I've only tried one bike with a quick shifter, a CB1100 the Honda guy explained what it was and how to use it but strangely i never did on the test ride. Couldn't get out of the habit of 50 years of using the clutch. I did buy one but not with a quick shifter. Being a Honda fan boy I do like this bike, it's height wouldn't bother me as I'm 6ft but the screen definitely would and the colour, the white one being so much better.

Hi Ian, yes, this was my first proper play with a quick shifter and you can quickly get to like it however, like you, I haven't had one for 40 years and it seems strange to use this new way of working the box. Not sure it is needed on this type of bike - a gsxr maybe, but not this bike for sure. I am convinced all bikes in 10 years will have a quick shifter - time just moves on I guess 😆. The white blue and red version is the better colour for sure 👍

As I approach 10,000 kms (6,000 mi) on my new Transalp here in South Australia, I find some things in your test I agree with, and a few I don't. Of course, an hour's test ride can't give detailed impressions, and we wouldn't expect it, but I don't find the windscreen as bad as you did. Perhaps it was more windy on the day than you realised. I am just over 5' 9" (177 cms) but don't feel 'buffeted' as you found. I was also surprised that you found the Transalp seat height taller than your Tiger 900 - perhaps someone had turned the preload up on the Transalp you rode (or let down the Triumph).
But you repeated the wrong torque figure three times (65, rather than 75 Nm) which was a bit disappointing! As to the headlight you weren't able to test? It not only looks a bit odd, but isn't much of a headlight either unfortunately. But at 70 y. o. (and in a 'roo danger area) I don't often ride it at night. I agree regarding the firm seat, and was contemplating having mine reworked, but as the miles go by I am less bothered by it. Either it is softening up, or I am! I have done a couple of 700+ km days on it. Likewise the zzsh zzsh sound of the engine, which fades as the miles pass.
As to "Transalps being designed for the Dakar"? No sir. No Transalp was ever designed for the Dakar! From the two 600s I first saw at Silverstone in '86, to the one I just bought. Green lanes, yes, Dakar, no. This bike is primarily built for going long distances, mainly, but not necessarily, on sealed roads. It is dirt road capable, but too big and heavy, and poorly suspended, for anything serious off-road. I have done well over 1,000 kms on dirt, and it is fine for its price, but some suspension upgrades were always in my future plans.
But your impressions were largely correct - it is a very useful and 'friendly' bike to own - and are delivered in a gentle style which is easy to listen to. The 'life advice' at the end quite a nice touch. Thanks.

Hi Pat, both me and Andy were surprised at the turbulence but as you said, an hours ride only shows so much. The conditions on the day were quite calm. The bike was certainly much taller than the Tiger and you may well be right, the dealer may well have jacked up the rear suspension. The suspension on the Triumph is as is should be for a lone rider.
I too do not ride so much at night, I know my sight is not as it was when I was 25 😆. Thanks for correcting on the torque, appreciated. I was thrown the bike with three mins notice 😆. I guess I could get used to the seat however I was getting a bit of a numb bum which continued for the remainder of the ride on the Tiger.
Overall - this is a great bike. The engine, the suspension, the weight, it's all great. The fuel economy (for todays world) is great. The price, that's even better to be fair. Like I say, the screen could be changed if needed, and the seat, well........just slap on a bit more cream for the piles 😆

at this price range, couse i cant affort more,i m thinking to seriously for this bike.i like tenere too,but after a test ride on a white rally,i was dissaponted.the wind noise was terrible, the seat wooden, and the susoension firm too.the new vstrom,i sat on one at a dealer, too bulky, too wide hadlebars, too wide seat that give a very hight feel to the seat.and also those frond looks, awful too.ktm, aprilia,i ll stay away for reliability issues.so,i m to go for the transalp, always in this price range.i m more a on road guy so i think the choice will be good.i am 5.10 and i want good air protection.i think i ll be good with transalp.the only thing that i concerned, is that lack of low end grund that many say.what your opinion on that?

    • @patkennedy1
      @patkennedy1 3 месяца назад +1

The low-rev power delivery is a bit deceptive Thodoris. It feels quite gentle at first, but is stronger than it seems. It pulls from 2,000 RPM pretty strong in all gears up to 4th, just needing a little more revs in 5th and 6th, but the low end power is actually quite good. It is better on the dirt than an engine that rips too much from low revs, as it is easier to control when setting off in tight places. Take one for a test ride and decide for yourself. Some say the low end isn't that strong, but I have never found it lacking, and my (1100 cc) road bike has masses of torque from low revs. The clutch and gearchange play a part in its ease when setting off, and I have never stalled mine in (now) 11,200 kms. The power seems to come on gently, but builds quickly as it revs. I love a lot of low end torque in a motorcycle, and have never been disappointed by the Transalp.
It is a very easy bike to own. Enjoy your test ride.

