Inside Celebrated Designer John Pawson's Cotswolds Home Farm

- We explore minimalist designer John Pawson’s Home Farm in Cotswolds, England.
One look at British designer John Pawson’s Instagram account, with its staggering 443k followers, reveals one of his passions to be photography. The feed is a celebration of light and its effect on materials, landscape, interiors and buildings; there are few words, and only intermittently featured is his lock-down puppy - a cockapoo named Lochie. “Although the aesthetic strands running through my work are pretty consistent, the influences feeding into the design process are typically eclectic, and even the most unlikely subjects can provide food for thought,” he says. Of late, the images focus on Home Farm, their country property located in the Cotswolds. Once a derelict series of rural buildings including a 17th-century farmhouse, cottage, stables, a barn and pigsties sprouting giant hogweed, there has been a complete shedding of generations of detritus, an architectural paring back combined with a considered material insertion and careful planning of spatial flow.
The connection of the farmhouse and barn creates a 50-metre span, and so a kitchen was installed at each end to serve different purposes at different times of the year and for varying occasions. A small-scale traditional kitchen with a pantry in the farmhouse (cosy in winter) and a larger, more open kitchen in the converted barn suits large groups of family and friends, especially in summer. A third kitchen is in the guest quarters, in the Wainhouse (originally for wagons and carts). “Long before the work was finished, four generations of our family had sat down to eat together at the table in the barn, and the list of significant occasions that have been celebrated here lengthens from month to month,” Catherine says.
John Pawson is often referred to as a minimalist which can be misleading. His spare and reductive aesthetic is imbued with the warmth of his nuanced material palette, and a carefully calibrated sense of space and light ensures beauty is omnipresent.
“We found an aggregate that is local, so it’s similar colours to the Cotswold stone, although it’s modern concrete and it bands,” he said. “We put down a concrete terrazzo floor that was the same greys.” Elm, a timber originally used in the house, was sourced; breathable lime plaster covers walls and furnishings throughout are restrained and beautiful - from Hans Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone chairs to a Swedish Gustavian sofa sourced by Catherine.
During the weeks and months of lockdowns the UK has experienced, the Pawsons have been totally immersed in Home Farm, by the architecture itself and by the surrounding countryside. “You find yourself quietly observing the house,” he notes, “the way the light moves across a section of wall in the course of the day - but there is also a sense of being reciprocally watched over by the house, as the new routines and rituals of everyday life become more deeply engrained.”

I'm struck by the irony of the Kahn quote "No architecture without natural light" yet he finds himself most effectively designing his own stunning architecture in a windowless basement studio without natural light. Wonderful interview!
The honest, personal nature of the interview is revealing about how John approaches all of his work - regardless of scale.
It's a pleasure to listen to John speak about the history of Home Farm and how he approached the architecture and design. Reductive but never dull; warm but always subtle.
John's Home Farm reflects a beautiful architectural paring back combined with a considered material insertion and careful planning of spatial flow.
It's a privilege being let into his serene world.
John's approach to clarity and calmness in design ensures the light and connection to place is ever-present.
I think this is the first time I have seen a respectful modern residential take on an old house. I usually see contrasts in volumes and grotesque shapes added to old structures fighting with each other, but this home... feels right.
A beautiful reflection of how minimalist spaces can be imbued with warmth and a nuanced material palette, respectful of the original building's heritage.
Leave it to John Pawson @@est_living
After looking at 100 designs occasionally one will step out as magical and fab and this house is one of those. As someone who is the same age as this gentleman it always surprises me how guys let themselves become physically these frumpy old geezer men but mentally they still produce these young fresh magical awesome designs.
Interesting to know, your assessment stands out. No one else has described this home as magical and it truly is. Stay tuned, team estliving.com
Many moons ago when I studied Architecture and Interior Design, John Pawson was one of my favourite Architects, still is. I admire his restraint and play on light. Beautiful.
Thank you, so evident too in his film. You’re not alone, a favourite to many. Enjoy..
Breathtaking. The film work did the farm justice. Great job.
Thank you for your wonderful words Cameron, stay tuned for more films to come. Best, team estliving.com
Such a privilege to learn from John Pawson and see inside his own home. An inspiring insight to design and minimalist living. Beautiful home, adore the garden and the swing too. ❤
The film is a beautiful celebration of light and its effect on the materials, landscape, interiors and buildings at Home Farm.
