I think you should compile all your knowledge into a book you could title it Emerald and Jade's complete guide to saw milling. It would be on the best sellers list I am sure. The Black oak would make a beautiful dining room table, great looking grain pattern.
That's the kind of life I like. Fresh air, machinery, physical work. It's good for the health. You seems all to be nice persons as well. Keep up. Hope you the best
I'm not sure if it is the same thing but around here on the coast of NC we have what we call black jack oaks, very hard wood often full of large grubs and it makes good fire wood.
@@jeffwolinski2659 I looked up the tech name long time ago but couldn't remember it I just go by what the Old timers around here said (which were around 40 years my senior and I'm 67) all of them called it Cat Shit Oak and we burned it for firewood often, it was also found in the Nevada area according to an Uncle, he didn't like the smell either
I have long asked for a simple sweeping of the board and then a bucket of water -that will high-lite the grain perfectly. That will satisfy many of the questions and requests in the comments. Do this on every new species and milling cut-C'mon girls!
I love the black oak!! That is some beautiful wood!! Very nice 👌!!! I happen to work on some very high-end homes and the trend is walnut doors, white oak cabinetry, and white oak floors. But the white is a flitch cut which looks like vertical grain. Both are going for top dollar. Oddly they don't like quarter sawn oak, of which I think looks just as pretty!! I love wood. It's fun to work with. And there's a million things you can make with it. You guys mill some beautiful wood. If I was in your area, I would be a buyer!! Keep up the good work 👏!!!
The first shoe where I cut black oak I had a dispute with the mill. I knew what we were getting fi red oak My pay didn't reflect that we had sent twelve loads of oak to the mill. My friend, the scaler, gave me a lesson on the difference between nice red oK and black oak. Black oat paid like pallet logs, only just over half what I thought I was cutting. The only thing that pays less than black oak in thT family is the pin oak. In the woodworking shop, I would prefer the pin first, then a nice black oak and last the red oak
@@alithemagicbum No problem, not trying to be snotty, but I do a lot of botanical surveys and management plans and write up reports, I'm a stickler for spelling!
I get just as excited by the beautiful grain and utility of the lumber when it's milled as you. Never lose that, but have a backup plan jic you need it later in life, e.g. get yourselves a "useful" college education. Your channel is just as fun to watch as milling the logs myself on my mill.
Black oak never heard of it before. Tell me some thing about it. I M in California. Where does it grow. I am a wood worker and cut lumber with a chain saw. Just never heard of black oak. Loved the pieces you showed. God.bless your family. Love your video's Tom
One thing you could do is when you mill a unique wood species you could dump a 5 gal bucket of water on top. It will show all the great colors in the grain. I build epoxy tables and that is how I determine what the finish product will look like. Just a suggestion
Here in Tennessee we have many. About 30% from my last logging was black oak. Not popular for furniture. Used mostly for rough cut barn boards , rail ties and mine shoring. It’s like a rock when it’s cured. Fox out
I just cut a black oak for first time. It had a more yellow inner bark and medulary rays which made me first think it was a white oak. Ours was a river bottoms tree that had very wide rings in early and late wood. I used wood database website to positively ID it. You can use the food 10x power on your phone camera to match their endgrain photos.
That first log look really twisted good job! How does the bossman tell between white, red and black oak? The bark and the wood look similar. Love you guys. Smile. 😄
The bark, the color of the heart wood vs sap wood, the grain, the leaves, all of that becomes 2nd nature if you work in the woods for any length of time. I’ve been out of the woods for 25 years but can still spot species even when still standing
Very nice looking wood. I've not seen black oak before. It would look great as a dining table. Are you going to dry any of it and sell to craftsmen/women? Hope the Bosses goal of selling to that group is working!
I use these videos like cat videos, very calming, too bad they go quickly. I noticed one of the first cuts the board had a notch at the end, will you trim that up?
My last name is Schwarzwald from the Black Forest of Germany where we make Cuckoo Clocks and other wood projects. Here is some videos from some of the places
Like the white, black oak is very rare in Central Europe and only occurs sporadically in parks. Although the tree is hardy and could survive well in our climate. Strange isn't it!? For this we have a tattoo studio “Black Oak” in the city, which paints the young crazy people. Is something or not.
Black oak? We called cer, lemn de cer. Sky wood. Is strong is beautiful it is having ink inside and it is not soo resistant to stay into the rain but for the inside places where it is not getting wet is going well.

Must have been a cold day as Jade is well covered on her face. Interesting wood... Too bad one more step of planning the lumber to dimension would really make the Oak shine.
Just curious. Have you ever cut Sycamore, and if so, what do you think? As far as I know, it's not cultivated much and might be uncommon in your area. Anyway, thanks for the videos, for telling your story.
Thanks!
Great job Emerald and Jade
I love your families passion for wood. I mean I love to see anybody passionate about the work they do, Always a joy to watch your videos.

We have Black Jack Oak in Texas as well we use it for firewood
Blackjack oak is Quercus marilandica, a smaller more scrubby tree, black oak, Quercus velutina, is a large oak similar to red oak.

Hello Ginger. I'm glad to see you're doing well. Thanks for sharing another great video showing your woodworking skills. 😍😍👍👍
I love this grain, make for a nice table top
That fleck grain is out of this world!
Black Oak is a beautiful wood. Great job. I have to say that you guys are very efficient with the woods you cut. I like that.
Beautiful wood! All the furry edges (according to an earlier video with your grandfather) means the blade is getting dull, right?
My question also!!???👍🧙♂️
I noticed that also 🤠
It CAN mean that the blade is dull, but not always
I'm guessing some wood (like elm) will be stringy even if cut on a NASA sawmill.
Not necessarily. I see a lot of fiber pull like that in soft wood even on brand new blades
Quercus Valutina.... Eastern black oak, found mostly in Eastern and Central US, hence the name!

Sometimes called yellow oak because it has yellowish inner bark. Red oak has pinkish red inner bark.
