He's a master (He trained as a canter), but the show's producers turned on autotune without his permission (Conan apologized for it). This is an absolute masterpiece of a performance. Paul Simon wrote a warning for us in the 60s... and David Draiman screams in frustration that we ignored it.
Thank you! I've watched both of your reactions-on the official video and the live version-and I must say it's one of the best reactions to this song I've seen so far (and I've probably seen about 100 of them). I've noticed that, for some mysterious reason, Disturbed's The Sound of Silence resonates especially deeply with men over 40 and 50, like myself. I still get tears in my eyes even after the 200th listen, and I love what this song does to me.
if you know how David Draiman sounds normally you will be able to hear that he is sick, but he is such a professional he still sang it beautifully. a real trooper.
It gets me the same way that the unplugged version of Pearl Jams Black- dang these amazing guys who do this stuff while ill and still sound amazing. -I do agree that you can hear that he was ill if you are familiar with his voice but it works...
They used auto tune in a small part because he was suffering from a cold when he did this performance and he was pissed, he didn't want them to do that.
Yeah he wasn't very happy about the auto tune. The producers didn't think he could hit the high note so they did it. He always said he wants his songs to sound the same live or recorded. Just a beautiful voice! I got so excited watching your reaction it gave me chills . and teary eyed as I always get lol
For any who have seen Disturbed live, David Draiman is always a rare treat. His vocals are on point, and he sounds as good live as he does in his recorded versions. He is a perfectionist and doesn't disappoint his audience with substandard vocals. The guy is so gifted and his range is mind blowing.
I just wanted to add since after scanning some responses that David was classically trained in Israel as a Cantor. His vocals are amazing because of it and can go fromm those deep baritone to high tenor without strain. Add in the vocal grit and fry and well... honestly this is my favorite version of the song and Paul Simon even said the song is his now. I am a tough Ole battle hardened firefighter and this song brings tears to my eyes and chokes me up every time.
ABSOLUTELY loved your reactions! My favourite between the two is the Conan version for all the same vocal reasons that you stated. I have not been able to hear this version without tears. The sheer masterly of his control puts me in awe of him. Knowing he was sick that day makes it even more incredible (and no, he DIDN'T need the auto tune they stuck in.) The S &G version was a warning, this is the reaction to the fact that it was unheeded. Also, a comment I read elsewhere said "God asked David if he wanted the voice of an angel or a demon and David answered, 'Yes, please!'". Best explanation I ever heard for his voice!

I’ve loved the original Simon and Garfunkel version since I was a child in the 60’s and avoided listening to this version for years as i thought nothing could touch the original. More fool me. This version is MAGICAL and I love it, what a talent ❤️.
Paul Simon wrote an email to David Draiman when he saw this on Conan. "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." David replied with the following; "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/us and we are eternally grateful."
To be honest, I like this one the most, original comes second and pentatonix the least. I generally like their covers, but this one felt underwhelming.
i happened to be watching Conan this night and I was just speechless. I love the original, but OMG this is something special. Someone said the Simon & Garfunkel version was a warning, and this is raw anger that nobody paid heed to it.
I learned this recently. In his younger years, Draiman was classically trained as a cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue.
S&G in all actuality get credit as song writers for this song. This is my opinion only…. David and Disturbed knocked it out i out if the park!!! Paul Simon even promoted and put it in his social media.
The guy you're pointing out in the Conan Live version of Disturbed's Sound of Silance is Dan Donegan the Lead Guitar player for Disturbed. And the guy drumming the Timpanis is Mike Wengren the drummer for Disturbed. Super talented musicians, could play just about any genre of music.
His voice kills me on this song. I think it’s nuts that anyone would think their auto tune would be better than anything this guy could do naturally. I’m old and not a acid rocker but I’ve played this song 100s of times. The hair on my arms stand at attention too! Amazing
The guitar player for the band really wanted to do this song, when he approached David he said he didn’t know if he could slide up so many octaves like that, he went into the studio and practiced and got it down. And was proud of himself he could do it, the fact the producers of the show slipped in the auto tune without his knowledge due to the fact that it got out that he had a slight cold he felt was an insult. He was not happy about it. He’s a trained vocalist he knows what he’s doing.
I have listened to.andvwatched this Conan presentation over a 100 times and I can't get enough of it. I love the lights and especially the voice of David. He hypnotizes me every time.
Actually a thing I want to point out what he does that not a lot of singers don't, he keeps his eyes open most of the time. That's what makes this story he's telling so captivating.
I read an article after this performance came out and the band was not happy because the TV station added a little bit of Auto-Tune to the final production.
Wow Wow Wow I thought there is no way, can he be as good live as on the video with those unbelievable visuals. But wow, with the orchestra, drums and it being live was just as good in a different way. Love the way you talked through both videos, but your emotion on the first video touched me.