    • @bankruptpensioner

Interesting, I have been asked this recently. Start of the season I guess 😆. OK, it is the Richa Phantom 2. Costs about £170. If I lost my jacket today, would I replace it with the same? Yes I would. I think it is a mid priced jacket and does everything I need. It is long enough to give good protection but not to long to get in the way of the hips etc. It appears very waterproof. The liner keeps me warm on those cool days however on the really cold days, I take my liner out and where my Keis heated jacket (including the arms - not just the body warmer) and this is just perfect. It's great around the neck when wearing a balaclava. My summer gloves fit well inside the jacket with the zip at the end of the arms and my winter gloves go over the end of the sleaves reasonably well. Due to the slim fit, it is easy to put a waterproof kagol type jacket over the this Richa jacket when riding through a storm. Hope this helps 👍

Ironically, Andy who was riding the bike originally started complaining about the turbulence from within the first 200 meters, then basically threw the TransAlp at me and said, "here, you bloody ride the thing if you don't believe me" 😆, after he dismounted rubbing his backside from a slight numb bum 😆

Good bike at price point it's at but I'd be missing the cruise control just getting to the south coast. Seat comfort and wind shields are very personal to your size/weight etc. imho. Sounds like a perky motor coupled to a decent quickshifter for when your traffic light GP focussed or mountain hairpin riding when they'll be really fun. I think quickshifters are generally a £200 ish option plus fitting costs. Nice review.

I had 3 of the old Transalps, but dreamed for Africa Twin at that time /20-ish years ago/ .. A bit frustrating thing about the new one is that most of the stuff that the old ones had, it's aftermarket here.. Big bash plate for example. The windscreen problem is 'normal' on new bikes. My opinion of them is have nothing (or very short one) or tall enough to make your riding more silent for your height and nothing in between. Mid screen is just concentrating the wind on your helmet and making it worse.

I'm hesitating between Honda Transalp and Triumph Tiger 850 sport. They have a similar price here in Spain. The 850 is essentially the same bike as the 900 GT, with the engine 'detuned', no cruise, a smaller display screen with less fancy electronic options. Contrary to the Honda, the Tiger has tubeless tires. Which one would you choose as a touring bike ?

Hi there, on the same boat with you. I'm having a really tough time making a decision. I think that for my height (1,84m) the transalp felt a bit better. I drove both the 850 and the new 900 GT pro and my knees were moving back and forth on brakes and acceleration. The 850 was a bit better due to the slightly different design/plastics I think. Let me know what you decided! Both engines are great with their own unique character, triumph's probably more ADV style but I loved the 750 as well. Triumph also gets the adjustable screen which is really nice but on the other hand you get the "old" engine and the "old" dashboard. Not sure how well this bike will "age". I think they will probably stop this version in a couple of years.

I was thinking of buying one for a trip to the Pecos in July so I hired one from Motohire Spain when I went to Malaga last November. My first impressions were pretty similar to yours but I grew to dislike it more as the week went on. For a cheap commuter it would be ok but once you try to push on you very quickly find it's limitations. The soft front suspension is non adjustable and was far too soft for spirited riding. The forks would bottom out and then rebound giving a pogo stick effect. For me (85kg in kit) they would need thicker oil, a reduced oil gap and probably heavier springs. The parallel twin engine has power but lacks low and midrange punch. You could ride around both of these issues on open and mildly twisty roads by getting your braking done early, drop and flop through the bend, and then wind it up on the way out. However, most of the roads we were riding were blind bends up and down mountain roads and the bike was truly awful on those. Trying to push it beyond its comfort zone had the front tyre skipping sideways a few times and I found it better to just cruise along in its comfort zone which was a bit more sedate than any other bike on the tour (BMW's). If I had the option I would happily have exchanged it for something a bit better suspended after the first day. Like you, I would not want to tour on one unless I spent money on the suspension and there wold be better options at that budget. The other things I could not get used to was having the mode selector when you would usually expect high beam and the horn button where everyone else puts the indicator, neither added to my riding enjoyment. I would like to try the Hornet but don't really need one as for the Transalp I would happily never ride one again.

All fair comments but I would like to point out that pre-load is adjustable on the rear shock AND front forks. I weigh more that you but have only put one notch of preload on the rear shock so far. The biggest improvement by far that I made was throwing away the Karoo Street tyres at 1000 miles and putting Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 tyres on it. The bike feels so much better in turns and pulling out of junctions etc. I had no confidence in the front end before that. The engine does lack low down grunt and isn’t ideal for the style of bike, overall I do really like it but it’s not love as it lacks a bit of character. I’m off to the Pecos later in the year so I guess that I will find out. 👍
