Bishan used to be a huge cemetery. To build Bishan new town, the graves were exhumed, many of which were placed at the Peck San Theng Colabarium (also in Bishan - they have a heritage gallery). Kong Meng San is very famous (you can ask your wife or mum in law). It is both a temple as well as a columbarium. There is a huge Buddha statue in one of the halls which you might have missed (or the hall is closed due to covid). During Qing Ming festival, many of us will visit Kong Meng San as our ancestors' tablets are placed there.
My great grand parents were buried in Bishan. The area used to be called Pek Shan Teng 碧山亭, Jade mountain pavilion. There were numbered pavilions throughout the cemetery, and you located the graves using the pavilions as markers.
the story of roti “john” comes from back in those days, the ang mohs love bread as u may know so they asked a street vendor if they could have some bread so the pakcik just threw in anything he has into the bread and called it roti “john” bc apparently thats what the locals use to call the angmohs
光明山普觉禅寺is the largest Buddhist temple in Singapore and used to be very popular with tourists. Many years ago the tv station used to film period dramas there too due to its architecture. The best time to experience the grandeur is during Vesak Day with its praying procession. But since it’s COVID they probably won’t be doing it this year. You visited the columbarium/kitchen side. Try to go to the main hall and it’s surroundings. It’s very peaceful in the day.
Hey you are in Bishan! There's so many things in this area! the accessibility to parks and reservoirs, yummy food, home to bishan otter family and a taiko school! :)
You ought to visit Kong Men Sen during Vesak Day at midnight, it really does come alive. Even if you or your family are not Buddhists, it's a worthwhile experience in my opinion. Provided they can still operate as per usual this year.
It's a columbarium so i honestly wouldn't recommend tourists to visit there unless they wanna see some spirits, also it's super crowded during qing ming or the tomb sweeping day.
@@lyhthegreat columbarium is just part of the temple itself, they probably only took up 10% to 20% of the whole plot of land. So I don't think it can be considered as a columbarium. Located in Bishan HDB Estate, Natura Loft is a Design, Build and Sell Scheme (DBSS) development that houses a total of 480 units in three residential blocks.
After the covid pandemic visit the temple again during Vesak eve night and Vesak day as they have the 3 steps 1 bow procession. Also on Sunday at the Mercy hall they have the Western Paradise chanting - go check out
You should try Sin Ming Prata at 24 Sin Ming Road, which is just a short walk slightly behind The Roti Prata house next time! The coin prata there has the right amount of crispiness on the outness and fluffiness inside. So delicious and sinful at the same time.
Omg! I live so near Natura Loft! I've been living in Bishan for 10 years and I've never seen a such a detailed video on Bishan! I also visit the market you visited almost everyday! By the way, the Monastery you visited is also a Columbarium.

Prior to Covit-19, the temple was usually packed with acttivities and lights on Vesak Day. It is one of the biggest Buddhist Temple in Singapore and the temple conduct classes on Buddhism. There is a large empty hall where you can see one of the largest sitting buddha statue (a couple storey high) and from there you can view the entire bishan estate. I've just been to Bishan Park two nights back. There is a spa, a western food and a Japanese restaurant within the park. Check them out near evening. You can see both their day and night views.
Used to go to the temple for prayers as a kid and offerings to ancestors. They have free vegetarian meals on certain days if I remembered correctly. Then I found out my mum was brought to the temple as a kid for Buddhist teachings and meditations (she fell asleep lol)
Hi Bro, you visited the new part of Bishan. There is the old part at the Junction 8 side. But nothing much there except for a wet market ( even more kampong feel there) with lots of local foods and the beautiful park connector with man made rapids along the canal. The famous food in Bishan should be the chicken rice at Kim Sang Leng coffee shop at block 511 ☺️
Kong meng san means "bright hill" hence the new Bright Hill mrt station being built nearby for the Thomson East Coast Line.