So I was one of the few lucky people who watched this when it originally aired cus I was a huge Conan fan . And I was excited cus disturbed was on. However this song had not been released yet by them, so no one knew what he was gonna play. I remember mid way through the song just standing in my living room being like what the actual f*** is happening right now. Still to this day I think this is the best performance on any talk show or taped show that has ever aired.
This version moves me every time I hear it. In my view, Paul Simon’s words were absolutely prophetic. Together, He and Art Garfunkel presented this song to us as a warning, bathed in the honey of their incomparable voices. Now, 60 years on, comes Disturbed. The way they present this song brings us the realization that Paul’s prophecy has come true. “And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made” and “Fool, said I, you do not know. Silence like a cancer grows” also “People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening”. Aren’t we there? We communicate electronically every day. We find love online. We now work from home, shop online and text our family members in the next room. We rarely even call each other any more. We worship our cell phones even when we are face to face with family and friends. I’ve spent entire days where I’ve “talked” to multiple people, yet never used my vocal chords even once. There’s so much more. This brilliant version moves me in ways few songs have.
and then the Pentatonix version is the hope for the future. I saw this in another reaction vid and being curious searched it out and it does very much come across that way. Effervescent, like the arrival of spring.
“People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening” To me, this means something different than you described. This is the political state we're at. In the political realm, every day people talk without really saying anything real. But more importantly, is that people hear what they want to hear. They hear someone's argument and read what they want into it. That's the people hearing without listening.
As a metalhead, as most of us would I appreciate your willingness to delve into our world and music that makes our souls come alive!. Dave Draiman is incredibly talented and legendary in the music / metal industry.
I watched a vocal coach react to this masterpiece. She commented on his choice to sing on the n instead of the vowel on silence, stating that it gave it a darker sound to match the dark meaning of the song. Hope that makes sense. She also caught the auto tune. Love your reactions.❤

I head you say you don’t want to overload on one song from one artist, but there is now a live performance of this with Myles Kennedy singing Garfunkel’s harmony. It’s probably the best version yet. The resonance between the two is something that can’t be of this world, but it is.
In another reaction video the guy slowed this version down to half speed and was using some software to analyse it. He then explained how the auto-tune becomes obvious when you do that. It's no bad reflection on David. He didn't know they were doing it beforehand and he was a bit congested. He still managed an all round stunning performance with subtle yet dramatic differences to the studio version.
As this version was the first confrontation with Disturbed's version of Sound Of Silence, I never felt the urge to check out the musicvideo. It was your reaction to it, that invited me to. Then I also was very impressed with the buildup and the imagery of that video. Still I am always going for the live music prior to the videoimages and studio recordings. And a live version like this is quite rare to begin with. As for the autotune, it was used sparsely because David was sick, he had a cold, I believe. You have a great ear for detail! And when he came in with the first line, you actually hear him fade in on the word 'hello', maybe to make sure he'll hit the right note at once? Thanks for taking the advice many of us gave you to react to this performance. I can't get enough of it.
This song is such a treat to my ears, emotions and soul I've listened to this over and over the last few weeks. So beautiful. If there was auto-tune it wasn't by David's request. Perhaps the show did it, but I agree he is the last person that needs it.
David Draiman....an unbelievable voice...whether singing in clear angelic tones or rasp. A voice that is one of the few on the planet that is instantly recognizable. I can't believe his "control" and the amazing tonal qualities of his voice! Loved your reaction to it Larry....was mine also. Try David's latest release "Dead Inside" with guitar diva Nita Strauss. If you haven't already heard it....it'll blow your mind. It's "a bit" heavier than this one....lol. Btw....the "guy playing the piano" is Dan Donegan....Disturbed's guitar player!! ....and yes, is tall guy reaching in video!
Hello Larry Another setting, another moment, but the same great interpretation - just extraordinary And yet another extraordinary reaction - you are so attentive to detail and so sensitive that it wins me over more and more Be alright. Take care of yourself Big hug from Brazil
You just liked my comment on your original reaction of the official video and I again love your reaction. It’s hard to find the words to describe how this song and specifically this version, makes you feel.
You sir have an incredible ear for details! Hats off to you sir!! In my 54 years of existence, I've come across people like you who made me either mad and/or a better singer. God bless you brother!👍🤘
In the Music video the one playing the piano is the one carrying the Guitar. He is Dan Donegan, he is the guitarist/keyboardist of Disturbed. Mike Wengren is the one carrying the drum in the video, he plays drums for Disturb. Their bass player is John Moyer and of coarse the vocalist is David Draiman.
