The estate was brilliant, just about roomy enough for 5 adults with a decent boot, and a good range of petrol and diesel engines, but for economy the diesels were somewhat better, and showed it too when load carrying, with all the rear seats folded flat or towing a caravan or trailer. Diesels cope better with a full load of people and shopping or luggage, and make good load lugger for regular tasks ie trips to the DIY store, flat pack furniture from IKEA, taking things to the tip, getting home that new telly or washing machine from the shop. When the turbocharged Isuzu diesel unit was introduced, it added a good bit of pep, with a swift(ish) 0-60 time, but still with decent fuel economy.
Other than a 2 door hatch (which would have sold by the million) South Africa got the best of this generation of Astra. We had (all 5 door) a 2L 8V hatch (Kadett 200is) a 1.8L 16V hatch (Kadett 180is) a 2L 16V sedan and 2L 8V sedan, 1.8 8V sedan and 1.8 16V sedan (all Astra), then we got a once off, South African only production run of the Kadett and Astra, the mighty and very fast 200TS, they took the engine, diff and wheels from the Calibra 4x4 Turbo and fitted them to a front wheel drive hatch and sedan...very limited production and now very very collectable... We also had both hatch and sedan in 1.4L and 1.6L... They were EVERYWHERE from the early 90`s until very recently...
Miss Vorderman was never driving that Astra. .... The prop car was being pulled on a trailer as you can see be her fake and unconvincing hand movements to replicate actual on road conditions.
Airbags came a year later, but came prepared for safety, with side impact bars, seatbelt pretensioners, and pedals that collapse preventing foot leg ankle and thigh injuries.
i had a mk3 astra for 6 months years ago it was the worst car i have owned it handled like shite horrid seats that were to high the cabin was narrow i hated it, it was shit to drive , no fun i had a mk1 astra and it was much better
I still can’t believe how good looking the Calibra was.
Thanks for the upload, think I've got the press pack for a mk3 astra somewhere!

Great cars back then unlike the hideous scrap they made now in 2024

I thought so too
What an unfortunate button arrangement on her jacket.
No twin airbags in those days (her and the car)
