Probably talking about someone he opened up to, cared about (which my guess is that rare) and said person only used him for their benefit. Took what he gave and used it against him. Once you tell someone else a secret it’s not a secret. Especially if that persons perception of you shifts and they aim to humiliate or hurt. Usually a desired person that doesn’t share your same feelings.
Used you as a shore to crash all their problems upon, makes them feel better and leaves you, alone.
There’s so many ways to interpret lyrics it’s never certain. Only he knows really.
It’s just a theory of mine but the image that this song gives me is NF staring at his reflection but what he sees is himself or a younger version with scars and bruises like the pure image of his trauma with just the bad things, but I can also see it in reverse that his trauma asks him to „why can’t you just love me back?“

God. When the violin comes in I feel like my inner self starts to release the emotion and I can help but close my eyes and imagine me right in front of my future and past self. I think that since the melody of the violin starts to kind of fall and rise it makes me think that it's kind of like NF looking at his future self and once the melody starts to get lower it's all this pain and hurt that just wants to be gone. forever. it's like he's just this puddle of water, on a cloudy day, with no sun, just waiting to evaporate and be collected and have this closure to life.
(Really enjoyed this reaction looked up the song cause I'm making a cover of it right now and you popped up and I was like ¨oh cool let me see if this could kinda give me closure on the whole idea of this song¨ and thnk you! this had made me just have z deeper understanding and love for this song and Nf :)

That's what's so anazing in some of Nate's tracks he purposely doesn't clarify. There's many theories , some say God some say his self love some say his inner child or innocence. But it's left to me different things deoending on what the listener is going through. Fun fact tho Mate said this track was the one he was most worried bout puttung out cuz it's all singing and wasn't sure if his fans would be ok with it. But in the end Nate trusts us to support his experimenting however he wants. This is his art. Btw he posted some wisdom from his writing today on Twitter. He hasn't deleted it yet so check it out!

Going off of "Let You Down", "Grab my hand I'm drowning", brings back the imagery of him apologizing to his younger self. I agree. I think he is speaking to his soul/older self that he envisions rescuing him from his current mental state in the version of the only hope he has.

I have always thought he's been talking to his emotions/insecurites but I really love your future NF theory too. The grab my hand I'm drowning connection to Let You Down is great and it makes sense that NF knows he can only help himself but he is just not quite there yet. I think he also may have meant that he knows that he is loved by others and his future self but he and his emotions in his current state doesn't let himself feel love

One of my favorite ИF tracks I really dig when he sings.
"Let you down" is where his older self is watching him drown.
"Paralyzed" he raps hands in my pocket waves keep crashing I just watch them feeling under water but I'm on top of it I'm in a box but I'm the one that locked me in running out of oxygen. Something along those lines sorry it not word for word long day and I'm drawing blanks.

I know I’m late to the replies but I feel like he could be talking to happiness in this song. Or a part of it. “Why haven’t you found me yet” he could be saying he knows what happiness looks like but happiness hasn’t found him. He always feels depressed. “I hold you so proudly” we look at happiness and we all want it because it makes life enjoyable. “I wish you’d just love me back” he could be saying he wishes he was happy.
I think he’s talking to the same version of himself that he was referring to in I Miss The Days. It’s like he made a promise to himself that he was going on this search to find his way back to being happy through music and therapy, and something inside of him feels betrayed that these promises were made and his soul was laid bare to be laughed at and criticized, all for nothing because it didn’t work.

This song. Oh my soul, this song, smh. I have to say this song hit me some kind of way because it basically took me back to a mental state in childhood during my own abandonment experience. My mom came back later but it was never the same and I was never allowed to express the feeling in this song. The “lied and promised me my freedom” felt like it could be because even after you grow up, the trauma follows you and keeps you in a cage of your own making. You build it to keep yourself safe because you can’t trust even the people you should trust the most in life.
My two cents... that’s how I identify with NF anyway...

My own personal theory for this is that he's talking to his music.
Music was supposed to save him, bring him freedom (of expression), help him through all his traumas, and he holds it proudly...but still, it doesn't match exactly, y'know?

The instrumentation of this song, along with Nate's vocals, is among the most beautiful things I've heard.....Ever..... Trauma is my own personal favorite song of Nate's. There are so many different ways I can hear the words, and it all depends on what emotions I'm feeling at that moment in time. Sometimes I just put that one song on Repeat and let the music and lyrics wash over me over and over again. Stunningly beautiful, imho....

My favorite NF song. It's always relevant to me, no matter what problems/situations/emotions, etc., I'm going through at that moment. This is also one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard in a very long time.
There are a lot of references from previous songs in Trauma. For the most part, I think you've hit all the major points in this song. I'm like you, Panos.....I can't wait for his next single/album to drop! And I think his next album will be called Lost, too. He points to that so clearly in Paid My Dues, which is the LAST song he dropped. Nate may be waiting 'til it's all "Quiet" on the socials before he drops it, though. Just like he said he'd do in Leave Me Alone.....that'd be just like him!!💖💛✝

You should start back with his moments album. It wasn’t his best stuff. I like his lyrics in that album.. but you can really see the glow up through his music. I loved it then, and I think his music is amazing now.. but somehow it just keeps getting better and better!