He was sick with the flu but performed exceptionally despite it. The show producers auto tuned, he wasn’t consulted about that. Needless to say he wasn’t happy, his voice doesn’t need auto tuning. He’s also got a live concert duet on the Internet without auto tuning and it’s also a brilliant performance 👏👏🎶🎵
There is auto tune on this. It was not present for the audience, it was added in post production by the show. They always do that with tv. You can see him doing this completely live at their concerts though and it usually sounds just as good. He did this as a duet with Miles Kennedy a few years back in Houston at a concert and it is phenomenal! The vid is on RUclips. I'd definitely recommend checking that out, it's just amazing
I've seen many Tubers who have disproven the auto-tune theory, but also many that have proven it. So go figure ! At the end of the day, David Draiman had the flu the day of the recording and is a classically trained Cantor, so he can certainly use that voice of his.
That's definitely the guy from the music video. I've watched this video probably 100 times and never noticed! It's amazing to always be finding something new still
Adding to the stage setup and beauty, live in concert, the piano Dan is playing has flames coming out of it. Absolutely my favorite band to see live! My wife doesn't even like metal, and she was blown away by David's stage presence. You should check out the live version of "A Reason to Fight." it absolutely brings me to tears every single time.
His tone man....his TONE is freaking ridiculous. And you're not over analyzing the vocal inflections. The way he sings "silennnnnnnnnnnnnnce" gives maximum effect to the delivery. I love it. Now let's talk about that rasp.......😲. Btw, I love how you're all giddy at the end...lol. I was the same way.
I feel like the video tells the meaning of a world with without music and lack of communication. And the live version brings the beauty of music alive.
I actually find it difficult to compare the two versions. The music video had a LOT to say in the imagery. This live version had a LOT to say based on the music, and the .. "presence" of the band and performer. It's just two amazing takes on exactly the same music, and I definitely like both for what each uniquely offers.
I truly enjoy watching your reaction to David Draiman. I've watched pt1&2. I am with with you...one visually and two vocally. Love David Draimans voice. As others have said in other utube reaction vids. He has the voice of an Angel and a demon. Yes PERFECT
Yep...pure visceral joy watching YOUR joy!! Ps no...you are NOT overanalysing!! *Jumps up cheers with Joy!* LOL! LOVE YOUR REACTION! BRILLIANT! And love your take on the visual importance:) XXX XXX
The orchestra - nice touch. Singing with a cold makes your voice deeper, that's one of (the many), reasons this version of the song is so good. 'n got a trillion views.. lol
OMG I watched your reaction to the video and I have watched many, I absolutely love your interpretation of that, you missed NOTHING, and you are the only one that saw or spoke on the ending of him giving his gentleman's bow at the end, which was a great way to end this masterpiece. Top notch reaction, thank you sir. I'm a new subscriber from Tennessee.
SO glad you took my recommendation! They got a Grammy nom for this and he was very sick! PLEASE react to Roxette. If you're not familiar with them. Listen to your heart is a great one to start with 😉 the lead singer, Marie, passed away on 9 Dec 2019 after a long battle with cancer and a brain tumor. She could sing the phonebook ❤️❤️❤️
7:20 "Pull up the bows, go ahead and get that ready. We're about to rock the world here in a second." I must have watched the Conan version a dozen times but never noticed the orchestra getting ready to unleash their magic. You have great attention to detail that adds a bit of richness to the Conan version that will make it that much more enjoyable the next time I take it all in.
Although I have watched the music video several times this is my favorite by far. Thank you for the reaction. The auto tune controversy pops up time and again on all reactions for this particular video. My only reaction is... I don't care one way or the other. It makes no difference to me.
Where David sings, "and the people bowed and prayed to the neon g-d they'd made", I think Draiman's Jewishness comes out especially in those words, since the first time we were liberated from Egypt, some of the people worshipped a golden calf. In this song, they're bowing and praying to a neon g-d. Not much difference.
Loved your reactions to this song...both the studio version and this one. I never get tired of listening to this song. I have listened to it hundreds of times and it gets me in the feels every single time. David's voice and his ability to draw you in and LISTEN to him is next level. Not just with this song, but with every single song he sings. They are typically a MUCH heavier band. I would love to see you react to Indestructible or The Light next. Both are very powerful songs with positive messages. And, of course, the videos deliver the message perfectly.
I had the pleasure of seeing Disturbed back in 2008, i took my son for his 16th birthday, David is a true professional and awesome vocalist. Wash your mouth out Sir, No auto tune here. I have seen hundreds of rock bands live and my only disappointment was actually Bon Jovi.
