Boston Dynamics 2021 - A Glimpse At The Future of Robots?

  • Boston Dynamics are leading the development of a new generation of robots and how their 2021 unfolds may well have a big influence on the future of robotics. As we transition from narrowly capable industrial robots, to generally capable and agile robots, a new platform that could shape the future of mobility emerges.
With other companies just as Unitree, Ghost Robotics and Agility Robotics, the stage may be set for a new robot revolution, but what does the future of robots actually hold?

Well, CMIIAW, you say that {usable, reliable, durable, autonomous, adaptable, enough powered, affordable, intelligent, whatever-needed} Robots are a thing of a somewhat foreseable future. Ok, this is not an information, this is just a promise that has been given, again and again, to no avail. I am sorry to say that this video does not learn us anything. This is over and over again the same promise we have been given for the last fourty years. I am just tired of it.

Yeah. AI and robotics go together. Computer vision is right now one of the most researched areas because of self driving, medical diagnosis etc. Once computer vision gets really good, the understanding the environment part would almost be solved. The next thing would be categorisation of behaviour/properties of objects and how they go together. Once we solve this, robots will be able to do a ton of tasks in very dynamic environments of all sorts. Battery tech is another related area I think and it might improve a lot this decade. Then we have 3D printing which can help robots develop arms specialized for specific tasks.. For example a long arm for cleaning difficult to reach places.

The cost to create one's own chip, starting from just a wafer, and then etching and depositing layers, is EXTREMELY expensive - starting from the many tens of millions to over a billion dollars. There has to be a large commercial market or a military budget for this. I question if even Tesla went this far. However, there are intermediate solutions. The least expensive are FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). Another level of customization are ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). My guess would be that Tesla would use some advanced variant of ASICs, although given they're market is potentially millions of very expensive products, their market might justify 'ground-up' customization.
Any company could afford FPGAs and the software used to 'program hardware'. Programming tools such as 'Verilog', System Verilog, or VHDL are typically used. ASICs require a tooling charge that's commonly in the tens of thousands of dollars and up.
While Hyundai could afford making their own chip from scratch, the economics has to justify it. FPGAs and ASICs can offer very close to the same performance as a custom chip, and allow one to more readily make changes/evolutions than a complete custom chip.

I’ve been noticing several robot blurbs just in the last few days, transitioning from a “what next?” frame of mind to realistic Acceptance. It’s truly amazing how far they’ve come in a few short years. Humans are helpless in the face of technological temptation. Toolmakers. Robots aren’t going away and will only get better, long as we are capable. So. How to direct this great tool chest? My first inclination would be to harness A-I to figure out and tame the atmosphere. That is our most life threatening challenge. Other than each other anyway. This is our only true planet, even if Mars has some wee potential. We’ve got to keep this or deserve extinction. Not a choice, as they say in pre-school... After that I might consider swarm computing a mobile, sub space sun shield. Rather than a curtain of static curtain pieces. You would build the techno capability up by creating a mid space cleanup crew for the satellite garbage patch we’ve created. Can’t trust US anywhere... such a dirty swine herd, smart as we might be, lazy tendencies. Since all the jobs will be taken human babies will require a tutor. After ones parents, and with, the few children will require the best of an education. No more messing around with chance and folly. Each child will deserve a robot tutor, at birth. To be their leg up on the world, theirID/vote, their phone and internet connection, their life witness and best friend. Perhaps more so than the Mrs. and visa versa. Perhaps. What could consciousness evolve to? In the human/ robot interface? Might just be Our savior and messiahs. Like everybody’s great uncle SPOCK... Might be a good thing.

I think it's clear that any significant level of intelligence on a mobile platform is a pipe dream for the foreseeable future. AI is just too inefficient and hardware/energy intensive, and it's only getting worse as the models grow more complex. The most likely progression I see in the near-mid term is platforms like Atlas and Spot being linked into a network, capable of the basic autonomous navigation they are now, with anything more than rudimentary decision-making and executive control being done cloud-side.