Thank you for your expressing your thoughts. We couldn’t agree more. Achieving this through design takes incredible talent. Enjoy. Thx, team est living ;)
Serene atmosphere is fascinating.
We couldn't agree more, very calm and beautiful design.
The architecture is so considered and landscape is perfectly serene 🍃
The architecture is like a 'light box' as John says, instilling a quietness in the design, and constantly inviting the outside in.
beautifully shot
Dan and Jack filmed captured this beautifully. Thank you.
Peaceful ❤
A minimalist peaceful design.
Just love this simple look. Very airy, light beautiful home. Gloucestershire is such a stunning part of the UK.
An idyllic place to spend time in the English countryside, framed by John's subtle design intervention.
Both the building and the surroundings are so serene and beautiful. ❤
Five years in the making, the beautiful house was built to unite friends and relatives in a bucolic, simple setting.
Lovely. Pawson’s work is so relaxing in this. God, I’d love my home to be this serene.
The film really transports you to the serenity of Home Farm and how John spends his time there.
All areas and rooms promotes peace and tranquility. 💖🪴
Simplicity achieved through his design promotes peace in the home.
Sleek, clean lines, crisp, calming color palette and materiality 👏🏼
As John says in the film, a limited material palette can free the mind.
Natural selection in motion with the tadpoles fighting for their lives! 😅 5:07
A true countryside escape!
Beautiful home and that's a very good dog! 🐕❤
Thank you very much!
...Breathtaking... 🌹
Many thanks!
John Pawson, what more can you say! As a daughter of an architect, all I have heard about is how important natural light is. would love to visit this home
Thanks for sharing!
Peaceful beautiful quiet place. Heaven on 🌎🇺🇲
A beautiful home
Perfect serenity
Pawson perfect.
Просто мечта!
lovely
A superb home, excellent to film and share.
Perfection !
Glad you think so!
A transporting interview with John & an insightful peek into his creative world - and home!
Thank you. A true creative inspiration, it is the seemingly simple questions that underpin John’s work - questions like ‘What will you see from your bed when you wake in the morning?’, ‘Where will the sun be as you eat breakfast?’
The moment I’ve been waiting for!
Enjoy this very personal tour of Home Farm and the insight it offers to John's design ethos.
The simplicity of this home is so calming, this is a wonderful watch!
The magic of his first sentence ..."I prefer things simple” is the premise of his new visual biography written by architectural historian and longtime friend Deyan Sudjic, aptly titled John Pawson: Making Life Simpler. You would very much enjoy the book too.
it speak right to my heart
so beautiful 🥰
thank you for sharing 🙏
The spaces are wonderful. I love the serenity.
The serenity is unmatched - John's quiet design only accentuating the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Such a beautiful project. Perfect minimal design.
Home Farm beautifully articulates how John has captured England's light and seasons through his signature minimalist design.
Lovely.
Lovely through every season.
This is so beautiful! It made me happy to see so many colors from the books (at the end of the video which I assume was the office). The natural light is so calming and being so close to nature is such a treasure. Thank you for sharing this home with us ❤
The way the natural light shifts throughout the day is beautiful. Yes you're right, John is reading his new book called 'Making Life Simpler'.
simple monastic elegant functional!!
It really is!
What a beautyful home...❤
We agree!
Perfection ❤️
Thank you!!
You can't underestimate how much you truly learn from an architect with this sense of grace. I could watch this over and over again and still learn.
100% true, such a privilege for John Pawson to open his doors to us all. Stay tuned for more films. Best, team estliving.com
Absolute Perfection.
Pawson perfection.
The master of simple design
An absolute stand out designer.
Perfection perfected. Nice video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice shelves
♥️♥️
spettacolo puro. ma le cotswold e gli edifici esistenti fanno il resto... Grande amico di Bruce chatwin e james Ivory
My minimalist mentor from afar!
A master of 'making life simpler' through design - which happens to be the title of the new book he speaks about in the film. Enjoy this personal insight into how his home reflects his minimalist approach.
One of my favorite architects, the house is simply and gracefully designed!
So pleased you discovered the film, we agree exceptional designer and home.
