  • With a green area of 1,584,000m², it is one of the largest cultural circuits in the world, with museums and auditoriums by Oscar Niemeyer, heritage listed by the Instituto Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional. Inaugurated on August 21, 1954, during the celebrations of the IV Centenary of São Paulo, the Park project was conceived by the architects Oscar Niemeyer, Ulhôa Cavalcanti, Zenon Lotufo, Eduardo Kneese de Mello, Ícaro de Castro Mello, in addition to the landscaper Augusto Teixeira. Mendes. At the time of colonization, Ibirapuera Park was a swampy area that housed an indigenous village. The name comes from the Tupi-Guarani Ypy-ra-ouêra, which means rotten wood, due to the characteristics of the region at the time. The idea of creating the park appears in the beginning in the 1920s, with the mayor of the city of São Paulo José Pires do Rio, who proposed the transformation of the place into a park inspired by the Bois de Boulogne, in Paris (France), the Hyde Park in London (England) and Central Park in New York (United States). In 1927, Manuel Lopes de Oliveira, “Manequinho Lopes”, a plant lover, started planting hundreds of Australian eucalyptus trees in order to drain the land and eliminate excess moisture. After several proposals and reformulations, it is the project by Oscar Niemeyer and his team that remains to this day in Ibirapuera Park. With an area of 1,584,000 m², the park, as a whole, is listed by the Municipal Council for the Preservation of Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the City of São Paulo (CONPRESP) and by the Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (CONDEPHAAT). Throughout its history, the Park has consolidated itself as a space for leisure and culture, attracting thousands of people every day, whether for a visit to museums and exhibitions or for leisure or sports activities, such as running, walking, meditating. , cycling, skating or simply for sunbathing or contemplation. There are incredible 314 species of animals that share space with thousands of users; its fauna includes 44 butterflies, 10 fish, nine reptiles (tortoises, water tigers and snakes), an amphibian, mammals (including bats and black-eared skunks) and around 200 species of birds. Among these, the following stand out: thrushes, joão-de-arro, earth canary and goldfinch, flocks of parrots, maracanãs and parakeets. It is possible to observe several species of hummingbirds, woodpeckers, wild pigeons and flycatchers, as well as migratory birds, some arriving in spring and others in winter. A great attraction are the water birds, such as the elegant herons, socks and the graceful teals and grebes. With more than 18 million visitors a year, Ibira is the most beautiful green postcard in the city of São Paulo.
