I think the best thing I learned from minimizing is what I actually like and use. There were so many things I owned just because I felt like I “should” have them. For example, skirts. I’m not a person who enjoys wearing skirts. I don’t know why, I just don’t like them. They sit in my closet and don’t get used. I prefer dresses or pants. But I used to think I should have a few because what kind of a professional wardrobe does not include any skirts? Now that sounds silly, but at the time that is how I was thinking. And I learned there was a lot of stuff that I held onto just because I “should” have it. (According to who? Who knows?) Wine glasses, although I have literally never served wine in the 18 years we have been married, health supplements, high heels, certain cleaning products, makeup products, etc. Accepting who you are and what you like and know you will use is a huge confidence boost, saves so much money, and avoids excess waste.
I learned that I'm not really sentimental at this stage in my life which was quite a surprise. At the beginning of my journey, it was more difficult to discard items that my mother or grandmother had made (but were ruined from being stored in boxes for 40 plus years!). Nowadays I have to be able to use things not just admire them. My memories come from reminiscing with friends and listening to favorite songs, not touching or displaying objects. I know some people struggle with this aspect of minimalism but as you said, everyone is unique.
I am the same way that you are - and honestly sometimes it annoys my relatives who are more sentimental about physical things. I enjoy having a couple mementos from the people who were/are special to me, but I don’t need to own everything they had! ❤️
I think you are one of the best youtubers in this minimalistic area. You are so wise. You are clear and calm in your presentations. I love your videos. You see the correlation between the outer and inner world. You realize what's happening on a deeper level. That's what I like and that's what I search for when I am watching RUclips. Thank you. What I have learned over the years, is that the more I get rid of, the easier it is to get rid of even more. Now I have come to that stage where I want more of that feeling of freedom and satisfaction when I realise I'm complete. I am. I'm a human being not a human owning or human doing. I am. ❤ Ulla-Marie
Your home is so endearing and inviting! It is clearly the perfect place for you and your family. I aspire to be that organized! What I have learned: less is more.
This video was so thoughtful and thought provoking! I love this caring approach to promoting minimalism. The last point especially struck me because so many people define themselves with clothing or by having a huge collection of books or other items. Your point that everyone is a complete person and unique and worthy without the stuff is pretty powerful.
Good morning🌻 love the freeform video, about 3/4 of the way in I was remembering my backpacking days,- with the ethic that each item must be incredibly functional and often multi-duty, then at the end when you were bringing up the vision of an empty room, it really made me smile- because it made me think of a certain kind of Zen in the magic of no counters- no cluttered countertops!
Good Saturday morning to you, it's a lot of story to tell, i,and a friend,i - traveled-hitch-hiking thru new england up to P.E.i. then that summer went across the nortern u.s. n down the west coast then we flew home from L.A. bcuz robyn was starting school at SUNY Albany,- meeting the most amazing people traveling this way and sharing some incredible experiences, then... I took a formal year leave of absence from being accepted into the Culinary Institute of America this was 1972, I was interested in communal living and arrange to live on a kibbutz in the Negev dessert n southern israel for a year Kibbutz Revivim, famous for Golda Meir having been a member there, I traveled across Europe in the same manner both ways of my stay in Israel, having great experiences such as getting a ride from a leather designer from Turin Italy in his Ferrari with me on the front seat with my backpack on my lap doing 160 mph on the trans Europa Highway with him yelling out at another car at the toll booth because he could see that car at a license plate where I was going and getting me a ride with them or getting a ride with a true Gypsy Caravan sitting on their hay cart or simply rolling up in a tarp to sleep for a night in a farmer's field all the time spending 5- $10 a day, then flying back from Israel a year later living on the Cove of a small Greek Island for 2 weeks oh and on the way down through Europe to Israel traveling with a girl whose father had an international business partner in Munich stayed at their very special house for the Oktoberfest anyway maybe you were more interested the minimalism of backpacking, this is my longest text ever, it's funny looking back I was not used to having extra money or didn't have any fussy needs like perfect hiking socks or sunglasses her sunscreen or anything, it's a very special experience traveling in that manner
It began with downsizing and after that it was Swedish death cleaning. This is what I've learned: you are never finished, but it becomes easier and easier. And stop impulse buying!
When you look at your “stuff” and have buyers remorse or decluttering regret, give yourself grace. You made the decision based on the information you had at the time and the season of life you were in. YOU JUST DIDN’T KNOW! You didn’t know the future! Life is a journey of trying. Another revelation was Identity and fantasy clutter. Life is change, and your seasons of life will change so your things of life will also change. Keep the best of what you have that reflects who you are now and makes you feel your best. It is so freeing to get those “silent” negative messages out of your life! Thanks Angela for another great video with you. I love Tuesdays 💗
@@ArrowHillCottage and stating that we are valued in an empty room is such great encouragement 💝 I’m so very grateful for you and the blessings that you pour into the lives of others. Thank you 🙏🏻
I still get angry about a laser hair removal thing that cost $300 and didn’t work at all. The positive reviews had to have been fake. After a few months gave up and now it’s in a landfill somewhere never to biodegrade. 😢
I started my decluttering journey in 2018. I didn't have the goal of "minimalism" as you said with a specific number or absolutely nothing in my home. I knew we were going to downsize and we had way too much. It is very freeing to declutter. Less stress!!! I know my home is right where I want it for the most part. No one would say Im necessarily a minimalist when walking into my home but hopefully they sense the calm and order. 😊
I'm a minimalist living with a hoarder. Said person is now in the hospital so while she recovers I'm decluttering as much as I can. She won't be happy but It has to be done. My minimalism saved me.
😢😮I would feel betrayed if u did that TO me-- my stuff, my decision ! Especially from being in hospital 😮 Perhaps u could gently guide her into decluttering a little at a time so that she can feel that it is her decision ! 😊❤
@@katbunn957clearly you haven’t a lot of hoarders in your life. Sometimes there is no guiding them, they need professional help. That said, I don’t think going behind their backs is the answer either…. they will just hoard more.
I really needed to hear this today! I added a few more pieces of decor that I am so excited about but somehow I felt it t wasn’t minimalistic enough. I felt like things just didn’t look right. But on the other side, we were able to donate other things that needed to go. I just love your channel! ❤❤
@@ArrowHillCottage It definitely is! When I lack energy, I turn you, Joshua B, or Dawn on, and after a couple of minutes, my motivation is usually back:-).
You make on going renewal in my journey. You have certainly worked tirelessly for years to keep us encouraged. Speaking of what You have done for me its like visiting my twin sister who always had my best interest at heart. She went to Heaven in 2005 and I am still grateful for having Ruth in my life and You have over these years picked up where she moved on. I wanted to wait a few years to say "Thank you Sidter" I Love how Your Husband and You respect one another and how You raise Your fine family !😊

Yes! That is a great lesson learned! I’m the same way with skirts (and jewelry too) - they just aren’t for me, and that’s ok! ❤️

Exactly! You have brought the number of belongings down to a level that is comfortable for YOU! And that is what matters most! ❤️
I bet I could live off only 10% of everything I still own, but a lot of the extra stuff gives me joy!