I love this idea of returning to a more minimalistic lifestyle. I’m not there yet, but I am very much into using organic materials and bringing the outside in.
Wonderful!
Even his dog fits the palette😂
Lochie the cockapoo sure does!
Very peacefully !
Peace and serenity
We should all start a GoFundMe for John. He must be finding the cost of living crisis difficult
,bless him.
I've worked in the advertising industry most of my adult life and I can't believe that the media buyer for St Modwen Homes has booked a pre roll ad against this wonderful post. Why anyone who has watched the video would then be interested to know more about the awful lego like boxes that St Modwens use to destroy the visual culture of the country escapes me completely
Hello, were did you buy the carpet that look like in jute or other material ? Thanks
What is the track/music in the first half of the video? It's so calming.
I hope the garden was a bit more interesting! As a garden designer I can feel the potential of that
outdoor space!
Interested to know.. what would you do with the landscape design? The lake and swing are so peaceful.
@@est_living There is way too much grass in both the front and rear garden. There is almost no interest apart from the climbers (that are quite young). Having a minimalist simple (and beautiful house) doesn't mean that you have to have grass all around the perimeter. It is boring and not good for the environment! A white theme planting scheme for example!
cool
Stay tuned for more cool… thank you, team estliving.com
Oh. My. God!
Divine in nature and design
What are the shelves @3:56?
It's beautiful, but get the dog a cushion, please.
3:56 Anyone got any info on that floating shelve bookcase? Is it Pawson's design?
I believe it's a Donald Judd design (Pawson uses his designs quite often).
@@danieldavidsonn I rather assume that these "floating shelves" are an idea from John Pawson. Especially as I have never seen such a shelving system in any of the Judd interiors or books. It would also fit in with John's "keep it simple" approach if (aluminum?) profiles were mounted on the untreated wall, which were then plastered flush.
Who produced those Swedish sliding windows ?
Thanks for asking we will aim to source for you.. enjoy the film.
Peace
Peaceful design in its purest form.
you know this dude throws some wild parties
Would be fun to join them! ;)
I think I saw at least two Donald Judd pieces of furniture. Well of course Judd was quite the opposite in his home life and collected avidly, in fact his son Flavin described him as a maximalist. Those photos on the floor need to go up.
Spotted well… ♥️
Whats that thing on the table… while the walls do need some paintings
The local project woz ere
Hey Will how can we help?
This beautiful house is lacking of house plants😅
Cold, inhospitable, almost algid. The few and far-in-between details that could make the living spaces more inviting, such as the wooden exposed beams and some pieces of furniture, are not enough to render the whole space actually livable. Architecturally exquisite for a house, terribly barren to be a home.
Those untrained in architecture or interior design would probably consider the buildings here ruined by the installation of modern glazing and the pursuit of the 20th century obsession; space. There are intellectual arguments against this: these buildings have never known conservation (it being a modern concept); buildings have always been adapted to prevailing tastes; homes are not museums, etc.
However, I am one of the unwashed who regrets that the souls of these building have been eliminated on the alter of taste and design. Heritage is something to be cherished- If you want a ‘modern space,’ build a new one, I say. Still it’s the man’s castle and thankfully he can still do as he pleases.
What exactly did this guy design, plywood? 😂
Very minimalist?
The king of minimalism
Surprised to see so many positive comments. Proper wanky this, looks uncomfortable and empty. Good luck to him though, seems happy enough
despite the outside having such character and charm, the inside is left wanting... feels sterile, like a museum and not quite conducive to dwelling
Beautiful building character.
“I prefer things simple” is how John starts talking about his home in this film. Such is the premise of his new visual biography written by architectural historian and longtime friend Deyan Sudjic, aptly titled John Pawson: Making Life Simpler.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it's what makes this platform so great.
Wonderful....other than this freaky foreboding A24 synthesizer soundtrack....smdh, so off-putting. ...makes me feel like any second he is going to reveal a basement full of malnourished Scandinavian children in tattered pastel-colored ACNE clothing..."Ahh, yes, and these are the Dreamweavers"....(slams door shut)...." now let me show you the garage that was formerly an 18th century stable for prizewinning polo horses ..."
Awful , done to death , white walls and a bit of timber thrown in . Soulless