David Draiman was very sick at the time he performed this. He does not auto tune. He is classical trained. Just an amazing, muti vocal talented, amazing talent like no other

I LOVE Disturbed and hope you do more from them! The Light, or, Hold on to Memories for original lighter side, or, Down with the Sickness, Inside the Fire, or, Stricken for their more typical sound. Thanks for the informative and interesting react/analysis!
The tempani drums in this are absolutely everything 😍
I love how relaxed David is at the beginning. Almost like saying to the audience "Sit and relax, because I'm about to blow your f@ckin mind!"
And I'm so jealous of the audience because they experienced it firsthand... amazing!

All the goosebumps no matter how many times I watch this performance.
One of the best live performances I've ever seen
Had to share the Simon and Garfunkel, Pentatonix and this Disturb version with my kids. All beautiful versions. Love this
David is such a professional he took over 70 takes to make this masterpiece happen, even tho he was sick😁
David's grandfather, father, and himself were all trained Cantors.
A Disturbed song with great meaning, react to “Hold on to Memories”.
Love that one
That will be played at my funeral
I played it at my mom's funeral
If you think this song is amazing go to the second album there is a song called The Darkness
Love that song!!!
This performance is beyond words, a true master of his craft delivering an absolute musical masterpiece! Truly outstanding!
Absolutely brilliant rendition of this song. Love David's voice and the buildup. Such a powerful song! Perfect!
Both versions are absolutely wonderful in their own ways. The video tells an amazing story, and this one shows amazing emotion and vocal control.
Hello Larry
Another setting, another moment, but the same great interpretation - just extraordinary
And yet another extraordinary reaction - you are so attentive to detail and so sensitive that it wins me over more and more
Be alright. Take care of yourself
Big hug from Brazil
I couldn't imagine what it must've felt like to experience that in person. My God.
I prefer this version to the studio.
Thanks for your comments!
Thank you sooo much for enthusiasm in reviewing songs! You bring me tight along on your journey and I love it!
I just commented on the first video you did of this song that this was my favorite version.....and here you are reacting to it. You the GOAT.
I need to second the Myles Kennedy suggestion. Their duet is incredible, and I’d love to hear your take on it.
the most astonishing thing about this performance that not many realize is ... he was singing all of that SITTING xD
And sick
I get it. In the video, the images told the story, but in the live version, it's his voice and the instruments that did. Both equally amazing.
THANK YOU for reacting to this version too! I love this version the best! And, I enjoy your reactions very much!
Thanks so much!
An the most amazing thing here is he was sick while singing.
Paul Simon heard this cover and he said it's the best he's ever heard he's going to put it on his playlist on his phone
The guy pulling out the drum (which was actually a Timpani) is Mike Wengren, who does drums, percussion, backing vocals, and programming
You're correct. The visuals of the video deliver the message of the song better obviously. You go on an emotional rollercoaster with the video.
SUCH an incredible version!
EXACTLY!
BRILLIANT!
And love your take on the visual importance:) XXX
XXX
Thanks so much for your kind words!!!
another pure and genuine reaction, love love love❤😍
this song is still a hidden gem that many people still havent stumbled upon
The orchestra - nice touch.
Singing with a cold makes your voice deeper, that's one of (the many), reasons this version of the song is so good. 'n got a trillion views.. lol
Even better than the studio recording!! 👏👏👏
Thanks so much Linda! This song was absolutely perfect...
Love this song and this version...
Love from Texas,
Robin Cartwright
7:20 "Pull up the bows, go ahead and get that ready. We're about to rock the world here in a second." I must have watched the Conan version a dozen times but never noticed the orchestra getting ready to unleash their magic. You have great attention to detail that adds a bit of richness to the Conan version that will make it that much more enjoyable the next time I take it all in.
I loved you review. Out of all I watched you explained the video and the music and it was actually one I enjoyed
I get goosebumps every time i hear this. I love it.
Great reaction! You were dead on with the N in silence. It definitely allows for a more powerful delivery.
Paul Simon heard this version of The sound of silence and he fell in love with it said he's going to put it on his playlist on his phone
David Draiman was very sick at the time he performed this. He does not auto tune. He is classical trained. Just an amazing, muti vocal talented, amazing talent like no other
He had the flu when he did this and still went on to do a fantastic performance.
Those drums are right behind him! He must have good ear pieces in, ha! Absolutely amazing!
They headlined louder then life last year. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING…he’s a little sick here lol
I have to tell you, I just found your channel today and I absolutely love you! You are so adorable. Your kid(s) is/are lucky to have you as a dad. Keep up the videos. I truly enjoy watching them.
Thanks so much!
I LOVE Disturbed and hope you do more from them! The Light, or, Hold on to Memories for original lighter side, or, Down with the Sickness, Inside the Fire, or, Stricken for their more typical sound. Thanks for the informative and interesting react/analysis!
